Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ok...one more question 🙂
Someone earlier said that the last 20 minute interview is a closed file. Are the questions going to be broad like "tell us a little about yourself"? How will they know what questions to ask if they don't have your application!?!

They were general. The vibe I got is that they wanted to get to know YOU and not grill you based off of things on your app. It was very nice and relaxed! 🙂

They asked me what I did for fun/to relieve stress. I said I loved hiking, and told them about last summer's trip to the Grand Canyon and next summer's trip to Yellowstone. Completely off-topic of anything medicine-related, but I feel that they got a good view of who I am.

EDIT: And I threw in stuff that I wanted to make sure they knew about me, like I had a master's degree (since I knew they only had my undergrad info in front of them), my group project, and my hospice volunteering.

Sounds like it was a pretty relaxed interview!

It really was! No need to be nervous! I actually really liked this format, because we got to meet 8 faculty members/deans/admin people while we interviewed, instead of just a couple like at more traditional interviews.

nice you are already a resident while applying for med school. impressive.

I got my BS in prosthetics and orthotics. Worked as a resident in clinic and hospital. A member of the rehabilitation team but I want to be the doctor running the show. We are kind of on the same level as a PT but get paid a little more with a lot less paperwork ha

From these activities alone, which I assume you still do, you are doing 37 hours of volunteering per week, and not including the ER volunteering you have yet to start. This is a ton of volunteer work! Wow I am impressed, we need more people like you in the world!

What was the address that you guys mailed your letters to? This is the first time that I've ever had an issue with my letters being received.

Marian College of Osteopathic Medicine
Office of Admissions
3200 Cold Spring Road
Indianapolis, IN 46222

🙂

Note: It took a while for mine to get uploaded (I'm not sure if all mail-in people had this problem. I had to confirm they had them via email before they were uploaded on the portal.) So if you send them in and they don't get uploaded within a couple weeks I'd say to contact them.

The Kelly Early told me that they are paperless and will not receive LOR via mail.

when does the admission committee look at applications? how long from completion of secondary app do invites turn around

That's weird. Maybe it's changed since I turned things in. I received my secondary on the first day they went out back in July and turned everything in the next day. Maybe I turned things in too early for them to make that a requirement 🙄 who knows!

When I had my 20 min slot, my interviewer introduced himself, and then said 'I see you studied at Xxx University with ______ major. Tell me how you arrived at medicine and what you would like to accomplish'

I literally started from square one about my earliest experiences, thru childhood and then high school. Moved thru college, volunteer work, being an EMT, and shadowing.

That question was perfect for me because it gave me a blank slate with which to work from. The ability to tell my own story from the beginning made it really easy to explain what I hoped to do with a career in medicine, while giving the examples of the challenges and obstacles that I had faced along the way.

I'm sure each interviewer had their own style, but after I finished explaining my story my interviewer gave me an opportunity to ask questions of him. (Hint- ALWAYS have a question! Even if its something simple!) All in all, I felt like the 20 minutes flew by as we shared experiences and possibilities for the future as an osteopathic physician. It honestly felt like I was just having a conversation with a new friend, and giving them the 'nutshell' story of who I am and what I want to be.

You lucked out! I had no idea they were paperless either. Where is this information even available aside from directly emailing them? I wish I had known before I had everything mailed in. :smack:

I guess I did 😳 I hate doing my letters online because it sends it ALL of my letters (which is like 9) and it's super annoying to me lol. I honestly used the address on their bottom of their website and added "office of admissions" to it lol

That's weird because I specifically asked if it was ok to mail in letters & they said yes. I did have to email to verify that they were received before my portal changed, though.

I'm also having the same issue: sent in letters by mail, but recently checked in on them and the school said they only do paperless, so now I have to spend $ to send them electronically...and wasted money paying for the regular mail 🙁

Ugh, I totally feel you! On the OMC information book, they specifically wrote:

"Send Letters of Recommendation by:
Virtual Evals: Yes
Interfolio: Yes
Paper: Yes"

Looks like they've changed their mind mid-cycle. #newschoolproblems

STRESS!!! I wonder what happened to the letters sent by mail...garbage? Either way, this delayed my app from being complete by another 2 weeks now 🙁

Did you not have the Deans interview you for the 20 min slot? It was just one person interviewing you? Someone earlier said they had the 2 deans interview them for the 20 minutes...

I had 2 deans, but I do not know if they rotate who does the 20 min slot or not.

I just had one person do my interview. It was one of the professors (hint he's on the Facebook page for those accepted) and I could not have had a better person to mesh with. Then again I was in the 3rd week of interviews, and that Friday was the day of the 75th Anniversary Gala with everyone dressed up (so maybe the dean's were unavailable)

Then it shall be a surprise! thanks for answering my questions guys...you have been very helpful!

How long did you guys wait after getting the confirmed email to hear about interviews? I know they've been pretty bogged down, so I was curious to see what the timetables are like now. Thanks!

12 days it took for me 10/14 complete 10/26 ii

Road trip tonight to Indy! So excited to see what this school has in store for the interview. Safe travels to everyone else this weekend.

Complete 10-2
Ii 10-5
I think I got lucky submitting on a good day 🙂

Complete 10/9 once mcat scores came out. Probably released to the school on 10/16-17.

ii on 10/22

Also though, you have to consider when AACOMAS releases the applications to the schools. I believe it's every Tues. or Wed.

Mine was 8/27 complete and 9/7 i got my II. So about a week and a half. It seems like people wait anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks. Pretty quick in general if you ask me!

Yay DrMeows!!!!! I am super happy for you! You deserve it! I'm still rooting for you and CCOM. 👍

A quick word regarding letter of recommendations.

As the first paperless application process in osteopathic medicine, we prefer to receive recommendations via Interfolio or VirtualEval; however, we accept paper ones, too. Letters are uploaded into our database twice a week then are reviewed for completeness. So, the entire electronic process can take 2-3 weeks. For paper, easily add another 2 weeks (or more) to the timeline, depending on the volume that we receive. Thanks for all the questions and sharing of information.

Regards,

I will be putting my deposit down at Marian and I'd love to go here! I'll still have to see how the rest of this application cycle goes for me before I can make definite decisions, though!
