Does anybody know when the next deposit deadline is for people accepted recently? Of course applicants with multiple acceptances will need to narrow down where to submit their deposits.

I thought MU-COM followed AACOMAS traffic guidelines. Here they are from the CIB:

-Those accepted prior to November 15 will have until December 14.
-Those accepted between November 15 and January 14 will have 30 days.
-Those accepted between January 15 and May 14 will have 14 days.
-Those accepted after May 15 may be asked for an immediate deposit.


**You can always call MU-COM to double check when your deadline is.

Just got my first interview!!!😀

im thinking about signing up for the March 16th date, anyone else gonna be there with me? Does anyone who has already interviewed have any ideas of things to do in Indianapolis when we're not interviewing?

I originally applied to MU mostly because (dont hate me) they had a low MCAT requirement. But after reading this thread and researching the school more I'm actually really excited to visit for the interview and it's moving up to be one of my top choices now!

Currently, Marian is the only school I have been accepted to but I have interviewed at 5 schools so I'll still give you an opinion here. Marian is at the top of my list even if I get pulled off waitlists for other schools for many reasons (no particular order):

1. Location and Community. I'm from the Midwest and really don't want have to go all that far if I don't have to. Not to mention its located in a major city which is something that appeals to me. Since it's only the 2nd med school in the state, the community and its hospitals are really excited for students to be there. I'm amazed at how much money has been donated to build the school, which will ultimately lead to a great and up to date, new facility. Meaning it will be better in facilities versus, any other schools: new anatomy lab, new OMM lab, new touch screens to get into study rooms, etc. I've seen really crappy anatomy labs, so I'm excited to see a built up one.

2. Administration. Hands down this staff is the friendliest I have encountered. They clearly are trying to make a great first class. And I felt more like I was interviewing them than they were interviewing me. They keep you informed on the school, are always available to talk to, and seem to answer any questions students have. (They're even answering admissions questions on SDN! that's pretty freaking awesome) Faculty are also a part of the Facebook group - they comment on posts, post pictures of the new building as it improves, and post updates themselves. I just know that when going to Marian we will continue to be treated like we matter. To branch off that, much of the faculty comes from other DO schools. So they have experience teaching DO students and everyone isn't just running around like chickens with their heads cut off 😉

3. Curriculum. I like systems more than basic science, personally. It makes more sense in terms of treating patients later on and practicing for boards. Although, right now I'm still super interested to see what 2nd semester 2nd year looks like to see how much time is set aside for board prep and individual review. I think that's important and hope they share that with us soon. To go off of this, though, the dean comes from PCOM-GA (has experience opening a new school) and I believe the curriculum is based off of that. So the curriculum is proven to work. That's something that put my mind at ease a little bit.

That being said, if you're someone that's already accepted, hopefully you have time to let the accepted student day next month help affect your decision. I'm excited to see the building and hear about things they have planned for the school. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions 🙂 the things I listed above are all I could come up with from the top of my head at the moment!

Where did you see a specific MCAT requirement? I've only ever seen some loose guidelines and anticipated averages on the website...but that's it really.

While in the general ballpark, the number of available seats--which is constantly in flux--is not entirely accurate. Finally, while admission is definitely more competitive later in the year (i.e., now), there will be seats available as long as we are interviewing (through April).

Primary application deadline is March 1st.
Supplemental application deadline is April 1st.

The number 15 came straight from the dean's mouth. That doesn't mean that the rest paid their deposits and he didn't say how many have paid deposits, but I promise he said 15.

You're welcome. But note: As this class will be the inaugural class, no one who is on the SDN forums knows what MU-COMs MCAT averages is/will be. It's only speculation at this point. People on SDN recommend it to people with lower stats on SDN solely because it is a new school...but since you have read through this thread you must have seen that people with good stats have been rejected as well. Anyways, good luck!

Thanks! Ya I've definitely read some peoples posts about how they had good stats but got wait listed, i was using their "stats" as a tie breaker to decide if i wanted to initially apply there. Guess that's one of the challenges of applying to a brand new school.

my friend who is in med school right now said i should be somewhat worried about the fact that MU is only partially accredited at this point and won't be fully accredited until 2017. for anyone who has had an interview, did they mention anything about this? should we be worried at all?

No, you shouldn't be worried about that. No school that has ever been provisionally accredited has ever failed. Even if they were to fail, COCA has mandated that every new school put money away in an escrow account that will pay for all the students to be placed in other DO programs across the country. So essentially, even if it were to fail you would be placed in another school. The only thing to worry about with new schools are the growing pains that come with starting a new school, the extra hours in class that most new schools seem to require, and the quality of the rotation sites. Marian seems to be a solid choice though, considering that it is a new school.

Like FuturDO22 said, this is nothing to worry about. All new schools have provisional accreditation. From what I understand no school can have full accreditation until their first class graduates. So all schools go through this in the beginning. But I understand your worries 🙂

From what I've seen and heard Marian is going to be quite the opposite of this. They are trying to minimize hours in the classroom so you can do group studying or independent study. Looking at their day-to-day schedule, it looks like you're in class around 4-5 hours a day (this varies depending on the day). I love this about MUCOM 👍

I agree with what FutureDoc said. Also, MUCOM is being run by a dean who has started a new school before so that should help with the transition. MUCOM also has hired faculty from all over the nation and some of the top DO programs. They must see the promise in MUCOM. The support from the local hospitals is very good as well, which I think will help with great rotation sites.

Just remember...even your friend's school was provisionally accredited at some point.

It's my understanding that no DO school has ever lost its accreditation once its reached the provisional accreditation. That's what both the new schools I interviewed at were saying. I too had some trepidation about starting at a new school with the possibility of having to finish at another school if something went wrong. So dont worry. All the new schools will be accredited after that first class!

I think a concern could be a lack of an alumni base in residency programs and name recognition. For some specialties, program directors may prefer people from established schools where their other residents come from when considering all applicants for the residency.

I also think that is a cool thing about being part of the inaugural class. We will have the chance to set the tone for MUCOM in the minds' of residency directors.

I really hope so too. It is such a benefit to be able to have all of your info (typed notes and written notes) in the same place. Although it seems nice that some schools' students get iPads with all the lecture notes on it, I would not enjoy that as much. Wonderfully flashy, but not quite as effective for studying...for me at least.

I don't see why we would need to travel when the community and St. Vincent networks are so large in Indianapolis. They are statewide, but there are plenty of hospitals in Indy to go to.

There is no Community/IU merger. Wishard and Community are partnering but not merging.

I don't think they're releasing approximate numbers for any part about the interview to rejection/waitlist/acceptance process. However, I would ASSUME they waitlist quite a few due to the fact it's a new school in order to make sure they fill the class.
