Oklahoma State University (OSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2016-2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well I am in state and of any of you OOS folks get an II I have a spare room!
That's awesome man thank you! Hopefully I'll get to take you up on that offer Haha. Is OSU not particularly friendly to OOSers?

Most students are from the region, but don't know an exact number/percentage of IS vs OOS. Just out of curiosity, can any current students here comment on the COMLEX1 data I found on their site? It seems to have dropped from 95% to only 77% in a matter of two years.
  • 2015 - 2016: 77.06%
  • 2014 - 2015: 89.19%
  • 2013 - 2014: 94.62%
  • 2012 - 2013: 91.76%

The percentage for OOS is less than 10 percent I believe. Where did you get those statistics?

Was there a curriculum change or something that would cause scores to drop drastically like that? 77% doesn't sound too good at all

Up to 15% of each class is open for OOS applicants. Those spots tend to be filled by applicants in the region, but I'm sure it varies from year to year.

Preliminary reports are that this year fared as well as last year. There are a variety of reasons for this but the morale of the story is that board scores and pass rates are student dependent, not school dependent. The school gives tons of board prep resources and almost 3 months of dedicated study period and the recent dip in statistics will make them add more resources for future student success. If you have more questions I can expound a little

This is a fact. The OOS students here are generally high stats and/or have strong ties to the state.

But one of the goals in correlating GPA and MCAT to pass rates is to allow Admissions to make decisions favoring those with the least risk of failing boards. Thus the high weight placed on candidate GPA and MCAT usually. To claim a recent significant drop in pass rate has NO dependence on school decisions sounds very crass. Am I missing something??

Thanks,

boards have dipped cause(based on talking to a lot of my upper-classman and experience at school):

1. Curriculum change that the school is still trying to figure out.
2. Goljan retired
3. Curriculum isn't "board centered" anyways.
4. motivation.

Number 4 combined with a little of number 1 are the most important factors in my opinion. As Dr. Death said, we have tons of time to study for boards as compared to other schools (some schools I was accepted at only gave 2 weeks), and its only going to get better. So realistically you have a better chance to do well on board here now than at other schools (the dedicated time has increase in the last 2 years). HOWEVER, a VERY LARGE proportion of our classes come in saying "All I want to do is be a primary care Doc in rural Oklahoma" Which is great because that is our school's mission, and not only OK but the USA needs good primary care docs and these students will fill that role and be great at it! OSU has more residency positions than it has students. Most of these residencies are primary care, meaning OSU's residencies are very protected. So, a large proportion of students here know all they have to do is pass everything with a minimum and they will most likely get to be a rural primary care doc in Ok. So, the motivation to "crush boards" is very low here compared to other school I was accepted at. This C's get degrees mentality, matched with a new curriculum that the school is still trying to figure out makes for a bad combination for a high class board passing rate. It also makes for a very friendly and non competitive environment, which is one of the things I love about this school. Also just shooting strait, if you are OOS and high stats it also presents a good opportunity to be the "big fish in a little pond" if you are into that kind of stuff because very few people really care about class rank or killing boards. Whereas if you go to KCU, RVU, or other high stat DO schools it is very competitive because most people there had a decent chance to get into MD schools however it didn't shake out in their favor and now they have a chip on their shoulder (this is the vibe that was confirmed to me through getting accepted and making friends at other DO schools).

However, if you want to crush boards you will(if you have the intelligence/work ethic). It does not matter if you go to Harvard, OSU, or a carribean school... BOARDS ARE ON YOU, not the school. I have talked to plenty of 3rd/4th years at our school who want to be (insert surgical/subspecialty here) and they crushed boards and made the connections to give them a good shot at it.

Also real talk, 90% of the class is in-state students. The high stats applicants are mostly at OU and so these students have lower GPA and MCAT. The 10% OOS students are dragging up the admissions averages, as @DNC127 said the OOS students are typically the bigger gunners and bigger fish in the pond as far as our class goes. Two years ago RVU had higher USMLE than Colorado. Does that mean RVU is a better school? Doubtful, more likely they just had a great class of students.

I don't know that I buy the whole student's motivation factor. It was at 91, 94, then went to 89 and 77. So by that thinking, more people were motivated the first two years than the last two years? The same people who were okay with just doing primary care in rural OK and didn't care too much about the test were able to get rates above a 90 before.

Every class is different and it's not on the school if you are unable to pass your boards. They give you every resource and it's up to you to utilize it.

What kind of prep do they have? I know some schools implement a review class while others include subscriptions to study sites.

There is a board review class that goes over all the systems in review. There is also a 2 week board prep course. I believe there is also a discount or subscription to study sites.

I said "motivation combined with new curriculum". The two factors do NOT go well together. Take my advice or leave it. But I am just calling it how I see it.

Patiently waiting!!! Really hope to interview here.

Based on last year you are still at least 2-3 weeks away from the first II

BRB trying to fugue out why I applied so early...

Had a friend who took his MCAT in January of 2016. Submitted app in March. Interviewed in May. Accepted in May.. He's in our class... should make it harder for you to figure out why you applied early 😉

Hey guys! Quick question for anyone that may be familiar with the system at OSU.
One parent has lived in OK for 10+ years, however, I went to HS and college in another state. I am planning to move to OK right after graduation (May 2017) and get a job/apartment. Does this mean that I would apply as an OOS but be able to matriculate (Fall 2018) with in-state tuition?

I honestly doubt it. I think you need some sort of residency before you apply. You would have to come here for work first, then apply.

I just know that this week we will see some II's going out. I cant wait to hear from this school. I have been able to watch them build the new building and it looks awesome.

I don't, I just have a good feeling. Plus I combed through all of the old threads for the last 4 years and it seems this is about the time.

Hey guys I need some help. If I get accepted to this school, is it possible to get instate tuition after 1 year residency in Oklahoma? I am a oos applicant.

Thanks in advance

He makes for a creepy doctor. With his long coat he looks more like a predator than a doctor cowboy.

I unfortunately will not be able to complete the secondary for this school. I am doing research in Canada, where the nearest DO is 5 and a half hours away, so I simply don't have access to a DO to write a LoR. Good luck to everyone!

That sucks! Having a D.o. letter is honestly retarted. These schools need to realize how difficult is to shadow a doctor and then get a LOR after that.

If you REALLY wanna come here, I would just call the school and explain your situation. All they can say is no... Worth a shot.

Yeah I was thinking about doing this. I just read on here that it is a pretty strict requirement. I'll keep everyone updated.

Still nothing from this school for me...

I think we'll see some action this next week. Last year they had interviews starting in late October, so I'm thinking this will be the week hopefully!
