I wrote them a letter of intent with my campus preference and an additional letter a month afterwards.
 
Word from admissions is that the list is moving slowly. I'm beginning to lose hope. This whole process has sucked me dry of my ambition to be a doctor. I wish you guys the best but I will be enjoying the rest of my summer. No posts from me anymore unless accepted.
 
You guys just have to hang in there, apparently these things move all summer (note: just from word of mouth, I have no inside knowledge). It's just an awful thing to wait, trust me I know. I'm also entering the class a quite a bit of time after my undergraduate degree is finished, so I've been waiting and not giving up for a long time. I'm sure you don't want to hear it, but about four years ago when I started this I sat down with a few people and they told me to my face I would never get in. The point is, don't give up. Of course that is somewhat of an empty assurance coming anonymously online but I've been waiting, so to speak, for a looong time by my standards, and at this moment those years are finally all worth it.

As for letters of intent, I wrote a very nice email after I interviewed, updated my info a little after, and then checked back in sometime in March. For me though, I had emailed Upstate (and many other schools) a year before I applied asking questions and seeking advice, and they were one of the very, very few schools to respond back. I really appreciated that, and when I was there I tried to track down and thank everyone in the office. My interest was pretty well laid out, but it meant a lot to me that in one of my moments of panic before I even applied that some schools actually would take the time to help me out. Very surprised/disappointed by the amount of schools that did not.

So from a somewhat 'older' applicant, don't let this patch throw you off course. It's not worth it.

It is too early to lose hope. I know of at least 5 people contemplating upstate and another school. I wish all of you the very best, and I may be giving up my spot as well.

Apparently, I'm in the grey area. God I hate waiting. Thanks for putting up this post, you guys are really cool and congrats to those of you who have already received a phone call.

Any other movement? I'm going to drop them an e-mail to see about any changes. I've heard nothing as of yet.

I'm really getting pressed for time here. I've got a girlfriend who needs to find a job wherever we're moving, a house/apartment/condo to rent/buy, bills to pay, loose ends to tie up... And I know I'm not alone. Here's hoping for some news real soon!

Hey everyone,

Another high priority alternate here still waiting for a call to the show. I'm still hanging on to what was told to me by the doctor who interviewed me: that there is little difference between being accepted outright and being placed on the HPA list.

For those who are interested, when I called to get an update on my HPA status, I was told that given previous HPA history, I hold a good position. However, due to a variety of circumstances, she could not guarantee that I would get in. Whether this is better/worse/same as the "gray area" that I'm hearing from many of you, I'm not sure.

Hello everyone! Congrats on your acceptances! If anyone is looking for off campus housing myself and another med student are planning on renting a 3 bedroom about 1.3 miles away. Its 910 per month and has off street parking and free laundry. Its completey renovated and has a deck and a small back yard. I have pictures if anyone is interested!
 
Congratulations fede! I can see from your posts that you've done a great job keeping yourself and other HPAs positive (and acting graciously to those who were accepted in front of you) - you are definitely deserving of that spot!

I think that there may have been some movement (I have no basis for saying this except for that I doubt I was the last one...just a feeling) but maybe the people who have been called don't use SDN or haven't posted for some reason.😕

I just withdrew my Upstate acceptance, hopefully it'll go to a SDNer on this thread 🙂. I really loved the school but decide to go somewhere else due to personal reasons. Best of luck to those of you still waiting :luck:

I got a phone message from Carolyn Couch of the admissions office regarding my application on Wednesday, but I was unable to get in touch with her until this morning. She is out of the office today but I was told to call back Monday and that they thought she was offering me acceptance so its important that I only talk to her. I think I'm in, just got to wait until Monday to find out for sure.

I called yesterday, yep I'm in. Now I just have to figure out what the heck to do to get everything ready. I live in NC too which makes this even more difficult to get stuff together, but SUNY was incredibly impressive campus and I'm looking forward to it.

is anyone here still on the waitlist or thinking of withdrawing???
 
Historically, Upstate has taken people off the waitlist well into August, although, of course, these numbers vary from year to year. I know there have been occasions where someone was taken the first day of orientation. The key at this point is where you stand on the waitlist. Based on history, it is likely a spot or two will still come through. I am not involved in the admissions process, so I don't want you to think I am basing this on personal experience...just passive observation over the past few years and from what others involved in the process have told me. I thought this information might be helpful. Best of luck to all of you!!
