hey all, accepted to stony and its deff one of my top choices... LOVE the cheapness 😀

so i got the housing stuff and reading some on this thread it seems the concensus is off campus housing, however...

1) wat is the actuall price difference between off and on?

2) how much further is off campus housing than on campus?

3) is there any forum which posts avalible housing off campus?

4) is there any way to choose housmates off campus in ragards to life styles-- for example: smokers/nonsmoker, dietary (im kosher), how anal ppl are/relaxed (im way too relaxed) ect.

Congratz all who have been accepted!! stony brook is seriously a great bang for the buck 👍👍

It seems that acceptance notice comes withint 4 week period while waitlist and rejection are slower.

Not necessarily. I interviewed on 10/16 and was accepted on 12/23, a little under 10 weeks. There is no rhyme or reason to this process so don't get worried if you haven't heard back from them after 4 weeks.

ya i interviewed 9/12 and accepted 10/30, about 6 weeks. some took 10 weeks and some under 2 weeks. so the time post interview is not indicative of the decision on your application.

Congrats, I: 9/19 called today and still under review LOL.

a friend of mine interviewed on 9/26 and just got a waitlist last week. they really seem to be taking their time this year.

Interviewed in sept, finally rejected on friday. 🙁 I wish it didn't take them 5 months to tell me to piss off. Although their rejection letter was probably the nicest I have ever seen and will ever receive.

Taking five months to get back to you after an interview is just a piss poor way of doing things. Yeah we get that we're premeds, scum of the earth, bottom of the totum pole, sewer rat servents, but come on we should get a little more ****ing courtesy than that.

it seems, at least with SB, that if they really liked you they make a relatively quick decision and if they stall it may be that they have some doubts, either about you as a candidate or your desire to go to SB. At the same time though things pile up as the interview season progresses so wait times get longer....of many of the schools though it seems that SB is very efficient.

anybody wrote letter of interest post-interview and got quicker and/or positive response (acceptance)?

i wrote a letter of intent to stony brook immediately following my interview and was accepted, although i was notified 10 weeks later

wrote a combined update and letter of intent that i sent out after my interview and was accepted within a month (that included the christmas and new year holidays)

I didn't do anything after my interview (9/18) and was accepted 10/31. so i guess the result varies. I'm sure a LOI can't hurt.

Hi Kachin13 and Dreamdoc2b... I was wondering if you were asked about your MCATs and grades during your interview? Do you mind telling some of your interview questions???

I don't really remember the questions but I did get asked about my mcat and certain questionable grades. But most of the interview was spent on the tell me about yourself question....oh and why do you want to be a doctor.......random ethical questions too.....
To defend the weak grades I tried to convince them that I was capable of handling the rigors of a medical curriculum

No I wasn't asked anything about my stats although he was looking at my AMCAS app right infront of me. My interviewer was very interested in my background and the pre-med experiences I had. He also asked questions i think to see if i was mentally ready and had the motivation to handle medical school..probably because my stats arent so great. Very relaxed interview.

Thanks kachin.... thats what i thought also... i think if they interview you, then they like you, just wanna make sure you can handle it right ?.....

Interviewed in the middle of January, got an overnight UPS acceptance package on Friday plus a friendly e-mail from one of my interviewers. Although this is not my first acceptance, still exciting!!!!😍

I interviewed in late January - just hit 1 month mark. I am thinking about writing a letter of interest but it seems too late. Any thoughts? Should I wait a bit for the decision? SB is my first choice!

if SB really is your first choice (over harvard) you should've already sent them a letter telling them that...or better yet if it is really your first choice you should send a letter of intent

yea. I stayed with students the night before and they reassured me that the school wanted to make sure that you were sane and would be a good fit for the school.

So aside from sending fall semester grades and a LOI with them, is there anything else that one can do to express interest/get an interview? I guess this doesn't really apply to Stony specifically but to any school.

it's march...if you haven't gotten an interview invite from a school yet i think you might as well write that school off as a lost cause....not sure about SB specifically though

YEah I know its a real long shot. Still, if thats true why can't they (and the other eight schools I haven't heard anything from) just reject me already?

I'm probably going to have a single day soon where I get eight rejections at once. That moment will most likely be followed by excessive alcohol abuse.

As much as I would like to believe otherwise, unresponsive schools are probably too busy to dig into th majority of rejected app and send them an email. They will probably do it when they are done sending out acceptance letters. After all, acceptees are their first priority. I know it's brutal but everyone goes through it in one way or another.

Does anyone know how many people usually come off the waitlist? Does it vary a lot year to year?

Thanks

I think that's pretty inexcusable. Send a form email or letter, it's not that hard.

I think I remember them telling me during my interview that it was usually somewhere around 25%. I don't know how many people this translates to or if, because of our current economic situation, there may be more people choosing state over private and the percentage might be lower this year.

When I interviewed in early march, they told me to expect to hear back in 4-6 weeks. Have people found their estimates of when you hear back to be accurate?

Has anyone got decision lately? It's been over six weeks since my interview. No word yet..

I heard a little after the time frame they told me, and that was a while ago.

for those who interviewed in January, how long did the admissions say it would usually take to hear back during the interview session? I remember 4-8 weeks but wasn't sure (it's been a while since my last visit).

Just called in today, was notified a correspondence has just been sent
since this wk is the 6th week since I interviewed, expecting the worst...🙁

I think they told us that acceptances are sent by overnight mail, waitlists are sent by email and rejection are sent by snail mail. Hopefully you will get a thick envelope tomorrow 🙂

Thanks Jericho, I'm hoping for the same thing but it's more likely the bad news since this person (who interviewed last yr) from my school got his acceptance in 3 weeks via snail mail. Mine seems too long to be an acceptance :scared:

don't worry. i was accepted roughly ten weeks after i interviewed. it's very possible you will get an acceptance letter (today if sent yesterday). good luck.

random note, hope this helps

i interviewed in december, was waitlisted in january, and accepted in mid june...they continued taking ppl off the waitlist up through august, and id say about a quarter to a third of my class (2011) was off the waitlist.

at this point it couldnt hurt to write the admissions office a letter reaffirming your interest in the school with updates on what you've accomplished this past year, if applicable. if stony is your top choice and youve been accepted elsewhere then def let stony know that youd be willing to forego those other spots to come here.

Gluck guys =)

It's friday and still not a beep from stony 🙁. Called in again, and was asked to call back on Mon if I get nothing by tomorrow. I wish they'd just tell me over phone that it's a rejection already 😡!

just got my rejection in the mail today 🙁... farewell stony brook
