Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys! Quick Question: Can you bring like a small notebook to jot down notes before walk into the interview room for each MMI station, or is that not allowed?🙂

I'm sure you CAN, but to be honest it would probably be a waste. When you're in there you aren't going to have the time to jot down notes. I say focus on what you're saying and what you will be saying in the next station, because the notes won't really matter.

Sorry about the waitlist, but don't lose hope! 1st quartile is a very good chance of getting taken off! 🙂

Thank you for your kind words! The anxiety is taking a toll lol

Do you remember at what time of the month you were taken off the list? Did they call on Thurs or Friday night?

Thanks!

Do we stay on the waitlist until accepted/the cycle ends? Or can we get rejected from the waitlist prior to the end of the cycle?

It was Thursday November 1st around 4:15 pm ET  Yep....I'm pretty psychotic to remember that hahaha. But when you get the call that changes your life you're never going to forget it!

They said earlier in this thread that this Thursday is the next time they're going to look at the list so hopefully you only have a few more days of anxiety 😀 👍

I think you CAN get dropped off the waitlist (someone correct me if I'm wrong) because as they look over the waitlist I believe you can either be moved up or moved down. And I would assume if you are in the bottom quartile then you can essentially be dropped off. But since you're in the first quartile I wouldn't really worry about that if I were you.

Right again drmeows you can be moved up or even down from the waitlist

Just an observation.... no one has really posted about receiving an interview invite on here in awhile...

Hoping for an acceptance today since they're reviewing the waitlist!👍

I am not sure if you would have enough time. Also we are not allowed to share the MMI scenarios with anyone.

I don't recall them mentioning anything about keeping the MMI scenarios a secret...? 😕 They didnt say this at my interview, at least. Also, most schools that do MMI switch what the questions are every interview anyways. So its not like you can prepare for a specific question ahead of time. But it is nice to know the types of scenarios they give you so you're not so anxious ahead of time.

Good Luck to those hoping to hear back today! 👍 :luck:

Are we supposed to receive a confirmation email indicating that we selected to put on the waitlist on the response form in the portal? I remember getting a confirmation email about the interview schedule but didn't receive one after filling out the response form for the waitlist. Just wanted to make sure this is correct. Thanks!

Was no one pulled off the waitlist yesterday? I feel like acceptances have been few and far between lately...

Or it's possible that the people pulled off just aren't on SDN?? Maybe..

Doesn't look like anyone has joined the Facebook group either. Is it possible they are interviewing fewer students?

No idea. I also noticed no one new joined (hardly anyone has joined within the last few weeks even). I wonder what's going on! It seemed like there was a lot of joiners up until then! 😕

they are getting more and more competive, inviting less people and giving out less acceptances

Hi does anyone know if MUCOM will have an affiliation with a hospital system (St. Vincent or Community Health for example) that will be getting an orthopedic residency? I know those are the two main hospital systems associated with MUCOM that have residency programs, but when I looked on their websites neither one of them have an orthopedic surgery residency. I really want to do all of my training after MUCOM in Indiana, but have a strong interest in orthopedic surgery and am hoping that residency is going to be added to one of those two hospital systems.

Join the club. 😀 A few people have expressed a similar interest in ortho and have also inquired about residencies. A few pages ago in this thread MU-COM was kind enough to respond and address some current/planned/potential residencies and fellowships with their affiliated hospital systems (that you mentioned). Ortho was not among the specialties they listed...however you should go back and read what MU-COM wrote because it addressed some good points that are relavent to incoming medical students and the residency situation.

Edit: I'm still crossing my fingers that it could happen though. 😉

For the secondaries, did everyone write to the max?

I did! But if you don't have anything more relevant to say, I would say don't so you don't end up going in circles 🙂 just write what you need and what you want the ADCOM to know 🙂

Thanks I will look! Crossing fingers they add an Ortho residency option around Indy too!

Just got home from my interview! I thought everything was great! The MMI was actually pretty fun 🙂 all the interviewers were so nice 🙂👍

Got an II, confirmed for Feb 1st. Eek. To those that have already interviewed, what hotels did you guys pick (preferably near the school), since I'll be flying in I have no idea where to stay. Thanks!

I stayed at the Wingate by Wyndham Indianapolis Northwest. I called each hotel and it was the cheapest one when you told them you were with Marian University so you could get their rate. The room was nice and they had a hot breakfast in the morning. Less than a 10 minute drive for me in the morning too. I would recommend it. Good luck at interview!

Oh ok thanks! Did you rent a car or use cabs?

I actually had my own car there so I don't have advice on that one. I know some of the people in my group had a taxi and some had a rental car. I do not know which one would be cheaper though...sorry!

If you're staying downtown and the hotel has a shuttle service to/from the airport i'd recommend using a cab to get to Marian but if not, a rental car would be cheaper. I interviewed yesterday and since there were no available hotels downtown i rented a car and stayed near the airport.. I am under 25 and had to pay the underage fee but it was still cheaper than taking cabs.

Yeah I'm looking into some hotels, which one did you stay at?

I got waitlisted too...1st quartile. :scared:😱😕

Did you receive a confirmation email once you filled out the response form in the portal indication you wanted to be placed on the waitlist?

Did Marian say during the interview day how many people they will be accepting out of the people they interview?

Also, did they mention anything about in state students vs out of state students?

At my interview they didn't reveal the numbers of how many they will accept after the interview but they "have a number in mind." Also, as far as IS vs OOS, according to the facebook group it seems like there's a good representation of both. There's actually a lot of OOS-ers (myself included) and that's not just midwest. I'd say being OOS doesn't totally count people out at all!

Does anyone know if the 1/18 and 1/19 interviews will be hearing decisions this week?

Did they not tell you while you were there? 🙁

Well I remember Dr. Evans saying "decisions are made on Thursdays" but I don't really remember him saying anything about when ours would be made😕 They might have, and I just can't re-call...

It seems like the trend is that decisions are made the week after your interview (on Thursday). And if they don't get through all of the applications then yours will be revealed the following week (Thursday). At least that's how it's been the past several months.. it may be a little off because of the holidays?
Good luck! I hope you get a phone call! 👍

Dr. Evans said that the Admissions Committee is meeting Thursday to discuss last weekend's interviewees and we should hear back by Tuesday, 1/29
