University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From my experience last year, the call comes on an iPhone as "Unknown." It's then followed up with an email.

For those with portal changes, expect a phone call next week as described above.

It would be awesome if those that have been invited for an interview would share date complete and stats. Thanks guys/gals! Good luck and congrats!

II today (I think)!

No phone call but I checked my portal and "You have been invited for an interview".

Congrats! Do you mind sharing the date for the interview if it says it online too? Also when did you submit your primary and secondary if you don't mind me asking?

Interview date doesn't show online; you arrange it over the phone when you get the interview call.

I submitted my primary 5/20 and my secondary sometime in the beginning of June

Everyone getting interview invites but I haven't even submitted my application 🙁

submitted secondary early May OOS
cGPA 3.9
sGPA 3.85
MCAT 34
Still says "your application has been received..."

After they review your application and decide that they don't intend to send you an II will they reject you right away or just leave you in a pile and merely send you rejection months later?

It's more of a silent rejection. Something like, "Your application is complete," has been the only indicator.

Edit: or it might be something like "Your application has been reviewed."

Looking forward to visiting this school next month!

Can confirm I was offered the 7/28 and 8/4 dates - both Tuesdays.

I just got a called from "No Caller ID" number to have my interview on 8/4.
Anyone wants to split the hotel stay??

I was offered 7/28 8/4 and 8/14 this afternoon

Do you know what kind of interview questions will be asked on the interview? or any preps?
Please let me know if you do and PM me
Thank you!!!!

Is anyone going on 7/28? I'm nervous to do it so early but I had finals on the other days

Congrats on the interviews. Im hoping to get into a TMDSAS school but that's difficult as an OOS applicant with avg stats.

Whoever gets an interview, state your stats if you don't mind?

To the people who received interviews, were your applications complete - more specifically, were your LORs/Packet all submitted?

I googled 'medical school interview questions' and printed off a list of about 100+ questions to prepare with on my trip to FW. It seemed to be more than adequate, but that's n=1. In general for any DO school, you should have a good reason for why [insert school] and why DO.

The interview day as a whole is very relaxed. Your interviews will feel more like conversations than just questions and answers.

Oh and it's okay to wear something different than a black suit, white shirt, and red tie.

Has anyone received an email with the interview details?

I'm still waiting to receive the "unknown number" phone call but my portal shows that I have been invited to an interview. Is anyone else on the same boat as I am?

I'm confident in my application and stats, but am starting to get antsy. I thought I would handle the wait better. I submitted my secondary on 6/10, but I think my additional recommendation letter took another week and a half to be sent off. Am I still in a good time frame to be expecting an interview?

I know it is hard to hear, but really I would not fret about interviews this early 😀
The bulk of interviews don't start until probably August, and they continue until January (maybe later)
Also, the pulling is not heavily dependent on time if you are closer to the average or a non-traditional student
[Warning: Anecdote] I have seen some people interview in December and January and be accepted within a few weeks, while others interviewed in
September and were pulled off the waitlist in July[/anecdote]

Just hold fast and focus on other things, and soon enough, you'll get a call!

It is not necessary for the application, but it helps out since it shows you have experience with a DO physician

So UNT will have a DO AND and MD program? or will it replace the DO school?
I imagine that there will be a MD and DO program since the goal of the Texas medical schools is to increase production of Texan physicians. It will probably operate similarly to MSU, but that's just my guess.

I made some inquiries about this, and the only surprise seems to be in the timing. More details are supposed to come out next week, but it's fair to assume that they, meaning TCU and UNT, will do everything they can to avoid any perception that they want to destroy TCOM, which is a very well established institution in Texas, compared to TCU which has zero experience in either health care or medical education. Furthermore, TCOM is an official state school with a public mission to fulfill, and as such, state students are always guaranteed rotation spots. This question came up last time and that was the assurance given to peope who were opposed to the MD school. But who knows. I know that TCOM alumni, many of whom live in the DFW area, are very protective of TCOM students. They were quite vocal last time and I'm sure they'll be asking some hard questions...

Interesting plan - details unknown. It's no secret that Dr. Williams was hired to rig up an MD school in Fort Worth, which his predecessor couldn't do (see one big reason below). I'm okay with TCU - being a private school - doing whatever they want with their money as long as there are no negative effects on TCOM. There are successful precedents for DO and MD schools under the same umbrella, e.g. in Michigan and New Jersey.

Keep in mind Dr. Williams is a TCOM graduate, and he's fully aware of what happened last time. As far as rotations, they can create additional slots in Fort Worth hospitals - in fact, FW was an area looked at by Caribbean schools before they got banned from Texas.

It'll be interesting to see how they're going to name this school, and whether it's going to be part of TMDSAS. (I hope this will be the last new med school in Texas - you don't want to be in the same situation as lawyers. I just saw that there is now a newly accredited for-profit MD school in California owned and operated by a pharmacist/investor. WTF?)

Below is the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association's 2015 Legislative Priorities
ACCESS TO CARE
Increase funding and expand Graduate Medical Education.
Protect the integrity of Texas Osteopathic Medical education by opposing any effort to change existing law which prohibits UNTHSC-TCOM from awarding a MD degree.

Interview questions will depend on who you interview with obviously. However, for TCOM be prepared to answer why DO. Also it's a good idea to understand the philosophical differences between MD and DO. I had one that asked me what was different about DOs and what exactly OMM was and to give an example.

I wouldn't say they have zero experience in health care of medical education. They have a nursing program. If you meant experience with MD/DO programs, yes.

Congrats to all who have been invited for interviews! I would use the SDN interview feedback as a useful resource for interview questions and as @LChristmas mentioned google is also a good resource. I remember there was two separate 1 on 1 interviews. The first one was a closed book interview, I remember feeling like I was getting grilled during this one. Be able to talk about all of your weaknesses and just know your drives and aspirations. The second interview is a semi open book interview, they can see everything but your stats. This interview was much more relaxed and conversational. Good luck!
