Rowan University (RowanSOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe the interviews start at the end of the month. My interview day is Friday Aug 30. I received the call from admissions on August 5th.

Also note that I am not early decision. Interviews should be coming your way soon!
Thanks Darth! Thats awesome about the II! First date of the season I presume, Congrats to you!

"The force is strong with this one."

Congrats! Was it a call or email? Mind sharing your stats and complete date? Pretty please! 😛

It was by phone and then you get a email with all the interview and parking info. I got my complete email on July 29th (I called them to ask about whether they received my files, and got the complete email that night). My stats are MCAT:31, GPA >=3.8. Good luck to the rest of your guys😛!!! Need to purchase a new interview attire this weekend.😎

Congrats! Are u a nj resident?

I called the admissions office again today as I did not receive a complete email and the person I spoke to 2 days ago failed to return my phone call after their app system regained function.

This is the information I found out:
- My file is in fact complete and is under review by the committee.
- Interviews start at the end of August and continue into April.

Not very exciting, but at least I know they received everything.

I'm an OOS applicant with no ties to NJ, so this school is a bit of a reach for me. Good luck to everyone who's applying!

I also got an II for 8/20.

I was OOS until 2 weeks ago when I finally legalized my residency in NJ after living here for 1.5 years. But I submitted my secondary in June...so it had my present NJ address & my permanent OOS address.

27 MCAT
3.73 sci / 3.81 cum
2000+ hours of clinical, community and research

okay so the instructions are font size 12 and limit essays to one page double spaced per question...

Just curious what font style did everyone use... what about margins... I can barely fit 300 words per page with Times New Roman...

Good luck everyone. We just finished Orientation. You guys are making an awesome choice by applying here, I can tell you that.

One inch margins are the typical standard, with Times New Roman.

I took the option of having lunch with med students before my interview. Does anyone know where the lunch will be held? None of my emails said anything about location or building, etc. Thanks!

I'm also not trying to be picky, but does Rowan offer good food? I can't have anything with dairy or gluten lol.

Call admissions and let them know your dietary restrictions. They can accommodate if they know ahead of time.

Hi, for the secondary essay, when they say one page, is it single or double spaced.

Thanks

double spaced... I am pretty sure I read that in the directions... let me know if it is not the case though... 🙂

Thanks for the information... I hopefully will be turning in my secondary soon... I really found these essays difficult to write because they teased apart the reasons for me choosing this career into two essays... I always associate one with the other... my process for choosing the field with my values/goals... I chose it because it as I learned about the field I saw that the field met my goals and values... I hope the admissions committee likes my essays... 🙂

Is it suppose to be 2 separate essays or 1 essay that addresses both questions?

Thanks

Two essays...

Applicant Essays:

Please attach your responses to the following questions: (Please use font size 12 and limit your essays to one page double spaced per question.)

Required essays:

1. Explain the process by which you decided that osteopathic medicine was right for you?

2. How does the osteopathic profession fit into your professional goals and values?

Optional additional essay:
3. Please describe any significant barriers or challenges you may have overcome in the pursuit of your personal/professional goals.

Teasing out my answer between one and two was hard for me... hopefully the ADCOM will like my essays

its really not that difficult, the first asks about the past & how you got here, and the 2nd asks about your future, where you'll take your education and what you'll do with it.

When I had the lunch, it was pizza in the admissions office. You should have seen all of us eating pizza and trying to avoid getting anything on our suits.

Omg vom. I'm trying to be healthy and practice "clean" eating. I was hoping for salads, or lean meats.
I only agreed to go on lunch with the medical students just because I thought it would look bad if I said no lol. Plus I wanted a tour of the school. Now it's going to look even worse when I refuse to eat pizza lol, theyre probably going to think I'm snobbish.

Some don't eat because they're nervous. Don't stress how you may appear. They sometimes provide sandwiches and salad.

Is anyone else doing the DO/JD program? I'm wondering if I take my LSAT by early February would that still be enough time to qualify for law school admission?

You don't have to apply right now. You have time. So no, February LSAT is not late.

when you are there, you do not have to eat lunch. Eat something that is clear. A salad with no dressing for instance, drink a sprite or water. You can always eat later. Remember you are interviewing the school just as much as the school is interviewing you. This is your chance to ask the student tour guides all of the questions that you want to know about the school. Even the most mundane questions if you want. If you get hungry and there are sandwiches, stay away from things with mayo, eat the bread alone or eat the sandwich dry. Your admission is not going to be determined whether or not you liked the food. I was not only a student tour guide at umdnj but I as also on the adcom for 1 year.

UMDNJ-SOM does not have a strong instate preference at all. "We are only focused on applicants with the highest scores regardless of where they are from." Paula Watkins

Interesting...

This is from their website...

"RowanSOM does give some preference to NJ residents, but out of state applicants are encouraged to apply."

They "say" that but they are a public university and therefore are required to accept mostly IS applicants.

submitted my secondary about a month ago, still no confirmation letter. Should I call?

Rowan, where is the love for your OOSers?

Maybe next week OOSers will get some action. Heres to hoping!

Complete email today. I though they didn't send out complete emails? Oh well..
