Haven't tried... Are we just supposed to call the general admission number?

I think so. That's what I called two days ago. As soon as I told her I was on the waitlist, she said it was in the process of being finalized and would be done by Weds. She made it seem like we'd be getting news really soon.

I called just a few minutes ago to check on my status; I'm an out-of-state resident and started at number 15 on the alternate list but have moved up to number 10, so it seems like things are moving along pretty briskly.

OOS 73 to 57, not as much of a jump as I was hoping for...

As was mentioned earlier in this thread they over accepted by 60. So far 7 people have declined admission. So 54 more people must decline their acceptance before any of us from the WL are accepted. The real movement will begin shortly after May 15th I imagine...

Can you explain this more? I mean, it's obvious that they over accept because otherwise there would be no wait list right? Or does over-accept mean something else here?

I understand that they accepted say 50 OOS people, and then there is a waitlist of 100 or so, and when 1 of the 50 declines, the list moves.

Am I missing something?

TIA

They have handed out 100 acceptance letters so far for the 40 oos spots. So until 60 people decline, they wont take people from the WL. So far 7 people have declined so 54 more people must decline before they even take #1 on the WL.

So the WL movement so far is due to people choosing not to remain on the WL

did they also over accept for in-state or is it different than the out of state list?

I would imagine it is different since so few people deny an in-state acceptance.

Just got a WL update email. 10 spots so far for me.

Called today, got a few bits of information. The In-state list hasn't moved since the e-mail update.

Last year the list moved 6 in march, 5 in april, 14 in may and another 4 before August.
This year the list only moved 2 in march.

Hoping to hear soon.

Well, no movement on the waitlist for me. Any idea if they have taken anyone from the waitlist yet? It kind of worries me that they supposedly over accepted by 60. Can anyone else verify that number? Seems like it gives those of us on the waitlist slim chances.

long ways to go still on alt list 🙁.

I saw my financial aid award on ISIS over the weekend. It's all loans.. 62k in loans 😱 So I think I will be withdrawing soon, but I feel sad because I really liked the school. 🙁 But this should perk things up a little for the OOS waitlisters..

I found out some info today. So far they still have 51 people over-accepted on the OOS list. So there might not be any movement for a while.

Is it just me or has this weak economy/ recession adversely affected institutional aid? While interviewing at schools they said they make every effort to make the school "affordable", but it seems to be all loans, in the 60's for OOS (Iowa) and private medical schools!!!!!!!!!! Need some state school love 😡 this year.
Is financial aid need based or is the economy forcing schools to put the honess on the students to take ALL loans? Anybody know or have heard anything to this effect?
Military scholarship looking good, well with all these wars maybe not.

Looking at past years, I think financial aid has always been tight, regardless of the economic circumstances. From my experience, this is particularly true at state schools and smaller private schools. Although there has been a decline in endowments and the number of people traveling for referral medical care, hospitals are mostly doing just fine.

Withdrew from UIowa today, am OOS, so that overaccepted glut of OOS applicants just decreased by one. Good luck to everyone looking to pursue their MD at UIowa!!

Sorry to hear it came down to $$. Good luck wherever you end up!! 👍

Hey guys, good luck to everyone still waiting! And congrats to all who have already gotten in!

From people who have gotten in or on the wait-list, I was wondering if you can give me some insight if I should even apply to U of Iowa...

My stats: 30 MCAT ( 9 PS / 10 VR / 11 BS)
bioGPA = 3.72
overallGPA = 3.81

I'm from Minnesota.
Decent E.C.'s but no research.

Thanks guys! And once again hang in there those who are on the waitlist!

Might as well apply, but as an OOS you will probably need a higher MCAT, research or ties to the state to get in realistically speaking.

If you were IS, you'll definitely get an interview and have a good shot at an acceptance.

Since you're from MN, definitely apply to UM-TC and UM-Duluth, obviously. You'll have a much better shot at those two schools, though Duluth does favor people who grew up in small towns in MN.

Also, withdrew from Iowa recently (IS) so another spot opened up. Whoever gets it will have a great time at Carver!

Hey I'm also from MN. I was waitlisted this year at Iowa. I remember people saying saying that if you had a ten in each MCAT section you got an auto interview and if not they still considered you. I went to undergrad in Iowa and made it pretty clear in my app that I wished to stay there, so that was my state tie. As for MN duluth, dont bother unless youre from a small rural town/american indian community that you will be going back to.

Anyone called them recently? Today perhaps?

Just called them, quite a bit of movement it seemed like. I'm IS, and now in the mid single digits. Started mid twenties. I plan to withdraw this week. Good luck everybody!🙂

Just called. They still haven't taken any OOS wait list people. She said it should start moving soon because they haven't heard from a few people with multiple acceptances.

Called again. They're still over-accepted by a few on the OOS side....

any idea of the number?
She said "a few".. I didnt really inquire further.. She expected things to move along shortly though...

Wow, I don't know about you other ISers but after the 15th I jumped from 33 to 18. Do you think it's more because people in front of me are dropping off the waitlist or because that many people who were accepted turned Iowa down for other schools? Just curious cause I was looking back through the thread from this time last year and only 9 spots opened in May then...

Hey guys,

Called today for an update regarding the OOS waiting list and was told that they're still over-accepted by 2 students. The woman I spoke to on the phone told me that they're still expecting some movement from the waiting list but that "they don't know how much." As they've cleared the waiting list the last two years, that sounds like a real change in tone. I'm starting to get a little concerned. Think these fears are unfounded, or is it time to start losing hope?

I guess they did a good job of offering spots to people who really wanted to go Iowa this year... I am definitely concerned at this point.

Last year they got to #71 (the last person accepted) on the OOS list 6 days before classes started so movement continued throughout the summer. Also according to last year's thread #46 moved to #6 by 7/8/08 and was accepted on 7/22/08. Not sure if most movement was people dropping off the WL or withdrawing acceptance. This year is a lot slower..

Just called today. The lady I talked to said that there are no more over accepted applicants (OOS) and they are going to be taking from the waitlist from now on. So here is to hoping for a lot of movement in the next few weeks.

Just withdrew from the IS waitlist. Was at number 4. Good luck to everybody! :luck:

Well somebody has finally been accepted from the OOS WL... Unfortunately it wasn't me...

For people getting in off the waitlist: Phi Rho Sigma, a coed medical fraternity house, has a few rooms still available for the fall. We're about a 2-3 minute walk to MERF, making it easy to get to class, study groups, or activities without a long commute or worries about parking. We've also got a great, supportive community of medical students who help each other out.

You'll get your own room, and all meals are included: we have a full-time cook who makes hot lunches and dinners. Breakfast foods are also included. Rent is $525/month, which includes everything: meals, room, and all utilities (internet, cable, laundry, heat, electrical, water, etc.). All in all, a great deal! Message if you're interested....

Why is the OOS not moving at all? Are they full and done?

It seems to me that the class if full (they only took 1 person off of the OOS list this year). It may move a few more spots but I dont think they will be any where near the 90 people they took off last year. Bad year to be on the wait list..... 🙁
