Concerning that specific point. Do you happen to know about when that re-review of people on hold (prior to the end of the interview season) takes place?

I ask because there's not a large window of time between now and the end of March. And because there is a re-review of hold people right after the interview season (prior to waitlist generation), it would make sense that the first re-review isn't only a week or two before the second one. Do you follow my meaning? It's slightly confusing as I read it over. Sometime between now and mid-February (I'm ballparking here) would make the most sense to me. Any input on this Lucid?

Re-reviews can happen because of significant updates at any committee meeting. As far as the "first" or "final" re-review, I have no idea.

Best I can tell you is that you WILL hear something eventually but you won't speed up or slow down the process by waiting by the mailbox and agonizing over it. See previous comments regarding reading, sleeping, any other activity.

You really really can't go by SDN numbers. Back when my class (2010) was applying, there were like 8 of us on here who were accepted and posting up a storm in the class thread. The past 2 years, there's been very few accepted SDN peeps. This is a ridiculously small sample of self-selecting individuals who visit SDN.

Also I don't see where you get 35% rejections from; there's a lot of people waitlisted, and waitlists do not count as rejections. But it doesn't matter. Hold is a hold, most likely (statistically) a waitlist spot. But you never know. Some may think its "mean" but to be real, most people hold all their acceptances until May 15th anyway, so it doesn't matter very much if you find out earlier or later other than from an obsessive knowing every possibility right now or I will die viewpoint.

Please, everyone. Stop overthinking this stuff. As someone who was waitlisted the first time around and accepted the second time around, I can tell you I did not benefit one bit from any fretting and dissecting of the admissions process which I might have indulged in. I would have been better off reading a good book or sleeping or anything else.😀

The 35% rejection after interview only applies to IS. For IS, 321 interviewed, 220 were accepted, 129 enrolled. That data is from 2007, by the way. (found in an earlier post)

That means 101 were rejected or just not accepted. Thus 101 divided by 321 times 100 equals .... 31.4%. So it is actually less than 35% of IS interviewers get rejected.

I guess we can only assume that the people posting on SDN are not indicitive of in state poppulation that interviewed.

or... they are just giving out a lot of these and planning on handing out acceptances later so that they can interview all applicants before handing out the majority of the acceptances. A potential way to improve matriculation/acceptance rates which are used in the ranking systems by US news report.

I know I there is nothing I can do it about it untill may. I am on break now and have some free time. I would love to go to maryland... family ties and baltimore love baby!. Go Ravens

Thanks for all the info lucid, it is nice to hear how it works. You said you were on waitlisted your first time? Did you too get a hold letter?

I was one of the 31.5% last year!!! Yay for crappy MCAT scores and pity interviews!

You're not including waitlisted. Waitlisted is not rejected.

Yes. Application year 2005 interviewed late, hold, middle of waitlist (3-tiers that year). Reapplied for 2006 interviewed Feb, accepted.

Really??? Waitlist isnt a rejection? Wow. I am pretty sure that if you are still waitlisted in october of the year you should matriculate... it is a rejection. If not, that would be great because i could just tell people that I didnt get rejected... I just didnt get accepted!?! Anyway, a waitlist is certianly not an acceptance. And it still doesnt change the fact that 68% of instate interviews got an acceptance. It would just mean that 32 percent was permenantly waitlisted or flat out rejected. Right? I mean you are in med school you would know this better than i would. I suppose i am being oblivious.

Yes, according to those numbers, 32% of applicants will eventually be rejected (I received a rejection from Maryland after the waitlist played itself out, so I don't think anyone was permanently waitlisted).

Since we can all agree that applying can be a mystifying process, I think it's best to just let this be.

Lucid's offered you her opinion a few times and you've posted your own to seek clarity. While that's fine, who knows how many times this will have to go back and forth for one side to see the logic of the other.

If the numbers and the math and the SDN posts don't agree with what Maryland has said in the past, the best people to talk to are in the admissions office.

We can only offer advice from our observations and experiences with Maryland in previous cycles. If those advice/observations don't jive with what's on SDN, then there's not much that we can say.

SDN people are (sometimes more neurotic and) more aware of the application procedure and therefore more "successful" in that sense?

I'm not sure that it's true that the more neurotic you are, the more successful you are. Perhaps a good discussion topic.

I think the idea that hold's/waitlist generate conversation is quite possible, whereas those who've been accepted begin to have other resources to obtain the information they need. (ha, I still prefer SDN to a generic packet from a university any day)

Additionally, I know of 2 lurkers on here, without usernames, that are hanging on the their acceptances to UMD for 2009. (One will most likely be going elsewhere...)

So who counts as SDN community? Those that post? those that use the interview question database? Any internet community is generally larger than might be initially apparent.

I think I was way overthinking this matter when I posted before :bang:

I put the word "successful" in quotes because I didn't think that was really the best word choice. But I was just making a vague connection that if you've been SDN-crazy for a long time, then you would have known how rigorous this process is and maybe prepared yourself more for that ahead of time. Obviously, if you have a 2.5/20, then no matter how neurotic of a premed you are, you won't be very successful, but I guess I was thinking that if you've been a seriously neurotic SDNer for a while, then you maybe didn't let yourself prep so little and do so poorly. Meh anyway, it's not a very good argument.

I think I'm just gonna hope I hear from somewhere else soon so I'll know not to worry about a Plan B. That was my main reason for wanting to "figure this out," whether I can possibly hear back from UM soon enough to not form Plan B. But after hearing what everyone else has said yesterday, I'm not hoping to hear back from UM for another few months...

I'd suggest you do that Plan B now, I'm working on a Plan C since I'm already in my year off...such is life I suppose.

Your still awesome... keep your hopes up for this year. Good luck at your interview!

Thanks 🙂 I'm sure I'll be posting how it went

I'm interviewing at Maryland next week. I'm not a fan of the dean, he's been to my school a couple times and has rubbed me the wrong way, But shuuuut don't tell him I said that.

I'm pretty sure he reads the SDN forums. He's referenced them a few times when I've heard him speak. Better hope you don't have any identifying information on here.

Yeah I don't really see the point in writing this. Just be careful. Things stay in cyberspace forever (as someone whose initial, clumsy personal statement drafts can be found on google if you type in the right query, trust me).

I don't think me saying that I'm not particularly fond of the dean is anything for anyone to worry about. I have the right to dislike an individual. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't love to be a student at the institution. If me not liking the dean is enough for them not to offer me a spot than so be it. I didnt apply to Maryland to converse with the dean, I applied because of my love for the school and to become a physician.

i got accepted today! umd is my dream school! 🙂 good luck to everyone 👍

yay, i just got an interview invite to maryland! my issue is that i can only find driving directions to the school- is maryland not accessible by public transportation? i was hoping to take the bus or the train from philly- i don't have a car and don't drive much so i'm not sure what i will do if i can't take public transportation. there also wasn't anything in the email about student hosts- i feel like student hosts have been very valuable resources during all of my previous interviews, so i was wondering whether there was some sort of unofficial list of hosts that you guys know about? thanks for any help! im looking forward to my interview!

Congrats. Yes, there is this thing called the light rail which stops at the train station and very near UMD. One of the china-town buses (MVP i think its called) has a stop near the train station, although im not sure its on the Philly route.

Yah the light rail is cheap and effective... if you go to the MTA website, they might have the routes to take to get to the lightrail... Also you could probably take the greyhound or amtrak from Philly to B-more...

About the hotels... the ones near campus are expensive... you can call the school to see about hosting... Their admissions people are the NICEST! One of them actually paid for my ticket for the light rail, since I did not have change for a 20😎

Contact the admissions office; they keep a list of students willing to host.

can i ask IS /OOS and when you were complete?

Thanks! Everyone on this thread is so helpful...if this is any indication of the students at Maryland, I will really enjoy the school. I'm OOS and was complete at the end of December. They scheduled my interview for early March, which makes me think there probably aren't a whole lot of interview spots left, but they're not completely gone yet...good luck to anyone hoping for an invite!

Hotels in the area are expensive, although you can get the "student discount" at least at the Holiday Inn if you tell them you're with the University of Maryland when they ask "any group affiliation?" over the phone. Ends up being a little over $100 for the room I think. Which isn't bad considering I looked at the back of the hotel room door when I was staying for my interview and a little tag said the normal price of the room is ~$300 a night.

My couch, however, is free.

Thanks everyone. I'm a little bummed, but I'm ok. And lucky, I interviewed on 12/3. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting to hear!

i have my maryland interview coming up in about two weeks. how is the interview? what is the interview like? any advice??

There are two interviews, each about 45 minutes to an hour (they are back-to-back). Usually one is with an MD or PhD and the other is with a student interviewer or another admissions officer. Maryland interviews are typically laid-back and very conversational.

I say typically because I had a slightly different experience. My first interviewer was with someone on staff in the admissions office. It was a very straight-forward and simple interview. My second was with a urologist who asked me all sorts of ethical questions (i.e. he gave me an ethical scenario a physician might face and then asked me how I would handle it) littered with some other random questions. I felt like I did pretty well but it was definitely my most stressful interview of the entire cycle for me.

Check here for information on specific questions, etc. asked during the interview.

Agreed. Typically friendly interviewers.

By now, you've received the schedule but be aware that you can have morning and/or afternoon interviews.

Both of mine were in the morning. The first was in the admissions office and it was a friendly conversation, but it was difficult to speak without interrupting my interviewer. My advice is to not be afraid to get some words in if you find yourself in this situation or the interview is useless if you don't speak up.

My second interview was with a pathologist who went after my experiences, school choices, and career plans the entire interview. The tone was confrontational but polite. My only advice for an interview like that is to stay focused, watch your body language, and make sure you don't sound frustrated or stressed.

Oh! And please, please don't forget your interviewer's name. Or shake the hand of his secretary thinking that she's your interviewer. Bad juju.

About three hours ago, I received a call from Dean Foxwell; I got in!!!!!!!!!!!

That's awesome! Congratulations! Come join us in the official University of Maryland Class of 2013 thread!

PS - I wonder why you got a phone call acceptance. As far as I know, the rest of us received our acceptance notifications via snail mail.

Thanks. I am not sure why I got a call, but Dean Foxwell did say that he was calling a few other people too. He told us at the interview that we would receive a decision a week earlier, so maybe that is why. Not sure, but still really excited.

I just got an interview invite for February 18th! I'm so stoked! Anyone know if these interviews are for waitlist or acceptances? Is the class already full?

Congrats.

Hmm, LisaSimpson said she got an interview for mid-march two weeks ago. I wonder if that means they are now just filling spots of people who are withdrawing a previously scheduled interview. Or maybs its some IS / OOS thing, or nothing at all ...

Good luck.

I interviewed a couple weeks ago and received a letter today saying that my application was still in active consideration and they had not yet made a decision to accept, reject, or waitlist. What does this mean? Has anyone else gotten this? I am going to send a letter of interest/intent tomorrow. I want to go here so badly!

It is a hold letter. Same thing that I and numerous other instate students recieved. I had a big discussion on this if you look on the previous page. Good luck. I loved maryland too.
