Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I may have just missed it if these were covered over the weekend, but I don't recall hearing anything about them and didn't think about them until now:

-Is the date set for the white coat ceremony yet? I've heard August 9th and August 11th thrown around, but nothing concrete to my knowledge.

-Were the plans for international medical mission opportunities through the school discussed further?

From the email we got on March 5, MU-COM Update, White coat ceremony was TBA either the 9th or 11th. I don't know if it was decided on this weekend. The global health opportunities in the email were as follows:

Global Health Opportunities

No study abroad or mission trips are planned currently, but the University does have study abroad and Catholic Charities has mission trips, as well as other programs that sponsor medical missions from Indianapolis.

For the future, YES, MU-COM plans to have global health opportunities available. Dr. Michael Kuchera, Chair of OMM, has several close relationships in Europe. In addition, OM people travel a lot in Europe especially central Europe. Furthermore, MU-COM may have opportunities in South America and Mexico as well. Other possible countries that we are interested in include Thailand, Vietnam and China as well as New Zealand and Australia. Finally, MU-COM will likely investigate establishing a relationship with a medical school in South America, using medical school contacts, too.

From what you can see, the answer is YES! Currently, we are focusing on doing the basics very well right now. In the near future, we will devote more time to other aspects that will distinguish your education. It is also important to remember that there are several opportunities to work with the underserved right here in the USA through Vista and AmeriCorps.

Ah yes. Thanks! I did read that about the medical missions when it came out...guess it just slipped my mind. They covered so much info this weekend and were so thorough, I figured I may have missed it if they covered it in more depth.

To echo everyone else, WOW! Had an amazing time this weekend. If its possible, I'm even more excited to start at MUCOM! I love that they're giving us mini iPads!!! Everyone seemed so nice and enthusiastic! Can't wait until fall!

Our class is so awesome. Lol

This weekend was really informative. I'm really excited for the fall! I agree our class is awesome, I must have missed BuddyTheElf so you'll have to bring some candy canes to orientation!

Awesome weekend, awesome class, awesome school, awesome city, awesome community, awesome hospitals.

And iPad mini's...awesome 😉

All in all, a very enticing package at MU-COM

Since it's a Sunday, do you know if a rough time has been decided yet? (morning vs. afternoon?)
Also, there's been a lot of talk about dress code and attendance policy. At my interview we were told that there was no dress code and no attendance policy at that time.. but one of the professors hinted that this is not the case. Do you know if it will stay this way or if there is some sort of policy in the work? I know many students keep asking each other about this.
Thanks for being so helpful MU COM!!!! 👍 😍

Appreciate this! Now my mom and mother-in-law can stop bugging me about it...😀

In the same vein as the white coat ceremony, has there been an announcement about orientation days?

Good question...I'm not sure that I've seen that info anywhere yet.

But, since I like to guess things 😉 :

Class starts on the 12th here, the white coat on the 11th...so I'd guess the 9th and 10th (or maybe just the 10th).

I thought I had read somewhere that it was the 7-9... Not sure where I saw that though.. Maybe MU COM can chime in on this, too!

+1 I'd love for them to chime in on this. However, I REALLY want them to chime in on the dress code and attendance policy question that was posted above first. I don't want that to be looked over!

Dress code:
Professional attire with white coats for hospital visits and clinical experiences; you are entering a profession. For lecture and traditional classroom experiences, there is not a dress code per se. Dress appropriately; use good, professional judgment.

Attendance policy:
One of the core osteopathic competencies is professionalism. Even though a college-wide attendance policy may not exist, individual faculty members could evaluate you accordingly. In other words, while lectures are recorded for your learning benefit, they are not recorded so you can skip class. Again you are a professional. (Would you want to see a doctor who did not attend class!?!)

In closing, the theme of professionalism cannot be overstated.

Hope this helps,
MU-COM Admissions

Thank you so much for answering! This is completely understandable and the answer I was hoping for. It's just nice to have the administration put the professionalism more or less in the hands of the students (which in my opinion is the way it should be!).

I love this school. :biglove:

Can any of the accepted students let me know what the daily schedule looks like? For example, lectures 8-12, lab 2-5 or something like that. Obviously there will be variation, I'm just wondering what the general schedule looks like for 1st and 2nd year students right now.

For first year, it really depends on the week. For the most part, Monday-Friday we have class all morning from 8-11:30 or 12 (then we have a lunch break). Most weeks it looks like we have Wednesday and Friday afternoons off, but things switch up sometimes when we have exam weeks. Class time in the afternoons will normally go till 4. First year first semester, the mornings are taken up by anatomy or the foundations course (we have a foundations course to reveiw basic biomed sciences before systems start) and the afternoons are taken up by ICM and OMM. After foundations is over, whatever system we are working on replaces the morning schedule. Anatomy ends after the first semester and then the mornings are all systems for the semesters after that.

For second year, we only have the first semester in reality. They gave us a schedule for second semester but I know it's still in the works since board preparation is still being determined (a lot of the time blocks have TBD on them). We are told that "student input" will be taken into consideration for this, but I don't know when this input is going to happen (whether it be this year or maybe next year when the first class has already started). During the first semester it looks like class time really lightens up in the afternoon and is mostly mornings. Also, as evident by the schedule we were given and told to us at the accepted students program this last weekend, they try to make most exams on Mondays. This is based off of the thought that students won't have to skip classes to study for mid or end of the week exams.

Hope that helps 👍

I was a little nervous for the interview today (because it was my first one ever) but i think i really like the MMI style! I was pretty excited to go to this school after reading things on SDN, but after the info session and campus tour today im even more excited. in case anyones wondering the COM/ Nursing building is coming along nicely, on the tour they said they are finishing up the details on the inside and that then they are beginning the grassy area around it. Dr. Evans said they were two weeks ahead of schedule. I tried attaching a pic of the building i took today if anyone wants to see the progress of the building.

Glad u liked it! 🙂 good luck this week!

I realize I'm jumping the gun here but:
Does anyone know anything about what MU-COM app process is going to be like for the 2013/2014 cycle? As in when interviews are going to start and if there are going to be more seats for this class? I believe interviews started in oct for this cycle and I was kinda hoping that they might start sooner next cycle.

Waitlisted, 2nd Quartile  ...

anyone know more about the quartiles? i know that the first is most competative, etc. but not sure about the odds of moving up to the accepted list (i know that they dont release that information, but was anyone else accepted from the 2nd quartile and how long did it take for you to fing out?)

Wait-listed 3rd quartile. I must have done very poorly at the interview.

Do you think they will provide a candidate some feedback on how they can improve for the following cycle?

I knew I was a long shot but I had held out some hope for a miracle. :help:

Hey, sorry to hear that you didn't get the news you necessarily wanted.

I doubt that they will provide feedback without an inquiry by you.

I'm willing to bet that if you contacted them, they'd be happy to discuss improvements that can be made to increase your chances. Most schools will do this.

I know this is a busy time for them. When do you think would be an appropriate time to contact them?

Honestly I'd contact them any time during their open office hours. I don't see why it would be inappropriate for you to contact them regarding your application/status... at all. That's what they are there for.

It is a busy time, but the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

As long as you aren't going overboard with contact, you can call or email them whenever you'd like.

*edit: the old man beat me to it 😉

Got the epic phone call today! Accepted to Marian, and can't wait to meet you all!

YAY! God I feel like I haven't seen an accepted post on here in a while. I love that someone did! Congrats!!! 🙂 🙂

Is there a final deposit due for those who have been accepted so far other than the first deposit?

Are most accepted people finalized about this school, or still debating between another school?

There's a 2000 dollar deposit due May 1st. I'm sure you'll see a lot of waitlist movement then!

How much was the first deposit and when was that due?
You gotta admit they are nice about the deposits. So many other schools make you pay obscene amounts (3k) right when you are accepted and make you commit. Perhaps that's why there hasn't been too much movement on the waitlist. Most people will make their final decision in early May since they have the time to decide.

3K in general makes me cringe lol, no matter when it is, but I get what you're saying. The first deposit was 1K (so 3K total between the 2 deposits) and MU goes by AACOMAS deadlines so people have 2 weeks for their 1K deposit if accepted around this time.

And I totally agree that there are people deciding. That's why some spots should open up early May 🙂

Most schools have an initial deposit amount of $1000-$2000, and most also follow the AACOMAS traffic guidelines. I'm amazed by the few $3000 first deposit schools. Its crazy, but definitely not the norm.

I was hoping the second deposit for Marian was due in April (I thought Dr. Evans said that), but May 1st isn't that far away I guess.

FOR THOSE STILL APPLYING TO MU-COM...

The following are important updates in regard to the close of the 2013 application cycle for MU-COM:

  • The supplemental application deadline is 5 PM on Monday, April 1.
  • Letters of recommendation and related application materials will be accepted until 5 PM on Friday, April 5.
  • Materials received after this date will not be processed. There will be no exceptions to this timeline.
  • Processing of completed applications will continue after April 5, 2013, until a final decision is rendered.
Please resist the overwhelming urge to call our office immediately after submitting materials to us. Given the volume of applications received, processing can take 2—3 days (or longer). Phone calls delay processing for everyone. Remember, you can check the status of your application 24 hours a day in the portal. You will receive an email confirmation of your status once processing is complete. Accordingly, if you have questions or concerns, please contact us at [email protected].

We appreciate your interest in MU-COM.

Sincerely,
MU-COM Admissions

P.S. When submitting application materials to us, please do so electronically. Letters of recommendation may be submitted by Interfolio or VirtualEvals; your AACOMAS ID must be specified in your upload. Alternatively, materials may be submitted by email directly to Kelly Early at [email protected]; include the applicant's full name and AACOMAS ID. (NOTE: Letters of recommendation must be submitted by the recommender, not the applicant.)

not sure if this has been posted in any of the previous 39 pages but anyone have any idea about the 3rd and 4th year calendar for rotations?

There is a "search this thread" option that is really helpful. Here is the info cut and pasted from Dr. Meows post 2 pages previous. Hope this is helpful!

"Signed Hospitals: Community Johnson County in Franklin; Community East, West-Westview, North, and South in Indy; Deaconess in Evansville; Franciscan St. Francis in Indy; Good Samaritan in Vincennes; Hancock Regional in Greenfield; Health Center Madison County Community in Anderson; Hendricks Regional in Danville; Henry County in New Castle; Lutheran in Ft. Wayne; Margaret Mary in Batesville; Parkview in Ft. Wayne; Reid and Rush hospitals in Richmond; Scheck Medical Center in Seymour; St. Vincent in Indy; Union in Terre Haute; and Witham in Lebanon.

Pending Hospitals: Bloomington in Bloomington; Columbus Regional in Columbus; Floyd Memorial in New Albany; Howard Community in Kokomo; Johnson Memorial in Franklin; Methodist in Indianapolis; Monroe in Bloomington; Owensboro Medical Center in Kentucky; Riverview in Novblesville; St. Elizabeth in Lafeyette; St. Joseph in Mishawaka; St. Mary's in Evansville; and Terre Haute in Terre Haute."

not the locations, the curriculum and weeks spent in FP, IM, OBGYN, electives etc

How will these be allocated to students? Is there some sort of lottery system for students?

My biggest concern is that a lot of these hospitals aren't academic and haven't had too many students rotate through. How can one be sure that they will get a good clinical education in the first class?

Yeaaaa, I don't think that picture of the 3rd and 4th year calendar worked. I may revisit how to post the info better on my next study break lol

No rush, just doing some research.
I am surprised the school hasn't posted that information on their website, but reading back it looks like a lot of work is being done on the site so I'm hopeful it will be updated when application season begins

not the locations, the curriculum and weeks spent in FP, IM, OBGYN, electives etc

Ok this is REALLY off topic but I know Kenobi visits these here parts often and I have to share this with him:

Can anyone tell me what my chances are at Marian?

Illinois resident

3.7 cGPA, 3.5-3.6 sGPA
25 MCAT (9PS 7VR 9BS)

Lots of volunteering, EMT, shadowing, tennis coach, some clubs, research, DO letter

applying early this coming cycle

I don't know if anyone can tell you at the moment since we don't know the stats of the first class, but I think you've got a great shot.

You have a solid GPA and decent MCAT and being from the Midwest will probably help a lot. Your clinical EMT experience will probably help too. As long as you apply early like you say you will, and basing off of my own stats, I think you have a pretty fair chance of scoring an interview. 🙂

I don't want to sound insensitive, but dude, you have to hold the record for "what are my chances" type posts. At this point it is what it is...so just go for it and see what happens. I know it's stressful, but there comes a point where you are just hearing people say the same things to you over and over. This level of neuroticism could potentially hurt you in the long run no matter what your stats/ECs are.
