Regarding reference letters, here's what I heard from the admissions office:

Q: My school has a Career Center letter service that sends out a packet with all of our letters. I was planning to send more than two letters in this packet. Should I list only 2 of these letters in the Supplemental application, and then just send the rest of the letters in the same packet without listing them anywhere?

A: You may actually list that the letters are going to be sent by the Career Center without the individual names of your recommenders.

So is this contradictory to what you heard from them, shemarty? I guess to stay on the safe side I could send a list w/ the supplemental app anyway...

Here is the e-mail I got from them today:
List the name of your college and on the other line, write "Career Center." We will know what it means.

I think the conclusion is the following:
If you're sending a packet. List "CAREER CENTER" or "PACKET" on the "advisor name" slot.

DON'T list the individual names of the LOR writers (the 2 slots they give you online, leave them blank).

Then, SEND a list of the names and titles and departments of your LOR writers as a supplementary document when you send the paper version of the Hopkins secondary.

That's what I'm going to do. Aaah, this has been so confusing.

So "no tabs or hard returns" basically means one big paragraph right?

Yes, it means one big paragraph.

i spoke with one of the assistant deans at hopkins med and she said that many people do in fact leave the "if applicable" essay empty so i guess odn't feel too bad if you do so because lots of people do... idk

Ooh, okay. And it doesn't really count against you to leave it empty, because they truly view it as optional? That's nice to know...

Yea, I'm leaning towards leaving it empty, but I haven't entirely decided yet.

I have a green card, so I have an Alien# and no longer have a valid visa #, so should I list my A# and send in copy of my green card?

I averaged, so if it was one saturday a month for 4 hrs I put 1 hr a week, this led to funny things with like .5 hrs a week (because of summer and whatnot), but whatever.

Is the hours/week thing understood because I just entered numbers like 5 or 10 which would be bad if they interpret as my entire involvement.

It is understood as hours/week.

I'm still not convinced about averaging out the hours per week over the entire year. Lets say I volunteered in another country at a clinic for my winter break, should I put down hours per week I worked while I was there (i.e. 40), or average it out for the whole year (i.e <1)?

As of now I have asterisks by the numbers for situations like these, and if I get an interview, I can explain it then. Please tell me if this is a bad idea.

It is the average hours per week for the duration of the activity - if that was 40 hours per week for one week or how ever many weeks you did it, then put that...you are not expected to stretch it out over a year...

So what makes JHU so special that it warrants its own secondary thread?

So what makes JHU so special that it warrants its own secondary thread?

Shemarty created threads for each of the schools with secondaries out so that people can talk about the different requirements of the schools. It's not a specialness thing...

You can choose not to use this thread. It's up to you... I find it easier to have specific threads rather than one huge thread to sort through.

i hate tools.

do you guys know how responsive the admissions office is to emails?

They've been pretty helpful in replying to the questions I've e-mailed them over the last couple weeks. But I bet they're getting increasingly busy as the application cycle picks up, so I wouldn't be surprised if they took a few days to get back to you.

lol I love how their responses are so general 😀

This is by far the worst secondary. Even Duke's and Pritzker's are better.

I'm trying to think whether the moral/ethical dilemma question would fit in the "overcoming diversity" section.

Also for the "Which area of medicine interests you" question:
How are we even supposed to know? Most of us have shadowed doctors and that's it. What kinda of a question is this? Every specialty seems interesting at this point.. and I'm sure my mind will change. I know I'm interested in academic medicine (mainly teaching). Is this enough?

Definitely put down your interest in academic medicine. That's some thing that top schools like a lot.
As for the type of medicine I mentioned I liked what I focused on was more the philosophy behind a type of medicine rather than the actual practice of medicine. That way it reflected what my goals are as a physician and that I am not dead set upon a certain specialty but am driven by a certain philosophy.

Should I wait for an email invite from Hopkins? Or can I simply go to their website and fill out the secondary application?

I haven't gotten a secondary invite, and I have already submitted mine. Go ahead and start, they wouldn't have had it out beforehand if you weren't allowed to.

Just fill it out... you will be fine submitting before you get the invite.

i stumbled across this thread and just wanted to wish u guys good luck!

When they ask for undergraduate GPAs, should I put them as they are calculated by my undergrad institution, or as AMCAS calculates them?

Does Hopkins require us to send in a photo with the hard copy of our secondary?

As AMCAS calculates them would be the safest way to go.

Does Hopkins require us to send in a photo with the hard copy of our secondary?

Yes they do. The box is ~2x2.

Shemarty - why do you have two dates for app. copy sent?

I wanted to mail it out on 7/3, but couldn't get to the post office in time 😳. So I actually mailed it off this afternoon.

Come to think of it, I should've just edited my last post instead of making a new one since I was the latest poster. Oops... 🙁

We will begin screening the applications for scheduling interviews in August. We will begin interviews at the end of the second week of September.

Yikes! 😱 I'm nervous!

Does Hopkins screen the primaries?
I still haven't received the secondary yet, even though I submitted my primary back in June. Maybe I got a GPA cut

Yeah JHU seems to always have "out there" essay questions. I remember when I applied there for undergrad they had a question, "What would you do if you had 10 dollars to spend?"

Hm... what should I do if I haven't received this secondary yet? Anybody in the same boat?
