Just got the alternate list email...pretty devastating, and now I have no desire to be at work today. FYI, I got that "correspondence has been sent" status change a couple of days before the email.

Do you guys think there will be a lot of movement this year? I guess I'll just ride it out and beat the dead horse until it comes back alive.

I bet there will be a lot of movement this year, because of the LCME probation, unless they pre-empt this by sending out more initial acceptances.

This new email is strange, i haven't seen it in the previous years threads. I think it may be a good sign. Why would GW needlessly pull along applicants with false hope? They have absolutely no obligation considering the sheer volume of applications they receive.

Just so everyone knows, I applied to GW last year and was put on pre-interview hold and eventually got the letter saying I was in the backup interview pool. As you can see, nothing came of that.

So this letter is not new this year. I think they do this because they get sooooo many applications and are considered back up by some. They want to have a buffer in case they don't fill the class. Personally, I think it is pointless, especially considering how many people they waitlist.

Anyways, best of luck to you guys!

A lot of you fellow alternates would make great classmates!! ...hinthintGW...

i know right?

Hey singularity, hang in there buddy. I know exactly how you feel... i felt like crawling under a rock and hibernating for 9 months. But don't worry... it wears off. Just takes a little time.

Lol, time apparently isn't on my side with GW.

Thanks for the support though. Best of luck to you!

WHOA! Alot has happened since I last checked in here. Glad to see you are still going strong Bahadur.

Has anybody who interviewed post-Jan 8th heard any news from GW?

yeah, i inteviewed on feb 12 and they emailed me this past monday... i almost threw up my heart.

anyways, they were asking for 1) a letter of "good standing" from my graduate program and 2) a summary of my institutional action from my college (underage drinking during 2nd year and violation of campus housing policies :bang: )

that's it

and while we're on the subject.... what do you guys think of them asking for 2). i hope this doesn't come back and kick me in the ass

i don't think it will be too big of a deal.. just explain the situation and what you learned from it

Any of you who are considering GW, don't do it! The school has numerous issues, I have many friends who are going there and they are all very unhappy. Just ask a current student about their "ICM" course and you will see how upset they are. They are on probation because of their poor teaching, not their "lack of lounge space"

I am withdrawing my app, post-interview, pre-decision. It just wasn't a good fit for me, especially considering the cost of the school and living in DC. I do love DC though, and the hospital looked fantastic. Good luck everyone!

Are there any current GW students out there who can expand on the ICM course and poor teaching issue??

yeah, it seems like quite a bold statement, but i would like to hear some student feedback also. i know there were some issues, but didn't know it was supposedly that seriously.

I don't want to give anyone false hope but my brother who went there was one who got an interview after they told him their interview cycle was over. He interviewed late April. While he did apply like two decades ago, seems it does happen. Not sure if part of that's how they did it then though as he was by himself, and it was not at GWU but the city where we lived.

My main point is don't just stop checking your email or withdraw your application because you're hurt if you're interested in going to this school or any school for that matter. One thing I learned from applying (besides not waiting till dec/jan to send secondaries) is not to take who they extend interviews to personally.

"The Committee on Admissions is pleased to inform you that you have been selected as an alternate for the first year class of the program leading to the Doctor of Medicine degree entering in August 2009. A final decision has yet to be made regarding an acceptance. [. . . ]"

Still waiting on Vermont and Tufts, but it's a start...

Of course the problems are serious. Just do a google search and you will see numerous articles writen about GW on probation. Remember that GW is the ONLY medical school that is on probation in Canada and United States. Just think about that.

The school is just fine. Your attempt to get people to open up some more spots so you can get off the waitlist is pretty transparent.

Anyone heard of any acceptances lately? Interviewed late Feb/early march and curious to know if anyone has been accepted from the late jan/feb interview batch.

Also, are school required to inform us of a waitlist/rejection/acceptance by may 15? Or would that be solely a courtesy?

I am just trying to help. You are entitled to your opinion. Everyone out there is free to look into issues related to the school on their own. There are good and bad things about every school. But the fact of the matter is that GW is the only school on probation and they have not released the true reasons behind their probationary status.

I am willing to believe this. When I interviewed there, I asked the dean and my interviewers about this issue, and found their answers to be coy and evasive. Personally, I find it pretty naive to assume that a medical school, especially a for profit school like GW, would be placed on probation status solely for just not having enough "lounge space".

This probation press is pretty nasty. There is a lot of conjecture and impartial evidence floating around these threads and believe that it may be doing more harm than good. I am also concerned about the probationary status but I decided to interview here anyway. Coincidently, Dean Scott was the first to talk to us and the first thing he discussed was the probationary status. Personally, I was impressed by his candor and honesty regarding such a negative mark on his watch.

From what he said, it sounds like GWU has really reached out to its student body to correct some of these problems. After all, they have already invested so much - there should be no doubt that both the faculty and the students are doing everything they can to rescue this schools faltering reputation. Additional administrative staff have also been hired to deal specifically with curriculum tracking and management.

Now, I know that many of you still have your doubts, I still have my own. However, without GWU students, residents, and faculty members posting on this forum, we are not going to get any closer to the reality of the situation. I recommend patience to those like myself who have already interviewed. Do not make rash decisions based upon the idiosyncratic remarks of third parties, formulate you own opinions with research. This probation thing could even be resolved before the first week of classes and those of us who had risked academic marginalization will laugh over beers at the nearest irish pub.

I think the biggest problem here is that the LCME's findings are never made public, so we have no way of knowing what the real issues are. This is ridiculous, considering how much time and money students invest in their medical education.

If a restaurant fails its health inspection, we can go online and read what their violations were, but we can't find out the same things about a place where we may be spending 4 years and $200,000 of our own money. All we learn is what the school chooses to disclose, because the LCME doesn't even issue its own press release on the matter.

This whole system is way too cozy and sheltered from public scrutiny. I think it's way past time for change.

I haven't posted here in awhile, but thought I would add to this discussion...

I interviewed with one of the people who is responsible for dealing specifically with the probation issue. He said the main problem was the curriculum - lack of cohesiveness between subjects, lack of communication between professors, and in general the curriculum deemed not up to par in terms of preclinical training. He didn't try to B.S. that it was all about lounge space, but he definitely said there is a lot to be done.

I guess my point is this. I went to GW thinking it was my top choice - overall, I felt the students there to be there because "this was the best school that accepted me." The public health opportunities are amazing, no doubt, but I would never pay the second highest med school tuition in the country for a curriculum that leaves much to be desired.

Edit: just thought I'd add - I withdrew from the waitlist the day after I was placed on it, so I REALLY have no stake in this. This isn't a plea so I can get a spot.

I received an email today stating that I've been accepted! My alma mater gave me some love! BTW I interviewed 1/22...

you know i always wonder some people get an acceptance within a month. others 8 weeks. does anyone know why?

Who got acceptances from here within a month? I think they probably interviewed very early. After December they got really backed up what with being the only hospital for Inauguration and everything so they've been pretty consistent with 8 weeks since then. Thats what they told us at interviews March 3.

no way, you serious with the back up due to inauguration? 🙂

Hey, has anyone received something like this? Seems positive.🙄

GW is not a for-profit school. There is a massive controversy right now in the medical education world over the significance of the first for-profit medical school on US soil, and that's RVU osteopathic in Colorado. All the others are in the Caribbean.

I've got a med school acceptance in hand. I have no vested interest in this argument. I just found your arrogance in spite of your ignorance annoying.

As a current student, I feel like I need to chime in here.

I don't know who you talked to, but the only curriculum type of problems that have been brought up to the students (in our multiple meetings with the deans) were:

1. The wording of course objectives
2. Oversight from the Dean's office. Monitoring student hours, etc.

The objectives have been fixed (or so the deans say) and believe me, they're monitoring our hours very closely now. Like daily. So that will definitely be in compliance too.

Also of note, GW's board scores have consistently been above the national mean. Only slightly above for the past few years, granted, but we're still certainly learning medicine just fine at GW and the LCME specifically commented that residency programs reported GW's graduates did well in their programs. I know that it is annoying that the report isn't public, but apparently this is an LCME rule, not GW's.

As for the ICM course...yeah, it wasn't the most organized, but they are working on that too. Our class filled our surveys for every lecture given. Some were very good, others not so good. I think the biggest difference with this course versus the others is that it's all clinicians lecturing since it's not a basic science class, and there's definitely varying levels of teaching ability among clinicians, as I'm sure everyone knows. FYI, ICM = Intro to Clinical Medicine and is sort of a transition class between the basic science years and the clinical years, and is taken in the second half of second year. It also helps go over some of the management principles tested on the boards. Anyways, as far as I know, this particular class had nothing to do with the probation at all.

InquisitiveOne- yeah I received a similar email. I really hope that it is positive. Good luck and hopefully we hear good news soon.

i did, but not asking for those things. i posted it a bit earlier (check a few posts above). but yeah, i'm hoping it sounds promising too

Hey everybody. Does anyone remember the tour guide's name? I stupidly forgot to write it down. I think it was Emily but I'm not sure. She said she was a masters student who worked full time for the admissions office. She ran the interview day, very nice, young...
Thanks.

got wait listed this morning =(

Hey man, hang in there. I know it's hard when you receive anything but an acceptance but your app looks amazing and i'm sure someone somewhere will finally realize that.

Are you serious? While I mis-categorized the school with its hospital, how was I arrogant? For assuming there were possible other reasons for its probation status besides “lounge space”? Im sorry for not being the typical sheep that accepts everything that I am told. Bahhh

Waitlisted today. This was not the news I was hoping for. I guess I have a lot of company, though--it seems pretty much everyone is getting waitlisted lately.

Boo! There is still hope though. Even if the waiting sucks, haha. Anyways welcome to the club =)

Don't worry, May 15th is really creeping up on us.

Welcome to you as well, eyang22286. Just curious, did you ever end up responding to their request for an explaination of that academic action?

haha of course i did! just had an adviser write up an explanation for it. she was relaly nice about it so i doubt there was anything in there purposefully incriminating. would have been funny if i just ignored that request though.

I could not agree more. This is probably the hardest thing about this entire process... I just wish we could have that peace and comfort of mind so we can enjoy the last few months/weeks/moments left before selling our souls for the next 4+ years/forever.

Oh well. Technically, the only thing that is preventing us from living in the present and enjoying whatever we have is our mindset. I think? Ew positivity is not as much fun as negativity hahaha .

you know... that's very true haha. the only thing preventing us from doing whatever we'd be doing post-acceptance is that mindset. well, technically we still can do whatever it is, we just wouldn't enjoy it as much, or at all actually haha
