Hey, I'm an OOS applicant from Kansas. I interviewed on 10/1 and got accepted today. I really liked my interview and visit and am fairly sure that I'll end up going to Iowa. I was just wondering if anyone was going to create a class of 2013 thread or facebook group to get to know each other, share info, and look for roommates.

Ugh, October 1st...

10 week wait?

It's killed me waiting 3... I really want to go there.

to anyone who interviewed dec. 17, thanks. i had a great time with you all, especially the ladies 🙂 i hope you guys had a great time, hopefully we will all be fortunate enough to enter class together, you'd all make great classmates.

cheers!

So I've heard that there is a small batch of students who are screened AFTER 12/15/08 and notified of their interview some time after this date. This is for people who didn't meet the MCAT distribution requirements or something like that. Has anyone been notified of an interview like that yet? (Or any time after 12/16)?

are there any rules against soliciting on these threads? specifically in regards to housing. I have a lease that is 5 minutes from the Carver and MERF and want to get out two months early in June. Should I try and do it through a facebook group that somebody starts?

:eyebrow: soliciting is usually against the rules. However, this site has a sub-forum dedicated to that

Does anyone know if there is a second look weekend at Iowa? It doesnt look like it. Any opportunities to get to know the school better before we have to choose where we go?

It would be nice if they did.. I definetly want a second look at any school before I make a final decision.

Looks like they do. Previous years it has been in April. Source: Know med students who attended last year.

do they pay for travel, do you know?
Not as far as I know. I never really thought about it considering I work a couple floors above the admissions office. I believe I saw a thread on here once that detailed which schools do/don't... I believe Iowa is in the no-pay category...

Hey Chubby, between Iowa and Dartmouth, which school did you like more, if you don't mind my asking? Could you compare the two? I'm still trying to decide whether to go on my interview to Iowa and any info you could give would really help.
Iowa hands down....although Dartmouth probably had a nicer hospital.....you can pm if you want more.

All the people from this day, Dec 17, were very nice. I hope we will see each other in the Fall.

Some schools pay for a second visit? I need to find this list!

Yes, although very few. I believe Hopkins does, and I know Vandy does. On the thread that I can now not seem to find, I also saw a few that pay for URMs only. Sorry I can't find it now, I ran across it while searching for something completely unrelated.

I'm trying to plan my interview week but I am having trouble planning my trip out there. Does anyone know what the best way to get from NYC to Iowa city is? (CID, Moline Quad International, ??)

I would fly into Cedar Rapids and either 1) get the shuttle to take you to Iowa City or 2) rent a car and drive to Iowa City as it's only 25 minutes away. I go to school in Iowa City and the Cedar Rapids airport is really easy to get to so that's my suggestion.

For those who interviewed, did you find the day ended around 5 or did you find that it was done before then?

It ended well before 5, but I don't remember when... my interview was in september

Yes I was out of the parking garage around 2pm - i remember because there was some type of time on the parking receipt I rec'd, pretty much everyone split up right after the final session ended.

For the person flying in from NYC, I'd take a look at the other airports around -- weather may stink at the moment, but depending on your finances it may make sense to fly in to another airport within commuting distance; if you can fly into Chicago for $250 versus cedar rapids for $1,000, it may make sense to take the 4 or so hour drive from Chicago versus the shuttle/25 minute drive from Cedar Rapids airport. To check rates to different cities, orbitz.com or yahoo travel have pretty good info.

I would suggest mli (moline/quad cities), much better prices, saved 150 dollars on my last trip.

I was complete 9/29, though it took a while for my last letter writer to get his act together. Can anyone who's had an interview invite or outright decline let me know when you were complete and when you got your notice. Hate to lose hope....
Does anyone know when Iowa fills it's class and when they stop interviewing?

Completed secondary during second week of Nov (late, apparently). Interview invite two days later. I think they interview until February. No worries.

MLI seems like the cheapest to fly into for me-- to anyone who did that how did you get from MLI to cedar rapids? Is there a bus/shuttle or did you get a rental car?

Is there lots of snow this time of year that would make it dangerous to get a rental car if you haven't driven in snow before? what were the associated costs.

Thanks in advance.

It takes about an hour to go from moline to iowa city via car. I think there is a greyhound bus station that is in davenport (taxi from airport). Otherwise, it does snow and/or ice storm often, and you need to be aware of the weather. However, you will be traveling on I-80, which is the first priority in road clearage. If you have never driven on snow before, just remember to drive slow, brake slow, turn slow...etc.

Hi everybody;

I am wondering when we will get info about our status. Also, I remember seeing a thread from last year with detailed dates of acceptances, waitlists and all that. This thread said something like " 2007-2008 Carver college of medicine". I have not been able to find it.

Happy new year to all

I have an interview on January 21st. Anyone else going to be there?

To those who have already gone, can you explain the CBL portion a little? What do they have you do?

I'm heading out from California, so I am sure it will be freezing. What did you men wear to the interview? I normally wear a suit or blazer with a tie. I guess I can just wear a heavy coat too?

cbl is like the pbl at other schools. its really easy and laid back. They present a patients case (history, background, symptoms) and everyone comes up with questions and ideas to explore about the patient. Just contribute ideas (you dont have to be right), dont talk over people and be polite.

Wear a heavy coat on your way into the medical school and take it off when you enter the building, just dont wear a coat that will leave anything on the suit.

Thanks, I was wondering about the day's activities as well.

I just got my acceptance yesterday via email!!!

Approximately a month after I interviewed (12/5). If you haven't heard back yet and you interviewed around the same time i did, don't worry you're probably in the final pool. I thought I was...They accept a lot of people around March 15. On my interview day I was told that they only fill about half of the seats for both OOS and IS during rolling admissions.

If I can get in, I'm sure you have what it takes too!

Good luck everyone!!!🙂

P.S. If you call the admissions office after you have interviewed, they won't give you information. They will be very polite, and tell you to wait and see.

Thanks, I was wondering about the day's activities as well.

small group of candidates - around 12 in my group, all met in a conf room.

we all heard the overview presentations - assistant dean, financial aid, etc. Next around 1/2 of the group did pbl, the other half did interviews in separate rooms. The latter half were kicked out of the pbl conf room and hung out in a nice open waiting area, got drinks and the like.

Next, the pbl group did interviews and vice versa.

after this, box lunch with volunteers/current med students, and a tour of the facility. tour was in small groups (mine I think had 3 students + one volunteer) I thought the whole thing was quite well done and reflected very well on the school.

After you guys scheduled your interview on the phone, did you get an email with all the details and a confirmation of the date?

I thought she said I would get an email, but i have received nothing. I scheduled it about 3 weeks ago.

Got a confirmation email by the end of the day I scheduled...

I forgot what the time table is for hearing back from UI... reading through this thread, it seems like it can vary from 3 weeks to 2 months to hear about an acceptance, and otherwise, you're headed to the final pool. Does that sound about right?

I think the turn around time is 3 weeks max. The admissions office is well staffed and super efficient. Every thing I had seen at Iowa was excellent. If I have to say anything I did not like about Iowa, it would be the location.

Someone on this thread heard back in 10 weeks. Someone else in 5. Someone in 4.

You definitely cannot say 3 weeks max.

Yeah, I tried to call the admissions office, because it's been 8 weeks for me now. I got nowhere. I'm guessing March 15th for me, too.

i heard back in three months... was exppecting to wait till march.. I think you can be accepted at any time
