SUNY Upstate Waitlist Thread-- 2009

Hey guys,

I have seen on the Buffalo thread that there is waitlist movement there. How can it be that there is movement at Buffalo but no movement at all at Upstate?

Do you guys think that there are openings already but we just haven't heard anything - either because we have not been chosen to be accepted yet, or because it is Upstate policy not to accept anyone off of the HPA list at this point until after May 15th??

Or do you really think no one has dropped out of the class at this point?

Not sure. Everything is speculation right now. People with multiple acceptances will be withdrawing from now until May 15 so all we could do is wait and hope for the best.

there is waitlist movement on the buffalo thread because of the way that they schedule the interview with their applicants.

They are still interviewing people and its still for non waitlist spots. Essentially, the upperthird waitlist of Buffalo is more of a post interview hold.

I second this. Upstate seems to be one of those schools that do not even touch their WL until 5/15, as I was told by their admiss staff via email -"there will be no WL movement until 5/15"

I think it's definitely a good WL to be on b/c SUNYs generally tend to have more movements than the private schools (esp. if u're in state)

I gave up my spot today (4/15) that I held onto since around Christmas time. Ultimately, I wanted to be closer to metro NY, so Downstate or Stony Brook are more attractive for me.

Speaking of neuroticness, I just noticed that both Funky and I got the same june msg from Upstate while one other earlier poster got the "If you do not hear by July please contact us". Maybe it is implying that we "should" 😛 both hear something before June???
Yeah, the wait is getting to me 😀

I emailed Jennifer Walsh about my waitlist rank and I got something along the lines of, "If you do not hear by June please contact us". So she didn't tell me anything. Unless she means I'm in a good place and if I do not hear by June then the Waitlist has absolutely no movement. I mean she did use an exclamation mark at the end of the email.. very hopeful..

One could only speculate. 🙂

I've been trying to beat Fallout 3 this whole semester but I'm not even halfway through it because of school. Maybe after tomorrow I'll get back into it but I sort of want to start either a Scorsese marathon or a 24 marathon.

I'm hoping that's a positive, ie they expect to reach me eventually but if the list is moving really slow then by July they will know if they reach my spot (so otherwise don't bother them). Yea, the wait is making me crazy! I was put on the waitlist sometime in mid october, for reference.

I have one other school who still has not rendered a decision post interview, and my final interview in two days. Driving me nuts, this is such a stressful year waiting. None of this is an attempt to make anyone feel bad, or me feel good, but this waiting is just so terrible. Especially since Upstate is my first choice by far.

So they actually did tell that u should call in July 🙄. Maybe the months are just random responses that they give the WLsters so that they could get us off their backs. I'm really not happy with the fact that they refuse to tell us anything abt our positions on the WL even at this pt while they did provide more info in the past cycles 😕.

haha, you know, I have my freak out moments but I'm just so happy to even be considered by Upstate. There was such a long road for me to get here, and not to get too personal, but I'm truly a second-chance applicant and it was just so nice for them to be the first school to see it.

That said, whatever happens, I just try and have a healthy disdain for the entire application process and am grateful I even rolled the dice. So info, no info, I think it just makes people crazier (though really there is no reason the commit date could not be advanced, say to April 15th or May 1st for folks with multiple spots held and Upstate is BY FAR one of the most responsive and attentive schools to apps and pre-apps I have dealt with). If God forbid nothing works out for us, then that's awful but there is always reapplication. Here's hoping the best though, and for me just appreciating how far I have come in tandem with a thankfulness that someone recognized me as at least being on the radar.

I just consulted the AAMC webpage (http://www.aamc.org/students/applying/policies/applicants.htmabout) and this is what it said:

AAMC Recommendations for Medical School Applicants

The following recommendations are promulgated by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to ensure that applicants are afforded timely notification of the outcome of their medical school applications and timely access to available first-year positions and that schools are protected from having unfilled positions in their entering classes. These recommendations are being distributed for the information of prospective medical students, their advisors, and personnel at the medical schools to which they have applied.

(skipping to the relevant part)

8. In fairness to other applicants, when an applicant has made a decision, prior to May 15, not to attend a medical school that has made an offer of acceptance, the applicant promptly withdraw his or her application from that (those) other school(s) by written correspondence delivered by regular or electronic methods.

9. By May 15 of the matriculation year (April 15 for schools whose first day of class is on or before July 30), each applicant who has received an offer of acceptance from more than one school choose the specific school at which the applicant prefers to enroll and withdraw his or her application, by written correspondence delivered by regular or electronic methods, from all other schools from which acceptance offers have been received.

10. Immediately upon enrollment in, or initiation of an orientation program immediately prior to enrollment at, a U.S. or Canadian school, each applicant withdraw his or her application from consideration at all other schools at which he or she remains under consideration.

So, after reading this, I am a little disconcerted about the fact that these are "recommendations" and not "regulations"...😕

Well anyway, let's hope that our fellow applicants have sufficient consideration for those of us on the waitlist that they follow the abovementioned "recommendations"!!!

just emailed again abt my status on the HPA, got the same response "still too early to tell @ this pt" & but they did mention that they would be making some changes to the process this yr.

Speaking of the changes, the only difference that Upstate have made so far IMO is refusing to reveal our positions on the WL unlike what they have done in the 2008 cycle (where ppl were already getting some info from admiss by now) 😕

Upstate loves updates. Write to them. Call them. Do something to show continued interest. But in the mean time start preparing for another cycle if needed. I read somewhere that if your waiting on wait list and thinking about reapplying, that its best to submit the amcas with only 1 school and update later if necessary. (to save $$ in case you get accepted off the wait list)

Thanks for the link, Kai 🙂. Although it seems like Upstate's doing the same thing this yr as in the 2006 cycle (keeping the WL immobile till 5/15), I certainly hope the movement is just as big
