University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have not interviewed. Although, I'm sure that every school will ask, "Why [insert school here]?" I don't think it should be that difficult to articulate why you want to go to TCOM. Do you have an interview date?
Nope I wish. Yeah, agreed on why you want to go to TCOM, I'm just lookin for any insight into more specific questions maybe. Best of luck to ya!

Hey guys! Current 1st year student here. This week was exciting seeing all the people interviewing. TCOM is such a great school-I always feel proud that our campus is being shown off to potential students 🙂

It reminded me of last year though and how scary/nerve racking the whole application/interview process is. If you guys have any questions at all feel free to PM me.

A little about me: I'm a non-trad who took the MCAT twice (with my first score being terrible). The greatest strength in my application definitely was all my extracurricular activities/volunteer experiences/shadowing hours/leadership roles. I was initially terrified to apply to school. I didn't feel like I was a strong enough applicant based solely on my GPA/MCAT alone. But the advice I received on SDN really helped me through the application process and I feel was a strong reason I was accepted to school. I'd love to pass on any helpful information to you guys.

When I say TCOM is a great school-I mean it. I feel so honored to go here. Every student I have met is bright, hard working, and earnest. People care about doing well and what that means for our future patients. The curriculum is tough but the environment is supportive. I'm glad to have been given the opportunity to come here.

I could literally go on and on and on. PM me if you have any questions or concerns!

So I had my application (including secondary and all supporting documents) complete and submitted on July 17th. The application status still just says "This Application is Complete." I've always heard TCOM has a fairly quick turn around. So, should I be worried?

I submitted everything 7/16 and still haven't heard a thing! So if you're worried so am I...

I agree with you guys, terribly anxious about getting in II from this school. My application was complete on 7/8. But at the same time I don't have a MCAT >30 so I am not surprised I havent heard anything from them yet. It seems from information I have seen on other threads on IIs that most of the students are the ones that have a MCAT >30 and that have applied early.

Could you tell us your stats?
I am really concerned about my chances. Took MCAT 3 times., first 2 were terrible. I have family problems and divorce. Now did it again and got a 23 (V7,P8, B8). I am still on my way to take another one in September but worried. I am non traditional, work in the OR of a major hospital in Houston (about 40to 55hrs a week), research (publications), and 3.89 GPA. I am so mad because I know I am not an idiot I guess I just don't get this stupid MCAT.

Hi Nessa,

I'm sorry to hear about your personal problems and that they have affected your MCAT score.

The first time I took the MCAT I approached it in a fairly immature way. I got very overwhelmed with all the material and didn't study as much as I should have. My first attempt I scored a 23 which felt fairly devastating. The second time I took the MCAT I used a "triage" approach. I focused on the material I thought I could master (like bio, verbal, gen chem) and then only learned the most high yield information for the other subjects (mainly physics and orgo). Doing it this way I scored a 30. I don't want to post my complete admission stats on the board so I can continue to have some anonymity, but if you PM I would be glad to share.

TCOM places a lot of emphasis on personal growth and development. I think for you it's going to be really important that you have a large jump in your score for the test you take in September. This will help show that you are dedicated to becoming a physician and are capable of overcoming personal hurdles. Sit down and try to really evaluate why you are having troubles and what you can do to fix them.

Your gpa and ec's look good. The great thing (among the many) about TCOM is they really do consider the whole person when selecting their applicants. Get over the MCAT bump and some doors should open for you.

You can do this Nessa! If I can do it, you can do it too.

As for the rest of you guys...the waiting for the II is definitely the hardest part. And I know when you are waiting on what feels like your future, it makes it that much harder.

Just know IIs go well out into October/November. It's still very early on in the game.

I have some friends that didn't get an invite till December. I personally didn't get invited till November. Too early to worry, but at this time last year, I was worrying like crazy. That's just the way it is so all you can do is try to distract yourself. Good luck everyone.

Uhh primary 5/28, secondary within a week of that... But my transcripts didn't send til 6/18 or my letter or rec from the school til 7/22

You are definitely so sweet!
I am trying. My first verbal score was a 4 and now a 7 (Born and raised in Brazil, came to the US first year of college, 6 yrs ago), so although the main score isn't impressive I am happy. I lifted my verbal!!! I feel bad because although I studied the sciences, I focused a lot more on my verbal... Oh well, now I just need to keep pushing!!

Thank you for the encouragement! I do need to get this done.

Finally gave in and made an account lol. Got an II yesterday.

Primary: 6/24
Secondary: 7/14
GPA: 3.68/3.61
MCAT:27 7/9/11
Pretty strong ec's with no research.

So there is hope after all! :soexcited:

thats what i have been told by multiple docs i work with, am working problems daily, and can literally see the difference in the way am answering the questions. Wish i had started working on problems earlier...but feel a lot better about mcat this time around...hopefully ace it and start getting interviews by october.
I have extensive healthcare experience and they still are going to want solid numbers. As another poster said, experience cannot make up for low numbers. I also had numerous LOR from physicians at a one of the best medical schools in the country but that did not make up for my GPA of 3.3 at the Texas MDs.

i hear you, i just need to do well on my mcat, my gpa is not bad. So hopefully this MCAT goes well. I have been going through a lot of threads, i have noticed getting a 10 on verbal and making a 26-28 would be good enough with my EC and LOR's. I came across a nurse on here with same stats and was accepted to texas tech and tcom. So come next month i need to replicate what i have been consistently making on my verbals.

Congrats! We have similar stats so hopefully I hear something soon too! When are you interviewing?

II from Caroline just now!

Primary: 06/16/14
Secondary: 08/03/14
sGPA: 3.77/ cGPA: 3.87
MCAT: 26

Very Nontrad

Have faith guys, I didn't think I was getting a II anywhere

How were you contacted for an II? My application status page says "you have been invited for an interview," but I have not received an email or phone call inviting me. Do you or anybody else know what that means?

She called me. About 30 minutes before she called I checked my portal and it still said "your app is complete". Right after the phone call, I was curious and checked again and it said "you have been invited for an interview". I don't want to be overly optimistic, but i HIGHLY doubt they would change your status if you weren't going to be receiving a call soon. Congrats!

There was a delay between the status change and the phone-call/email for some people last year. This most likely means good news!

Very exciting to hear about all of these IIs! Congrats to everyone!

Also, were you able to choose an interview date or did she just assign you a date to accept?

For me, they offered a day and I accepted it. It seemed like I would have been able to choose a different day if the first one didn't work for me. Also, I think you could always ask for a later date, but asking for earlier might be tricky.

Thanks! When she called she wanted to schedule it while she had me on the phone. She did give me options on the phone and was willing to wait for me to check my schedule, so I simply took the earliest available. Conflicts with a class but oh well.

Did anyone apply for the Early Decision Program and hear back?

Submitted secondary 05/27 and still no feedback :/

To move up your date, you'd need for someone to cancel - which doesn't happen often.

I received an II last week. Submitted: 6/7/14. Transmitted: 6/24/14, but LORs didn't come in till 8/4/14. Secondary: 8/3/14.

Stats: LizzyM of 73 IS, lots of underserved volunteer hours, no research, and never shadowed with a D.O..

Definitely getting worried with these II's going out. Submitted my primary and secondary in Mid to late June. Complete mid July. Should I have heard back already?

Application status says "Your application has been reviewed." Secondary submitted 8/8, updated MCAT score submitted today. Am I in some pre-interview rejection purgatory?

What were your stats? "Reviewed" meant rejection last year, but I don't see how this status would show before the app cycle ended. Strange...
