University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If I sent in a primary now, any chance of me getting an interview before its all up. 26mcat(9ps,6vr,11bs) 3.4sGPA 3.3gpa, great lors and clinical exp. Just curious since Ive gotten 4 acceptances so far. But my wives family is in Tx and she would be better off. Any chance you think?

The deadline already passed :/ sorry my friend! But congrats on your other acceptances!

As a side note, I do think it's always worth a try to apply to Texas even though OOS applicants only fill 10% of the class. It's an amazing school and is totally worth the extra effort to do another common app IMO.

Is it too early to call and inquire about application status?

I would say yes, just because they are trying to process over 2000 applications and are extremly busy at this time of the year, so I would give it some more time and maybe contact after pre-match if you haven't heard anything. Remember they give interviews all the way up til January.

I don't think they're going till January this year unless they feel the need to squeeze in more interviews for some reason.

Thanks for the reply, didn't know they were going until January, makes me feel better. Applied 8/17 mcat 10P 6V 10B GPA 3.3 with 7 pending publications and a lot of shadowing. So mcat is holding me down, but looking for some love from this awesome school!

Well when I went through my interview season last year I interviewed at TCOM early but I interviewed at two other Texas schools in late December. I know a couple of classmates that also interviewed at TCOM were during mid December. Last year they conducted 829 interviews which is alot. If you applied late then its possible that you can still get an interview, however if you applied early your odds are decreasing..Goodluck!

Where did you get accepted with stats like that??? I'm pretty similar to you, but no II yet, anywhere. 😡

Phone call last Thursday, but no follow-up email...nervous😳
Is this normal?

Wohoooo!! Interview Invite! Very happy because I was raised in Texas and have strong ties to the state. With that being said, I was blown away by DMU and was recently accepted there. If I am lucky enough to be accepted, it will be a VERY hard choice....

Oh man, I'm in the same situation and understand your dilemma. I got into DMU too and for a while I was really torn between DMU and UNT.
After a lot of thought, I came to realize that both schools had strengths that I valued but in the end I'd choose UNT. We can chat about it over PM if you want! Congrats on the interview! This school is amazing.

I had heard good things about TCOM, but what impressed me the most was what I saw on my interview day and the people I met. It is an amazing school in an amazing location, no wonder there is much love for it in Texas.

Was the interview laid back? How do you guys feel about the curriculum. I heard from several students that did the masters program and then visited the medical school that they thought the curriculum was "disorganized"--just voicing their concerns and my own.

Also, is it really class from 8AM-5PM (including labs) for first year?

I agree 100%. The school is amazing and everyone is so very friendly and helpful. The students seem legitimately happy, which is very important when choosing a school.

Both of my interviews were conversational, especially the one I had with a DO. I really enjoyed my interview with the DO actually. The interview I had with a Ph. D was a little bit more awkward but still nothing stressful.

The curriculum is systems based, which I think is preferable. The students I spoke with preferred this over the idea of block scheduling. And as far as I understand, most days are not 8-5. There are blocks of the schedule dedicated to self study of assigned topics, which makes it look like the student are in lectures all day, but I've been assured by the ambassadors as well as a friend that is currently attending that most days they have the majority of the afternoon off (except on days they have anatomy lab of course). The time actually spent in lectures is minimal.

I LOVED the curriculum here. They do an integrated systems based. So for example, if you're doing cardiology, you'll be doing pharm, anatomy, path, of cardiology all at the same time. I think it's a great curriculum. I also like the self study and case studies in groups.

I really like their curriculum, I thinks is really well organized, and yes, the interviews are pretty laid back, conversational...

tcom disorganized? lol. i'm half way done with 2nd yr, and i have no idea what those people are talking about.
i think the curriculum is well planned and well run. it's a proven, time-tested program.
everyone complains about the hard exams, but i haven't heard anyone complain about the curriculum. (and why would they? why mess with success?)

To be blunt, this sounds like sour grapes from medsci people who didn't get a spot. That's how my friend acted after her rejection. 😕

I'm sure there are individual variations among professors just like anywhere else, but just because a class is taught by 3 or 4 different people (and the exam is put together by 3 or 4 different people) doesn't mean the class or the entire curriculum is disorganized!

Personally I love the TCOM curriculum and how it covers every system twice (normal and then disease process), and every system is covered exhaustively by a team of professors who are clinical physicians and professors from the graduate school.

every class is highly structured and coordinated by a coordinator or committee. everyone operates to a daily schedule with an agenda that is posted months in advance. for exams, every question is chosen by committee. if you don't attend lectures, there is a pre exam review where you can ask questions before the exam, and there is a post exam review where you can argue with the professors about the answers. (if your performance is subpar, you'll get an email or even a phone call very quickly after the exam). btw exams are now paperless.
there is very little about tcom that is 'disorganized'.

5 days guys. I read some posts many pages back saying that people who interviewed in October would more likely be in a round of December acceptances and not in the first November 15 round. Is this traditionally how it goes?

I don't think that's true at all. August interviewees can be just as unimpressive as December interviewees, and November interviewees can be far more impressive than August. They'll pick who they like the most.

Prematch in 4 days. Wonder how many prematches will go out nov 15.

I meant more on the lines of time it took to make decision. Like does it take more than a month after an interview for decisions to be made. I suppose it depends on the applicant, but I imagine people who interviewed last week are very unlikely to have a decision this week.

I saw on last years thread that someone who interviewed the first week of November received a November 15th prematch. Anything is possible...

The decision is pretty much made within a few days, either they want you, they'll take you if they can't find someone better, or they don't want you. If you're in the first group you're likely to get a pre match. The second group may get a prematch, but will likely get in at the match or off the waitlist. And the last group is just outta luck.

Hey guys. I'm new to SDN. I interviewed here in September and I really hope I prematch. TCOM is an awesome school! Good luck to everyone on Thursday!

Do they still send interviews after nov 15

If they have interview slots open, then yes. I think this year they will keep sending invites into the end of November/beginning of December, depending on how good they feel about their interviewees up till that point, and how many people turn down interviews/prematches after getting accepted elsewhere. I think they're scheduled to finish in late December, before Christmas.

3 more days!!! I am just keeping my hopes up!!

Yep. I've seen interviewees on campus many a times in December.

Who knows, but that was an uninformed comment. Socially TCOM is laid back, but academically TCOM runs a very tight ship. I have nothing but praise for the curriculum and the faculty teaching it.

I'm not sure if I'm the tight ship type but was very impressed with the facilities and match list.

I visited TCOM when they had sort of an open house for families. One of the speakers mentioned that the attrition rate is very low because they have a good support system for new students. I really hope to get an invite this cycle before it's too late.

I dont mean to be rude but what do you mean you are not the tight ship type?

I dont think anyone here would want to attend a med school that can be considered "easy", I personally think that the tighter the curriculum the better prepared will be the graduates and that will translate into better doctors and less problems down the road (malpractice and stuff)

Besides, the easier the school, the easier the admission, the lower the standards; if I wanted an easy school I would apply in a foreign country, I heard that in some countries you just have to apply and pay the tuition and you are in.

just my opinion...

Essentially tomorrow night is the big day. I'm gonna try and sleep and just check in the morning though.

Yea when I pre-matched I didn't get a notice from TCOM til 9-10 AM in the morning the day of pre-match.

Hey everyone,
First and foremost, I am going to apologize for my ignorance before asking some questions. ( I recently received an interview here after Nov 15 and haven't had a chance to thoroughly research about the match process).

Like I said, my interview is after November 15th. I have yet to be invited to interviews at any of the other Texas schools. Do I need to do anything in terms of logging on to TMDSAS and ranking the Texas schools (before or after pre-match)?.

I'm not sure. I just recently logged in and ranked TCOM #1, but I believe it said you don't have to rank them till Jan 21st or something.

😎 Well at least I'll be able to sleep then. Hopefully my microbiology lab TA won't mind me checking my emails all morning lol.

hi, i'm just being neurotic and wanted to ask what my chances are of prematching on thursday - i know nobody on here would really know, but based on past anecdotal examples please humor me.

instate
non-URM
applied late september
interviewed mid october
3.4/26

I was wondering if the fact that I only applied to TCOM and expressed knowledge of osteopathy and desire to be a DO would increase my likelihood of prematching first, since if I am accepted I'm 100% sure I'm going to TCOM and won't be wasting their time 🙂

I'm extremely nervous and have been checking my HSC portal daily in fear of the "your application has been reviewed, any decision will come via US mail" message, and so far it has remained as "your application is under review"...for now

thank you, and good luck to everyone

Troll.

I logged on and got this message:

You have not been interviewed by any of the schools you applied. Please return to the homepage.
You have interviewed with and are maintaining an active application with the schools listed below. Rank the schools in order of your preference in the list below (i.e. the school ranked 1 would be your top choice school). Your preferences will be used in the match process in an attempt to match you to your highest ranked school (if that school ranks you accordingly).

So, I guess I have to wait until I interview with the school before the school pops up on that page and then I can rank it? anyone else know about this that is interviewing after pre-match?

If memory serves, you should be able to use the rank list as soon as your first interview is reported to TMDSAS - but not before.
