what if i had interviews for both schools and wanted to explore the option of staying with a student host. do you think that would be a major inconvenience for a med student to put up a kid for 2 nights? should i hotel motel holiday inn it?

It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask. 🙂

I've hosted students for two nights. Another option would be to stay with a UP-er one night and a CCLCM-er another.

Very true, and I totally understand that many schools aren't too organized with their admissions process. However, for those schools that are, I feel like it would be relatively helpful for them to post a brief synopsis of their app review procedure, not to calm down the applicants, but also to save THEM time with responding to applicants. but again, I understand that adcoms can't possibly be all that organized... I don't know how large they are, but I can imagine how annoying it is to deal with 5000 applications + secondaries + interviews + etc.
Hmm, I wonder if other schools are any more organized than we are. We have FAR fewer applicants and applications than most places do, but then we also have far fewer admissions staff. Tough to say.

Man, if I get an interview here, I'll probably go skydiving.
If I help you get one, will you take me with you? 😀

OMG CCLCM interview!!!!!!!!!

No word from the UP yet. I'll have to ask about it when I call to schedule. I'm ecstatic! 😀

interview at both case/cclcm

complete 7/20
Congrats, everyone! :hardy:

Congrats to the recent interview invite recipients. Kind of gives me hope that I might hear back soon. Honestly though I don't think I really deserve an interview at CCLCM. I couldn't write a convincing argument on why I wanted to be a physician scientist because my research experience wasn't the most positive as an undergrad. But if I get one, all the better. If I just get Case, I'll be plenty happy. Neither and well.. 🙁

I feel the same way too. My research experience hasn't been the greatest thing but I feel that in a way it teaches us something. We learn to live through frustration, disappointment with putting in work and getting nothing out of it, and we learn how to better handle scientific research for the future. Lets hope for the best.
Don't be so negative and hard on yourselves, guys. We only can interview 250 people just because of the logistics of managing everything, but there are definitely many more people than that who DESERVE interviews. That's why it's bad to apply late. In past years, there have been good applicants who might have gotten invites earlier, but they didn't get one because there weren't any more slots left.

hey, quick question (feel free to yell at me if I'm being stupid) :

if we applied to the college and university track, and assuming the UP has already started sending out invites and our apps are really being held up by CCLCM, does it mean that the UP has offered us an interview if we haven't had any correspondence? I would think that any app which is rejected from UP would automatically be rejected by CCLCM...
No, definitely not. There are two separate adcomms who make separate decisions for invites, acceptances, rejections, although they do talk to each other. Someone like Christian from the UP admissions attends the CCLCM adcomm meetings, and Dean Franco from CCLCM is on the UP adcomm.

Nice idea, but no. If you haven't heard from them on a decision, it typically means they haven't made one yet. And that goes for everybody, not just people who have applied to both. Applications are initially reviewed and those that are not immediately rejected are then reviewed repeatedly throughout the season. If you haven't heard a decision yet, it means just that - one hasn't been made yet.

CCLCMer has already discussed overlap and people applying to both schools. CCLCM is not a superset of UP. Acceptance to one has no bearing on the other, with the exception of interview coordination if invited to interview at both.
Exactly. 👍

Oh really?? I guess I missed this... so you're saying it's possible for someone to be accepted to CCLCM and NOT the UP? didn't know that.

but I guess it isn't very likely, as CCLCM accepts <50 people, so obviously if you're good enough to get in there, you'll get into the UP as well.
No. There are four possible outcomes after applying to both CCLCM and the UP: accepted to both programs, accepted to UP only, accepted to CCLCM only, or accepted to neither. Some of my classmates were accepted to both programs (and I was too), while others were only accepted to CCLCM. Again, the admissions decisions are largely separate.

I think one thing that's important to remember, considering a lot of the dialogue as of late, is that as much as people want this to be, admissions is not purely a numbers game. This isn't like applying to undergrad where if you had the grades and SATs, you could reasonably be assured of acceptance. Yes, you need to have the numbers, but medical schools look for much more than that. This is why there's no such thing as a "safety school" when it comes to medicine.

You'll make things a lot easier on yourself if you move away from thinking of medical schools as good/better/best and actually consider the differences between the schools. This is what the admissions officers are doing with all of you, and you owe it all to yourselves to do the same with all of the schools you're applying to. If you pick a place that is "better" (which is entirely unquantifiable when it comes to medical schools, regardless of what US News would have you believe) but that isn't as good a fit for you, you're going to be a lot less happy than if you pick somewhere that's a good fit for you - whether that's a state school or one that's not as well known as Harvard or Hopkins. We all know people who got into top tier schools but were outright rejected from many "second" and "third tier" schools.

Fit is key, remember that. And don't take rejection as meaning you're not good enough, you just simply might not fit with the class the admissions committee is trying to build.

We've all heard about schools trying to bump their numbers in any given year and rejecting purely based on numbers without considering the whole application, and yes, it does happen. But that's typically the exception.

Good luck to all of you throughout this process, and I hope you do wind up somewhere that's really the right place for you! :luck:
Quoted for truth.

when do cwru/cclcm make admission offers/decisions
I already explained how our decisions work earlier in the thread. Search the thread for "semi-rolling" and you'll find that post.

what if i had interviews for both schools and wanted to explore the option of staying with a student host. do you think that would be a major inconvenience for a med student to put up a kid for 2 nights? should i hotel motel holiday inn it?
My personal opinion is that asking to stay another night could put your host in an awkward position. They might not want to host you for two nights, but they could feel obligated to do it because it's harder to say no after they already agreed to host you for one day. What I did when I applied was to ask the host for advice about which hotel they recommended I stay at for the second night. That way, it was up to them to offer to let me stay a second night if they wanted to. Usually they did offer, sometimes they didn't.

You might be thinking, what's the big deal anyway? Well, I had a really bad hosting experience (as an acceptee on a second look visit, not as a host). This girl had agreed to host me who didn't want to. Evidently all of this person's friends were hosting people, and she felt pressured by her friends to host a second looker too. What really brought things to a head was that my host was keeping a diary on her computer which she (accidentally? purposely?) left open. She had gone to class, so I was there alone. I moved the mouse on her computer to open a browser so I could check my email (with her prior permission), and the first thing I saw when the screensaver went off was that morning's diary entry talking about how she was sorry she had agreed to host someone and didn't know why she had let her friends talk her into it, etc. etc.

Fortunately, I had a friend in that city, and I went and stayed with him instead. I didn't know what else to do, because how could I stay with this girl knowing for a fact that she didn't want to host me? So I left her a note thanking her and saying that I thought we'd both be more comfortable if I went and stayed somewhere else. I guess she wasn't expecting me to leave like that, because in the evening when I went to a dinner hosted by another student, the second student asked which of us had stayed with the first person and then left. Major awkwardness all around. I had already pretty much decided that I didn't want to go to that school anyway, but still, it was very uncomfortable for the rest of the weekend. So, I'm telling you from experience that it's really awful to have a begrudging host who feels like they were forced into hosting you. I would never want any host to feel like she did, or any applicant to feel like I did, either. 😳

CCLCMer, for the win!

I am a little confused, and I'm sure this has been answered in the thread previously, but does an invitation to interview for the college track (cclcm) necessarily mean you will receive an interview invite for the UP program? I know some people have been getting consecutive interview dates for the UP program and the cclcm program, so i was curious whether they necessarily come hand in hand. Case wouldnt invite someone for the cclcm interview and then call that person for a UP interview at a different time, right?

Ooooo would that add to the diversity of the school??? lol
Sorry, not at this school. Now, if you were a dull, boring kind of person, THAT would add diversity. But then none of your interviewers would like you, so you wouldn't get in anyway. :meanie:

Seriously, you'll be fine just as you are. Case is obviously interested in you, or they wouldn't have invited you. Make sure you practice interviewing, and look at the interview feedback on SDN to see what questions people have been asked in the past. Good luck!

Thanks a bunch! Any suggestions for practicing interviewing? I know it sounds kind of obvious, but it'd be good just to hear it from someone who's actually done it and has obviously had success (you.) lol

Thanks a bunch for being such a help on this thread and guiding a bunch of us through the process!<-----not sarcastic, lol

Normally, no. This year, the coordination is kind of out of wack, so maybe. If you already got a CCLCM invite, call the UP office and ask them about their decision so that you can schedule the interviews together.

I'm a little embarrassed to even tell you what I did to prepare, because it only emphasizes how anal I am for all of SDN to see. BUT, in my defense, I'm a researcher (which is why I came here), and this worked really well for me, so here goes!

A week or two before each interview, I would go through the SDN feedback for that school and write down all the questions people said they had been asked. I went back as far as necessary to get 50 unique questions. Then I thought about how I would answer each one and jotted some notes. It was hardest for my first interview, but a lot of questions overlap from school to school (ex. why do you want to be a doctor, why not MD/PhD, etc.), so it got easier as the year went on. I interviewed at Case/CCLCM really late (January), so by then, I had already thought about how I would answer a lot of the questions people posted. If you decide to do this, the only caution I would give you is that you shouldn't write out full sentences and memorize them. Just think in general about how you would answer each question and practice answering some of them spontaneously, without major rehearsing.

The other thing I would do is print out all of the curriculum info from the school website and read through it. The goal is to understand how the curriculum is set up well enough that you can discuss it with your interviewers and the admissions people. Case is understandably proud of the new Western Reserve 2 curriculum, and you will make a good impression if you already know a lot about it. Plus, if you read the info on the website, then you will have intelligent questions to ask when the interviewer asks you what questions you have. There's always something unclear about every school's curriculum from the website, and that's something you can discuss with the faculty interviewers. You can ask student interviewers about student life things, but don't ask faculty about that kind of stuff because most of them won't know. Total conversation stopper.

Oh, some schools send you the names of your interviewers ahead of time. If the school did that, I'd always look the interviewers up, see what their specialties and research interests were, that kind of thing. I thought it was only fair to find out about them, because they got to read all about me! Sometimes there would be things we had in common or something interesting in their CV that I wanted to ask the interviewers about. One of these interviewers I had looked up spent the entire interview time showing me around his lab and telling me about his projects. It didn't really feel like an interview at all, and I got accepted to that school, which made it even better!

Ok, I have to get up at 5 tomorrow, so no more questions. I mean it! :meanie:

I did pretty much the exact same things you describe in gory detail. 🙂 I still have the notes, since I wrote them all up on my comp. The night before my interviews, I would review my notes a few times and just try to relax more than anything else.

What I found really helpful was a mock interview that I did about one month before my first interview (which happened to be Case). I worked with an admissions consultant (Judy Colwell - very easily Googleable) and she was just fantastic throughout the process - but I think it's too late to get started with her. Check if your school offers mock interviewing.

Thanks a bunch! That was extremely helpful. No more questions from me tonight!

is case/cclcm one of those that send us the names of their interviewers?
Sorry, I applied four years ago, and I don't remember. Maybe one of the current applicants who already got their interview packet can tell you.

I did pretty much the exact same things you describe in gory detail. 🙂 I still have the notes, since I wrote them all up on my comp. The night before my interviews, I would review my notes a few times and just try to relax more than anything else.
Good, I'm glad it's not just me.

I have no experience with using a consultant, but I think the mock interview idea is a good one. I did that too.

Thanks a bunch! That was extremely helpful. No more questions from me tonight!
No more answers from me. I'm really going to bed now so that I don't fall asleep on rounds. Good niiiiiiiiiiight, everyone! 😴

Starting last year, Case UP no longer sends applicants the name of their faculty interviewer.

Yeah, I was going to say. I didn't get notice when I interviewed. I was beginning to think I was just blind.

Ahh, good to know, thanks for the correction! I interviewed two years ago, so there you go. 🙂

So if I'm interviewing in early october, I don't need to immediately sign up with a student host do I? They probably are busy with interviews in september to keep track...

sigh.. much expected rejection from UP program. Haven't heard anything from CCLCM.

Still haven't heard anything from anyone at Case... is this unusual? Seems like everybody either has at least one interview or a rejection at this point..

should there be a separate category called "CCCLM" along with the University Track correspondence and MSTP/CTSTP on the status page, if i selected to also apply to the CCCLM program?

Nope, I'm in the same boat. I guess since people are getting rejections already, it's either a slight reason for hope or suggests one might be in store for us too. I'll try to think positive.

I was complete August 31st last year, given an interview invite mid-October, and interviewed in early December. Try not to dwell on this too much.:luck::xf:

should there be a separate category called "CCCLM" along with the University Track correspondence and MSTP/CTSTP on the status page, if i selected to also apply to the CCCLM program?

Nope. CCLCM doesn't use iApply.

UP rejection here. My first rejection of the cycle, but at least I got a CCLCM interview, huh? No email yet. I just looked at iApply.

wow thats crazy bryson, you're a stud tho

at least you wouldn't have to schedule your cclcm interview in november

Thanks man. Yeah, I think I fit better at the CCLCM anyway, but I was interested in the UP. The first rejection definitely stung a lot more last year.

haha thats cuz u were on a roll. i got rejected from BU and Mayo pretty early, but going through job interview process made me a bit more non-nonchalant about getting itnerviews and whatnot

i think post-interview rejections would hurt though, so hopefully these rejections make us more focused 🙂

Oh sorry. My rejection for UP came through iApply. I didn't get an email about it. My CCLCM interview invite came through email. No mention of CCLCM status in iApply.

BTW, the Broncos are awesome. I was born in Boise. 2nd floor corner room of St. Luke's hospital. I lived up on Table Rock until I was 13. Sometimes I wish I could go back. If only BSU had a med school 🙄.

I know this has been answered a million times, but the CCLCM interview invite was by direct e-mail?

cclcm does not do anything by iapply, all by email

the staff at both are AWESOME btw, and they sound very attractive too

Rejected UP here too. Not too optimistic about CCLCM either. I guess if you apply to 30+ schools with a science GPA < 3.5 you better get used to rejections, I've already gotten 4 lol

I would start calling people now if I were you. Next week is September already, so your interview isn't that far away. People get busier as the year goes on, and there might not be people to host you if you wait until the last minute.

sigh.. much expected rejection from UP program. Haven't heard anything from CCLCM.

Me too😳
Sorry, guys. Hope you get better news from CCLCM. :luck:

should there be a separate category called "CCCLM" along with the University Track correspondence and MSTP/CTSTP on the status page, if i selected to also apply to the CCCLM program?
NOOOOOOO!!! CCLCM doesn't use the Case status page, which we've discussed several times already. By the way, you have a great username. Very clever.

UP rejection here. My first rejection of the cycle, but at least I got a CCLCM interview, huh? No email yet. I just looked at iApply.
You were the one who said all along that you thought CCLCM was a better fit. Looks like you were right. When are you coming?

Yes, it will come by email.

Sorry. But as you just saw, a rejection by the UP doesn't automatically equal a rejection by CCLCM. Hope things work out for you. :luck:

You were the one who said all along that you thought CCLCM was a better fit. Looks like you were right. When are you coming?
10/5. I can't wait, it should be a good experience to finally see this place and meet everyone there.

Ok, I know that we have really small classes, but you still aren't going to be able to meet all of us!

Seriously, that's a great time of year to come to Cleveland. The fall is beautiful here. I'm on EM at UH in early October, but I'll try to stop by for the lunch or wrapup if I'm around that day.

I'm curious as to how you deduced this.
Just by their sound.

You guys sound like a fun bunch. Myuu, I have a feeling we're in for some crazy interview days!
