Hmm, Lauren you mailed it in on 6/25. Vadd you mailed it in on 7/2.
(A pretty big range)

It seems like today was the first day they decided to sort through their mail and notify applicants that the paper copy has received?

I sent mine on 7/7, so maybe they'll get it in the next 2 business days...

Lauren and Vadd, did Hopkins receive your LORs yet?

I don't know about my LORs... I figure I should wait until Monday to call them, since they already communicated with me once today.

My LORs should be at ALL of my schools since they are Virtual Evals, but so far only U Chicago, U Penn and TMDSAS report them as recieved (this included a call to Wash U this morning to ask them why they aren't there and they said wait another week and call again).

Mmkay. Mind were snail-mailed out on Tuesday, so I guess I should expect them to arrive next week...

I work at the hospital, so I walked mine over and handed in to them in person on 7/2 and I juse received their email today.

Also the woman in admissions at Hopkins yelled at me for bringing it over in person and told me that I am not to come back to the office to ask "a million questions" about the status of my application - I need to call like everyone else. This was the first time that I had ever been to the admissions office. I just wanted to assure that my app. did not get lost in the mail and save money on postage, and now I have a really bad taste in my mouth. Stupid people 👎

I got an email today as well saying they got it. But my dumb school won't send out my LORs until another week or two, so I'm still going to have to wait.

Did anyone receive in the mail today a Hopkins viewbook with a 2-page letter included on nice stationary asking them to fill out the secondary? It says they received my AMCAS......idk if this is what everyone else got or what?

It's a nice viewbook....

Yeah I got one - I think they're probably sent to everyone.

🙁 I mailed the paper copy of my secondary to Hopkins around the same time that I mailed my LORs to a bunch of other schools. UPenn and WashU got my letters, but still no peep from JHU. (or from AMCAS re:my letters. But I guess that's to be expected...)

So for the educational background section, are you putting every school you took classes from? Or just the ones from which you got a degree?

On a similar note, would you GPA be the one for the school you got your degree from or your AMCAS GPA? Seems kind of pointless to ask for that again.

No one has received my letters yet 🙁

What did you guys put for your start/stop dates for interests that you plan on pursuing your whole lives? I hate that it makes you put in MM/YYYY. Right now my stop date for music and alpine activities are 07/2065 because I plan on dying right around then. I'm tempted to just submit it like that. What do you think?

Lol I did the same thing for Columbia... for my legal address I put down like 2060 or 2080.. I don't remember lol

 You really did? I really want to submit it like that, but I'm nervous that the boys and girls on the Hopkins adcom are a bit too uptight for that.

Also, I'm waiting for my MCAT scores. Is it alright to submit the application with those slots blank? I'm assuming they're automatically notified when the scores come in.

Any thoughts?
I would put everywhere you took classes from. Yes, I think they're basically asking AMCAS GPA. Really, most secondaries are mostly asking for AMCAS info again. It's just how it goes.

Hey guys,
when you print out the hard copy to sent to adcom, does it say "Applicant Copy" across every page? Is that the right copy to send?

Yeah, I read somewhere in the instructions that that's how it's supposed to look.

Anyone with thoughts on my question?

I would assume its ok to submit with MCAT scores blank. You should call the school's admissions office to confirm, since they'll know the answer for sure.

I'm sorry that happened to you--I did everything in person too. Everyone I've met has been really sweet. There's definitely something to be said for avoiding the mail and now they have a face to put with your name when you call 🙂

Yea, I've heard a lot of people say things like that. I'd give you the usual tripe of "they're really overworked, they probably had a rough day, etc.," which is certainly true to an extent, but there's still no need to be rude. Just please remember that a few administrative assistants in one office don't necessarily reflect on an entire institution (though they obviously are representing us, we should probably hire a few more people to help out with admissions just to make it more applicant-friendly).

Anyone else receive any notification about Hopkins receiving their paper copy / LORs?

Still waiting... 🙁

Shemarty don't worry. I haven't really gotten anything concrete the only email I got was from July 11th. My letters were sent via Virtual Evals 6/30 and Wash U claims to not have them yet, which I know isn't true.

I'm just going to wait, or call them Monday if nothing is figured out.

"We have received your secondary application. If you have not yet sent letters of recommendation, please note they are due by December 1. You will be notified if any items are needed to complete your application. We will send an e-mail when your application is complete and ready for review by the Committee on Admission.

Thank you.

Hi shemarty, I mailed my secondary on July 10 and haven't heard anything yet (no email to say it has arrived, or confirm that my LOEs have arrived). I did get the nice prospective booklet last week. I will post if I hear anything.
Best of luck.

What do you guys consider the difference between volunteer activities and extracurricular activites? It seems like a bit of a gray area. I volunteered to do a research, so is that under volunteer activities? I was involved in professional engineering organizations - is that volunteering or EC? Thanks!

I've never heard from Hopkins at all (including invitation to secondary)...I started filling out their secondary before I was verified, though.

Did you guys get e-mails telling you to fill out the secondary?

*sigh* this is the second school I'll have to contact...

Nope, I never received an email from them; just a letter in the mail sent with their viewbook.

I tend to think community service, unpaid clinical activities are more volunteering, and research and clubs and orgs more EC.

same here as blueskyline

Thanks blueskyline and bobdogsam. Maybe I'll just verify my address with JHU. I've been verified for almost two weeks and I'm in Florida...

Thanks again, guys.

I got the viewbook in the mail, so they received my AMCAS...

On 7/7, I snail-mailed them my paper application and photograph, as well as my LORs. I haven't received any email notifications about whether or not they've actually received these.

I just tried calling, but pressing 0 still gave me voicemail. Their call in hours are 2-4pm EST.

Anybody else in my same boat want to give it a shot and call them later today?

*frustrated*

Hello Everyone,

Does anyone know for certain how much detail we're expected to provide in the Awards List? Since we're not allowed to use tabs or hard returns, it seems like it would be hard to describe the award in more detail than just it's name. Any thoughts?

Hi all,

Those of you applying to JHU MSTP, are we supposed to send all LORs, our pic, and our application fee to the MSTP office?

Do we send anything to the med school admissions office?

Thanks!

You can send it to either the MSTP or med school admissions office, who will forward it to the MSTP. Sending it to MSTP will expedite the process, the med school has little to do with MD-PhD admissions.

http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/mdphd/Admissions/Howtoapply.html

I'll also add that address to the contact page cause it's a bit hard to find. If you want to know whether it has been received, contact Sharon Welling (info on the contact us page) rather than the medical school admissions office.

I was brief, name, dates, time commitment, and a sentence or so focusing on what the club/project/award was and what I did in it/why I got it. Anything you really want to highlight you have to mention in your essays or talk about in your interviews, your awards list will be skimmed.

They finally got my secondary!

I mailed my Hopkins secondary app on July 10
I received an email today (July 24) saying that it has arrived.
No word yet regarding the LOEs.

I sent mine around that time too...maybe they went through a bunch of secondaries and haven't yet gotten to all the LORs they have lying around?

We are already processing more than 2,000 applications. When we have completed processing all of your supplemental information, you too will receive notice that your application is complete.

Please, do not allow yourself to compare what you receive to what someone you know has received. We will not be able to "jump" to see what the differences are between you. Much of what goes out from all of the medical schools is "routine" and "form-letter" type information. Processing materials and reviewing applications take time and each applicant is processed individually.

Please trust us to let you know, in a timely fashion, if we are missing any part of your application, giving you a reasonable amount of time to get the information in to the Admissions Committee.

When we are able to confirm that your application is complete, we will notify you to that effect, as well. Processing the number of applications we anticipate receiving this year, like anything done well, takes time.

We appreciate your interest in our medical school and hope that you will contact us if you should have additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Hermione M. Hicks, M.P.A.
Assistant for Admissions

I haven't received Hopkins secondary. Do I need to wait for them to give me the website or can I just get it started?

Hi All,
I've been a long time lurker on SDN and will be starting my frist year at Hopkins in a few weeks. Now that my app cycle is over, I thought i'd come out of the shadows and see if I can be at all helpful to those of you currently applying. While I probably can't be of too much help at this point, I have been through the cycle (and filled out a very similar secondary) and as I get acclimated I'd love to answer any questions I can.
I know the Hopkins admissions office isn't the most friendly when you call, but I wanted to say, please don't judge the school by that! All my experiences with current students (and with Dean Hicks) have been wonderful and I'm very excited to start in the fall.
Good luck all!
