Thanks for the info! I actually do have a couple more questions... How does the path tracking system work at WSU? Are there 3 tracks or does everyone go general and then take electives for their own preferences? Also I know WSU has a ton of doctors who are board certified in a variety of specialties. Do you think that having those doctors on campus is helpful for students who might want to specialize? I have been thinking about specializing in dentistry or radiology and some schools I got into don’t have specialists in those fields. I know you can always do externships but I was wondering if having them right there gives you any advantage. Sorry for the long post!
We don’t track. First three years we all have the same core cirriculum. First and second year our elective options are during lunch, and generally more like a seminar lecture once a week. Third year we have only fourish core classes each semester, and then have electives that are more like regular classes (behavior, small animal nutrition, Exotics, etc). But electives are not required if you don’t want to take any, aside from a “practicum” required to complete our ethics courses.
Fourth year we also all have the same core rotations (I think only like 20 weeks of them though? We have 44 weeks of required rotations) and then have electives we choose from from based on our interests. Fourth year we also have a few mandatory externship type things outside the school (some at only certain approved locations, others you set up on your own based on their requirements—again, you choose based on your interests). We also have four vacation blocks (8 weeks total) you can use for more externships if you want.
We do have a few boarded radiologists and a dentistry department, and an option to take rotations with them. We’re also required to shadow in the hospital a few hours every semester, but you can go hang out in whatever department you’re interested in whenever you want for the most part. Clinicians and fourth students have always been happy to explain what they’re doing and let you observe in my experience.
Honestly I feel like while some schools may make getting certain opportunities easier (like doing a rotation in house instead of setting up an externship), if you’re interested in something and willing to work to get those experiences, you will. Total COA of the different schools should really be your deciding factor, cause that extra debt really won’t be worth it.
Hi! Yes I am WICHE but I was actually admitted early-admit (whatever that means) so I didn’t have to interview. I’m not sure if all WICHE people were put under that same category but I found out in December. When is everyone else hoping to hear by??
Only WICHE is “early admit”
🙂 some WICHE receive conditional offers if they end up with WICHE funding, and are offered the chance to also interview with the general OOS pool as well. Others just are accepted as WICHE. Generally these are the students that are most likely to receive funding. Congrats! IS and OOS should hear by mid-Feb.
