New York COM (NYIT-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a 3.74 GPA and a 3.65 sGPA as of right now with a double major in biology and geology, minor in history. If I get an MCAT score of a 24, would I have a chance at NYCOM? I'm in state btw

Honestly no. Right now, anyone with an MCAT of 26 and below get waistlisted. They simply get TOO MANY applications, especially from MD applicants, and alot of MDers go to NYCOM if MD is no-go.

So even though your GPA is good, your MCAT will be up against thousands with 27+ whether this cycle, and moreso the next.

I'm talking about the 2014 - 2015 cycle.

I thought you were thinking about 2012 - 2013. Still very disappointing that the MCAT holds so much weight at this school

The problem is when you got applicants with 3.3+ and almost the same ECs...the MCAT is the test that equalizes everyone. I hate the test as much as you do. It's literally the ONLY thing holding me back...its insane.

Are you applying to NYCOM and M.D schools?

If we're getting a committee letter from our undergraduate institution, do we need to fill out the faculty specific fields? I have 3 science letters, and a few non science but since they're going to be in the committee letter do i have to include names there or just the advisor that's writing the committee letter?

so for the secondary app questions:

How did you become interested in osteopathic medicine?

How did you hear about NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine?

Is there a character or word limit? If not, how long were your responses?
Mine were no more than 2 sentences.

Wait so the payment processed email is the complete email? How do we check if our LOR's were received?

There was an email from PayPal confirming my payment. Then NYIT also sent an email saying my payment was received and that my application is now marked as complete.

No, I called them the other day--they said they have not even looked at any of our apps and won't for at least another 3 weeks. Yehoshua--the email you are talking about it actually just says that your SUPPLEMENTAL application is marked complete. They have not even downloaded any of the letters or anything yet lol.

So yea thats the update.

my app was released on 19th how long does it take to get 2ndary?

Just so everyone else sees this (because I didn't know it, either):

NYIT-COM does not send out invites to complete their secondary.

As soon as your primary is submitted and verified, you can fill out and submit a secondary on NYIT-COM's website.

Wtf wow. Thank you.

From their website:

"1. Does the College of Osteopathic Medicine use a supplemental application?
Yes, we use an online supplemental application that is for all applicants. It is important to complete the supplemental as soon as you have received an email from us acknowledging your AACOMAS application and directing you to the supplemental. For more specific questions and instructions for the supplemental application, visit the "How to Apply" tab on our website."

Curious...

That is some crap. I had no idea until I checked this thread!

I definitely didn't get an e-mail from them. I submitted their secondary on my own accord (after my primary was submitted), and it's currently marked as "complete." 😕

Me either. I check my spam folder fairly often.

What's this about 30 students failing the COMLEX step 1

From Onco

So after confirming with people I know over at NYCOM, this seems to be a unsubstantiated rumor. They do not release the board pass info. Administration never had a meeting, and the fail number is estimated to be around 10-15 students this year. This can also be confirmed by knowing the class number and subtracting the students currently listed on the rotation rosters, as NYCOM would not allow a student to begin M3 rotations after failing (which shows a 95% pass rate)

Hi guys,
I wanted to thank you because if not for this thread I would still be waiting for by NYCOM secondary. That would be even worse since it is my top school -_-

Im going over the secondary and have a potentially stupid question. For this question:
Indicate your extracurricular activities and the extent of your involvement (officer positions, etc.) while enrolled as a student,
they're asking about EC that I was involved in at my college correct? It seems like they cover all outside EC in the previous questions.

Supplemental Application

You should be receiving an email for supplemental application from NYITCOM per its website:

32 people failed last year
30 people have failed so far this year

send your app in.. What's the worst that can happen, they say no. nycom has accepted far far far lower mcat scores than that

Still waiting on the secondary invite from this school. Anyone else still waiting on it? This is definitely one of my top choices as well (despite the rumor 😛).

Oh goodness. Scroll up! You should see a few posts with bold red letters in large font....

first, they actually do release the board pass/fail info over and over again to the following class. I guess as a way to scare them into doing better - since the latest trend has been more people fail each year. There were 32 failures last year and 30 failures this year (so far - not everyone has taken boards yet) And even though your logic is correct in figuring out percentage pass rate, good luck with getting an accurate number of students since this is always skewed a bit to make their stats appear better

I will in the 2014 - 2015 cycle providing my GPA stays high and I don't get a <23 MCAT

Also is it true NYCOM is pass/fail
yes. top 10% of the class (at the very end of the system/cumulative grade) will receive honors for that system. The rest get pass (as long as you got an overall above a 69.5%)
