Hey! First post on SDN. I didn't see any threads for the CO 2023, and in the midst of applications starting soon I thought I would make a thread. Feel free to post about your experiences, or general questions about applying/interviewing at UMKC SOD!
Good luck everyone!:highfive:

Does UMKC send out supplementals? Do I need to do anything right now beside apply through ADEA?

I'm not positive on the supplemental.. I don't see anything on their website about it. I would imagine if they DO have one then they will notify you to fill it out.

Hey guys, I just wanted to wish you all good luck on the application process. I'm gonna be starting D1 this August, so if you have any questions about the application process, feel free to ask or send a pm, as I just went through it. Best of luck to all of you.

For those that have received a supplemental app, has your application been verified by ADEA AADSAS?

Hey there! Sorry I'm just now seeing this. My cumulative GPA was 3.62 and Science was 3.57. DAT AA:20 TS: 20 PAT: 22. I'm also a Kansas Resident, and UMKC gives preference to Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Hawaii students. I had over 100 shadowing hours, lots of volunteering. Hope this helps.

It does help thank you. Do you know how they weigh in on someone with a master degree? And how the look at the undergrad GPA and the masters GPA?

AADSAS calculates your GPA. When you send them your transcripts they calculate your GPA like 25 different ways with different combinations of subjects like "Total Science," "Bio, Chem, Phys," "Cum undergrad," "Cum grad" so they'll be able to see it all. I know UMKC uses the "without +/-" gpa numbers, which worked out for me and my GPA on the application was a little higher than on my actual transcript. I think "without +/-" means they count B+ as a B (3.0) and A- as an A (4.0) to make it standard for all students because different colleges use different grading systems. Hope this helps!

They only look at without +/- :( Did you hear it from someone from the admissions office?! Do you know if they lean towards BCP of Sgpa? I have a 21/21/23 TS/AA/RC. And a 3.2 3.25 sgpa/BCP but without +/- it is a 3.15/3.2. Really hoping to attend this school. I grew up in Overland Park and love KC!

Hey guys! For those of you that have completed the supplemental, are there additional essays/questions that are UMKC specific? I just want to get a feel before I receive mine. Thanks!

No one told me that from the admissions office or anything, I'm just going off what I observed. And when I interviewed, at the end of the interview day you have to check out with an admissions staff member and they give you this sheet of paper with all your information on it to make sure it is correct (DAT, GPA, address, phone number) and on that sheet, the GPA's for me were the "without +/-" GPA calculations done by AADSAS. If you have questions about this, you can always call the admissions office and ask for yourself. Also i'm a KS resident and from OP as well! Good luck with this cycle.

Also not sure if any of you guys know this or not, but Wes Parham, the director of Admissions at UMKC School of Dentistry resigned from his position as of May 23rd. Not quite sure who or if anyone is replacing him. Just thought I'd let you guys know in case you were trying to contact him or anything.

Are y'all sure you received the actual supplemental? Because the emailed link from Richie Bigham was not the supplemental, it's just the general UMKC application that you have to fill out and pay the fee on after your AADSAS one is all done. UMKC SOD typically doesn't send out supplementals until August and it is invite-only and comes along with your interview invitation.

Jennifer Pennington is the person to talk to if you would otherwise have contacted Wes, or Richie Bigham I think.

You're totally right. The secondary application is given ONLY to those who are asked to interview. I just looked back at mine and mine was 13 pages long.......The general UMKC application is what is used to determine University awards like the Chancellor's Historically Underrepresented Minority Award and stuff like that.

Just wanted to share a little math with you guys about UMKC based on the 2017 ADEA book!

Of the 97 IS applicants that interviewed, 72 were offered acceptances. Meaning there's a 75% of being accepted if you get an interview

Of the 78 OOS applicants that were interviewed, 63 were offered an acceptance. Which means there is an 81% of being accepted if you attend the interview.

Yes, if you are offered an interview, you have very good odds of being accepted. My advice would be thoroughly fill out the secondary application, I know it's long and takes forever but it's worth it. Make sure all your information on the secondary matches your AADSAS application, obviously things like community service hours and shadowing hours can change but just make sure that everything is being reported correctly.

Hey guys, I have followed SDN for as long as I can remember and today I finally am able to post that I received an interview from UMKC today! You guys can do it too, have faith!! :)

@eclaire when was your application complete?
On the day the application opened, like June 6th or whenever that was. They send interview invitations/supplementals all the way through October I think, and I'm fairly certain they only started sending them last week. It's a fluid process - I even have a friend who just started as a first-year yesterday who only got accepted three-ish? weeks ago. The priority deadline for the application hasn't even passed yet, so don't worry just yet.

It's still fairly early in the process. Most schools have spent their summer getting their entering D1 classes prepared to start school and making sure they all have their proper paperwork, vaccination records, etc. submitted. I didn't get asked to interview at UMKC until October. I interviewed later that month and got accepted Dec 1. There are like 5-6 people from the day I interviewed in our D1 class, so don't stress yet.

@KCpredent how do you like the school?
So far I really like the school. Everyone is super supportive of the D1 class which is really nice. Older students are always willing to give advice and help whenever you need it. It's only week two of classes so maybe my assessment will change, but so far it's been good. The work load is pretty heavy already as we had two quizzes today after only a week of classes, so you have that to look forward to. The school has a great reputation in Missouri, Kansas, and surrounding states as well as nationally. I got into another dental school, but chose UMKC because of their great clinical education. I start assisting in the clinic next week, so they give you lots of clinical opportunities early on in the program.

@KCpredent do you have any advice from me? I submitted my application around August 5th and I'm still waiting to hear back. I'm currently getting lots of hours shadowing general dentist and working as a dental assistant

I would just continue to shadow a variety of dentists, not just general dentists. Try to shadow some specialists like pedodontists, endodontists, oral surgeons, etc. I would continue to keep volunteering and if you're in school keep your grades up because if asked to interview, there is an "application update" after the interview where they ask for your midterm grades. Other than that, just keep working hard.

YOU GUYS!!!!!!! I got my interview invite on Friday!!!!!!!! There aren't words to describe my relief and excitement! I am the definition of a non-traditional student: 42 years old with a wife and 4 children, left my 16 year career in order to become a full time student and apply to dental school. The sacrifice looks to be paying off.

@KCpredent: Currently filling out the supplemental. Any advice? In your opinion, should I keep my answers to this mother of a supplemental short and sweet or be more detailed?
