On average, how long is it taking to get an answer? I have been complete since 7/28, and I have heard nothing. I've looked at some MDapps profiles, and others have gotten answers fairly quickly. I'm coming up on 6 weeks. Should I call just to make sure everything's okay?

I'm instate, go to UVA undergrad, and have been complete for 5 weeks. Still no word....

Only one of my pre-med UVA undergrad friends has gotten an interview so far, and I'm pretty sure she had > 35 mcat.

I sent in the secondary on 8/15, got it complete on 8/18, and I'm still waiting for an interview invite. I'm really hoping for this because UVA's my top choice. 🙁

Hey guys!

Does anyone know the best hotels to stay in? I'm trying to figure out accommodations, and I left the packet they sent me at home 🙁

Thanks!

There are a lot of hotels in the area. Any hotel on W Main street, and you should be fine (ie within walking distance to school).

The closest hotel is probably the Red Roof Inn. It's pretty much right where W Main Street meets JPA, and it's probably a five minute walk to the Hospital from there.

So does anyone know when to expect decisions if we've already interviewed? I'm assuming they send them out tomorrow and we should receive them in the mail by Friday or so?

I loved UVA when I interviewed and would be really excited to get accepted. Especially because it's in-state. 🙄

Has anyone heard anything from them recently? I was complete 9/5...

Funkydrmonkey, I was complete about 2 weeks ago and haven't heard anything. Other than that "I was complete and may not hear anything for weeks or months"

I'd be really surprised if you don't hear from UVA sometime soon, especially since you are in-state and you have gotten so many interviews at other great schools (like Columbia ... *jealous*).

Thanks for the encouragement. I've heard that UVA really prefers their students to have at least a 10 in every MCAT section (actually heard this from the dean of admissions at a presentation) so I'm not counting on getting an interview (that 9 in PS is a killer for sure 😡)...

That's not good news for me! 🙁

Or me... I've been waiting to hear ANYTHING from there for ages *sigh* I need to start making phone calls and sending updates 🙁.

I'm handing in a letter of intent today. Hopefully that gets me an interview. I can't wait any longer.

So if 10 is their unofficial MCAT cutoff, do you know if they have an unofficial GPA cutoff? I also haven't heard anything from UVA (and I'm also in-state 😡), but my GPA is probably not where it needs to be 🙁

Crap. I never noticed before, but they are the only school I applied to that had a 10 as the 10% marker in each section. I'll be so disappointed if my 9PS gets me. That was the most absurd PS section I'd seen and really sucked considering I was 12-13 on my last three AAMC tests. Noooooooo!

I have a < 10 score in one section and got an interview. (I'm worried that they'll reject me because of that section score 🙁 ) But, I guess a 10+ isn't that important if they interviewed an OOSer who doesn't have the 10+...

Don't worry guys! I'm sure the 10+ isn't a cutoff... after all, their average for each subscore is high 10-11ish... which means that they had to have some below

Sorry guys if I freaked you all out, but the dean said something like "we really like to see our students have at least a 10 in every section." He also said that a subscore of 8 in any section is pretty much the lowest they would accept.

So even if you've got a score below 8, it doesn't mean you won't get an interview/acceptance.

And berken, I like to think that if you interview somewhere, then you are pretty much fine on paper (which includes your MCAT score). So I don't think that a <10 score will keep you from getting an acceptance from them.

Good luck! :luck:

Got the letter in the mail today: ACCEPTED! :soexcited:

YESSSSSSS.

UVA is awesome! I was really impressed with the entire school when I interviewed (10/7) and it's definitely one of my top choices. Plus, they gave me a decision in TEN days! Why can't all schools turn around so quickly? The waiting is far worse then getting rejected or waitlisted for me. Everyone I met there was nice, the interview day was perfectly run and organized, and I haven't been to any other school where the admissions dean took the time to memorize the names, hometowns, and activities of every member of my interview group.

Now that's attention to detail.

So if you're waiting for an interview, hang in there because it is definitely worth it in my opinion. Best of luck! :luck:

Congrats!!! Yeah, I'm waiting on a decision. I wish it weren't through snail mail, though! It's hard to wait if you live in cali 😛 Hopefully, by the 20th I'll hear something.

Snail-mail sucks when you're waiting, but I think getting the decision in writing first is kind of nice since it gives it more finality (or maybe that's just me!)

But anyway, I really hope you get some good news soon! 🙂

I'm really pulling for an interview. I got a response to my letter of intent today. Hopefully I see something soon.

You wrote an LOI before you had an interview? What did you say? I am thinking about writing one.

It was sort of a cross between a LOI and an update letter. The updates were tied to why I wanted to go to the school though. Other than the updates, I detailed why I loved the school so much. I know the school pretty well, and I know it's where I want to be. I figured why not try to get the ball rolling. It can't hurt.

And I just emailed it to Lesley Thomas, the director of admissions. I don't think UVA has a dean of admissions.

Did they respond nicely?

Is UVA really your number one choice and you would definitely go there if accepted? I'm just wondering about writing letters of interest/intent/update if the school is definitely 100% my #1 choice because then I feel like I'm being dishonest...

She thanked me for the letter and told me it would be appended to my application.

Yep, no question about it. Although I did qualify my statement by saying my commitment was pending significant financial aid from another school. I doubt that is coming, but I just wanted to make sure I covered my bases.

thats pretty cool- as a bme dont you have many of the same prof's youll have in medschool- especially if you do anything research/phd related? it makes the most sense to go to my state school- pretty much a twin of yours- but ive already been there 4 years.

Seems to be lots of people out there stressing since they havn't heard from UVA. I wouldn't worry too much - you're not the only one! I interviewed at Vandy last week and I everyone was commenting that they havn't heard from Virginia. Keep in mind they only interview 5 or 6 people a day 3 days a week (I think) so it'll take them a while to get through the pile.

Also some talk about the 10+ MCAT score deal - I got a 9 on the VR and I was interviewed pretty early... UVA is on record for not putting as much faith into MCATs as other schools. Hope this helps!😀

Guess I should also say that I found out I was ACCEPTED yesterday. AND UVA somehow managed to pull off the upset win over UNC in OT! Rushing the field is awesome, reminded me of doing it when we beat #3 Florida State in 2005... So a pretty good day all around yesterday!! 😎

Congrats! Were you at the game? I wish we didn't rush since it wasn't that big of a game (I guess the steak had a lot to do with it), but I did it anyways since I figured I'll never do it again.

My anger at UVA for beating Carolina yesterday was tempered by finding an acceptance letter from UVA in the mail today. 😀

Yeah i probably trampled like 10 people on the way down (who goes the OTHER way with that crowd?)... kinda BS since UNC was only #18, but I'm not complaining!! 👍

And you'd think they learned their lesson after the win vs. FSU...it's been three years but it feels just like yesterday.

I heard that UVA has higher standards for people who went there for undergrad. Perhaps that's why I haven't heard anything despite being complete since early August. Either that or it's my GPA.

There were a lot of UVA students at my EVMS interview day (I think there were 8 from UVA out of 15 interviewees), and none of them had been invited to interview at UVA. It just seems a bit odd - aren't state-supported schools supposed to help us residents out?

Actually it's the opposite. Based on 2007 entering class at least. I can't remember the exact numbers, but I think we had 240ish apply and about 60 accepted. Like I said, not positive that is correct. I do know that the average GPA and MCAT was well below the average for the entire accepted class.

I'm figuring that if I don't get an invite in the next two weeks, I'm probably not getting one. That LOI better work!

I had my interview at UVA on October 14th and it definitely moved up high on my list. So I was pretty happy when they sent me a letter of acceptance on the 17th 😀

I just looked at MDApps and realized that they haven't interviewed anyone with an MCAT below 33 yet. Somehow this doesn't surprise me...

Maybe they will invite the rest of us to interview soon!

Seeing as their avg MCAT score is a 33...they have to eventually interview you!

Oh yeah!!! You just reminded me...of the people I interviewed with, 4 out of the 5 had interviews at WashU. The 5th didn't apply. I'm pretty sure I had the lowest stats of the bunch. 😛 I think they're interviewing higher stats people first...?

Yeah, unless they're trying to get a higher MCAT average this cycle... 🙁

That's probably true, and I think I remember hearing something similar. For a school that says they aren't very "numbers-focused," it sure seems like they are to me!

Nope! The dean (during his admissions speech) said: Our avgs last year were a 3.7 and a 33 and we're aiming for that this year.

It's not going up!
