I wish I was going to the premat program but I have a vacation planned during that time.

I would love to come to the pre-matriculation program. But, my wife is due with our second little girl on June 26, and I need to work as much as I can until we move.

So, I'll see you all in August.

cool, have you found housing yet, carriebad?

Is anyone else having trouble fitting all your expenses into the budget pitt gives you? I emailed them and they said they will only increase your COA is you have children and that any bills your bring with you to pitt don't count. So I'm confused about how I'm supposed to pay my cell, car, and car insurance bills.

I am living in Edgewood (and buying a house...yikes!).

Slade, when are you moving?

I am fairly certain that you can take out some private loans to cover those expenses (also, keep in mind that they over-estimate expenses on the budget, so you should have some extra $ - for instance they give you $ for tx costs, but Pitt students ride public tx for free, so that money can go towards your car, etc.). I have my undergrad loans through Accessgroup (I think that's who Pitt has loans through) and I was able to borrow more than the COA, but it was through a private loan. I'm surprised the Financial Aid Office wasn't more helpful...

I was very surprised they weren't more helpful. I emailed them again asking what my options are, but I'm still waiting for a response. I actually created my own budget using some of the figures they estimate for living expenses and I estimated the bare minimum for the various expenses I will have and I still need $5000 more to cover my car, cell, and car insurance (I have a $317/mo car payment 😱). One of my problems is that I will be living alone, so, I have higher living expenses than someone who will live with a roomie.

Man, that sucks. I am sure you can take out some private loans to cover the expenses, so I wouldn't worry too much. Hopefully the FAO will be more helpful... Good luck!

I'm in a similar situation, MedYEP. I know two people who just finished M1 at Pitt that have families and the COA doesn't cut it (my situation also). What they did was take out direct-to-consumer private loans, and that's what I'm looking into doing right now. You can't use any school certified private loans because you can't get more than the COA that way. So, you need to find loans that do not need to be certified by the school.

Wells Fargo and PNC are the only two lenders I have found so far that do this.

Also, one of the guys I refered to told me it is a good idea to take out a loan that will cover the extra amount you need for all four years. That way you don't have to get someone to cosign on four loans, just one.

I'm nervous though about being at the mercy of this private loan during residency.

There is no perfect answer.

Another problem with the COA is that they only count 10 months of food and rent... it's as if we don't exist outside of med school, so no need to feed us during the summer... nah, I guess they expect us to work, but really, who will have the energy to work at gap for a summer after M1?? :lame:

Just wanted to say hi. Super excited about Pitt! Can't wait to meet you all 🙂

sweet! are you coming to the premat program?

no i'll be on vacation during the first part of it. hope you guys have a blast & keep me posted on what i'm missing.

congrats! hope you get good news soon 😀 :luck:

Congrats guys! Are you both going to attend??

While filling out the Promisary Note on the AESSuccess web site, it asks us to pick a lender. I don't have too much info about lenders. Does it really matter which one we pick? Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Anyone who is attending the prematriculation program, have you gotten any info about it? Class time, where to be and when? Anything? Do we just show up on June 15?

I sent in the two forms but I haven't heard anything yet

actually, it says we have to be in by 5 on sunday (preferably) so maybe they've got something organized on sunday night??

Well at least I'm not the only one who has no idea about what's going on. I'm pretty used to it by now, but it's nice that I'm not alone...

I'm so jealous you guys get to go to the premat program and meet some classmates! I want to meet all of you!!

I will be in town June 16-18 looking for an apartment, so, maybe I can stop by! 🙂

you should! the premat program has housing search scheduled for tuesday the 16th, so you should tag along to get all the info! 🙂

OnlyNeedOneYes: Wash U
Slade: Pitt

Chuck's Right Foot: deciding b/w miami and pitt?

Yup, I'm going to WashU. I'm not a non-trad, if anyone is trying to figure out if they'll slide into the spot I left. I'm just your average white guy, ton of research, a little lacking on clinical stuff, good stats.

Definitely Pitt. I guess you'd call me a traditional white guy though--straight from college 🙂

Has anyone gotten info about the health insurance for med students?

Did you get it in the mail? I haven't gotten anything. Maybe I'm no longer invited...

I am in the process of getting this worked out myself. I was told to speak to Kim in the Office of Student Affairs.

Thanks! I just called the Office of Student Affairs and was told that they are in the process of putting together a health insurance packet to send out to incoming students in the next week or two. She wasn't sure if it would be emailed or mailed to us.

Fantastic! Nice work!

i'm in Darragh. you should look on craigslist, there's a ton of appartments advertized.
also, I know that two current MS1s (female) were looking for a third roommate on the Pittsburgh 2013 facebook page. You should check there too. :luck:

the oak hill appartments seem pretty good. I was hosted in one for my interview (a 2BR) and it was very comfortable/spacious/sunny. They are a little on the pricey side (700-900$ for a 1 BR) but they are SO close to school!

thanks for the help slade 🙂 does anyone know if pitt is going to open up a forum for incoming MS1s specifically to talk about housing? i think some of the other schools do that...

on another note, i am SO EXCITED!!!! 😀

hey slade! i'm gonna be in the darragh apartments too! i talked to someone in the housing office (kevin maybe?) and he said that he'd be mailing the leases for us to go over & sign. have you received anything yet?

i'm so excited too!!!

slade and ana, i too will be joining you in darragh! are you guys living in singles or doubles?! i haven't received my lease yet either and i'm afraid i won't get it before i leave the country! i hope he doesn't have to have it by a certain deadline! when i last talked to him, he said that he was getting our cards ready! ahhh, i'm so excited to meet everyone!

So I am in the "first group" to be pulled for WL movement. I am in limbo! Miami starts 8/6... I guess I'll give Pitt till 7/6 and keep my fingers crossed.

What in the world! They wrote you to say you're basically next up if slots open up? Crazy.
