Congratulations, and good luck at Penn! What happened to everyone wanting to go to Ohio... 😀

Anyway, do rental apartments usually come unfurnished? If so, I should probably plan on coming a little earlier. I'm lazy... 🙁

I was under the impression that the vast majority come unfurnished.🙂

Good luck to all those making their final decision tonight - big decision day tomorrow. With all the Case vs. ???? threads, I am excited to see the number of posts on here tomorrow.

2 months until orientation!

It pained me to do it but I just withdrew from CCLCM today. 🙁

I loved my experience here and all the people that I met but I just felt a little bit more at home at Penn. Hopefully a qualified SDNer will end up taking my spot. 👍

I wish everyone at CCLCM and Case the best of luck and hopefully our paths will cross again in the future.

Did you just drop out of the 5yr MD college program? or is it the 4yr MD university program?

I be so excited about Case. Can't wait to get settled and started!

So how is Block 1, UP-ers? From my perusal of the curriculum, it looks like things start to heat up at Block 2.

Some people show their desire to go to Ohio by not going there. It's kind of like how in middle school, a guy who has a crush on a girl will pretend not to like her. Don't even try to tell me that you don't know what I'm talking about. :meanie:

I have not heard of anyone's apartments coming furnished. FWIW, I have a loveseat that I'd be willing to part with if you're interested. Price negotiable.

What is it about OSU that you think would make you least happy there? Yes, you can pay off loans, but you work hard for your money, and it's no fun seeing all the rewards of that work going to Sallie Mae for a decade or two. Also, you are going to have a challenging four years no matter where you go, and you will not get that four years back regardless. I just don't understand that argument, I guess, but maybe it's because I don't understand why you think you'd be significantly less happy at OSU.

For one, I'm not as big a fan of the large class size at OSU. This isn't a huge deal, but it's something to consider. Secondly, I have existing social networks outside of medical school in both Cleveland and Pittsburgh (I think it's important to have a social life outside of your fellow medical students so you can "get away" from time to time), and while it's possible to create that in Columbus, it takes work and a time, which will be at a premium. Also, while I generally like the city of Columbus, the whole city seems to be so dominated by OSU's undergrads. Lastly, and this doesn't have to do with happiness during medical school, OSU places a lot of their students into very good residencies, but not nearly at as high rates as Case or Pitt.

Specs for the computers for UP 2014 are posted. No prices yet. God, I am such a nerd.

EDIT: I took the liberty of making a picture for those so inclined not to click the link.

Good things:
- Windows 7 Ultimate (THANK GOD NO VISTA)
- NVIDIA 3100M, 512MB (Dells Only: Dedicated graphics card! Not integrated! Not too terrible, benchmarks)
- 15.6" Wide Screen HD+ (1600x900) - Sick resolution, my current lappy is 17" and only has 1440x900
- 1TB external HD + Wireless Mouse?

This post is for those concerned with their ability to play Starcraft II on the new Dells (NVS 3200M 512MB GPU):

Short Version: Easily plays Native SC2 on Medium

Most users comment that the SC2 Beta (not tuned and without proper drivers mind you) runs on medium settings with 40-50fps. When graphics are kept constant and shaders are run on low, most users had capped out at 100 fps. A discussion can be found at notebookreview.

For those interested, benchmarks can be found Here

FYI, heres a youtube of SC on three different graphics settings. The art scales really, really well, so even on medium / low, it sill looks great:

intra-medschool sc2 competitions would be great 😛 lots of hand-eye coordination practice

I agree. I hope it launches soon! Funny side note, the class of 2013 had a very in depth SC2 discussion in their thread last year. Blizzard sure takes their time -.-

From what I heard over Second Look, this is about right. Block 1 was described as a kind of "extended orientation" to both Case, and the Cleveland nightlife 😀.

I dig!

As far as SC2 goes...I never had SC1 but I beat every Command & Conquer game ever, so...might have to get into that.

...it doesn't look like that and hasn't for quite some time. (Edit: and to be fair, neither do the dell laptops)

That's a current picture of the Dell E6150. It also has a silver backing that isn't shown in the picture. However, I don't own a Mac, nor do my friends, so I haven't seen one in a while, sorry about the dated pic.

Oh, man. You mean the Dells still look like they did 10 years ago?😱

Note: you should not choose your laptop entirely on appearance!

The latitudes are supposed to be the "sleek business class" model for dell's notebook series. I agree, they look pretty square and ugly 🙁

"entirely" being the key word there? 😛

i'm pretty sure though that the only reason i'd ever get a mac would be so that i could get this:

Do we get to choose colors for the laptops? I want red.

I saw silver, blue and red backings on the Dell website, however, the red and blue backings cost more than the silver color. I'm assuming that we may be shoehorned into the silver as it doesn't lead to variable prices for people picking different colors.

On a side note, oddly enough, blizzard just announced the release date on SC II (July 27th), as seen on Kotaku and Multiplayer blog

Thinking either the MBP 13 or 15, Myuu you seem to be a mac-head what do you suggest?

Included magic mouse though for real? unsure if I wanna mess with that or put it on eBay right away. Same goes for the external HDD..

I don't think anyone would argue about the importance of having a social life outside of medical school--well, anyway, I wouldn't argue it. But FWIW, I think you are underestimating the amount of free time you will have to go out and do things outside of med school, and overestimating the difficulty of meeting people in a new city. IMO, living in a college town as a med student is the most compelling of the arguments you've made. If you're a little older and you're not into sports and bars, then it kind of does take away quite a bit of the available entertainment. That was one of the big cons of U Mich for me, although I have to say that Ann Arbor is a lot nicer than most other college towns I've seen. But I'm not convinced it should be a six figure dealbreaker. As for match lists, I don't think they're worth the paper they're printed on, because you don't ever know how far down their list people had to go, or even if they scrambled or matched into a different specialty than what they actually wanted to do.

Anyway, you know I wish you good luck no matter where you decide to go, and all of us will certainly be glad if you decide to come here. Let us know, ok?

True, I prefer internal and RAID'd HDD's though, but I'll shut up now. Which laptop will you be getting?

Has anybody gotten a good idea of where they'll be living yet? Just started my search..

I'm going MacBookPro...I figure it'll be worth the extra $.

I am paranoid that all the confirmation I got for my enrollment at Case is a congratulations e-mail from Christian! Is there any other paperwork to fill out?

But in any case, see you all in July =).

Well, I am a sucker for processing speed and screen real estate, so I'd say if you were planning on using this as a gaming rig in your spare time, go with the 15".

Caveats:
  1. I know nothing about the i5 processors.
  2. I have last year's 15" which indeed weighs a crap-ton
  3. I don't know the difference between those two nvidia cards, so I'm assuming bigger numbers are better, but given nvidia's history with laptop video cards, I wouldn't expect the stars out of these things.
  4. I do periodically make decisions based on how pretty something looks.
  5. Any of those machines will be fine for your day to day computing.
  6. A device weighing a metric crap-ton is just fine if you don't bring it to school every day. (I don't anymore)

As fopr the magic mouse, if you don't like it, you can try selling to one of your eager classmates or on ebay. I'd keep the external, though, as it's always handy to have an extra terabyte around, unless you've got plenty already... And let's be serious here. No one ever has enough.

anybody on the waitlist heard anything recently...like an acceptance???

Has anyone gotten off the CCLCM waitlist recently? CCLCMer or Myuu...what is the LAST DAY we can expect to hear back a final decision? Has anyone been REJECTED from the waitlist?

Thanks! :xf:

I'm not sure. I haven't talked to Dean Franco in a while. But as I told someone else who PMed me, the accepted people who got extensions should all be giving their final decisions around now if they haven't already. So some spots may open up soon.

CCLCMer or Myuu...what is the LAST DAY we can expect to hear back a final decision?
Whatever the first day of orientation is (beginning of July). If you haven't gotten off the waitlist by then, you should plan on going to one of your other schools.

Has anyone been REJECTED from the waitlist?
No, they won't send out post-waitlist rejections for another couple of months.

Good morning, Case fans! It's 67° and clear here in the Cleve. I'd take pictures, but I drove to Metro this morning and was thinking that it's probably not such a good idea to snap photos on the interstate when you're the driver.

I bank at Key Bank. They generally have a free ipod, GPS or $150 offer when opening a bank account with them. DO NOT open an account with them unless they have one of these offers. I opened one as soon as I moved to CLE and they offered a free ipod a week later.

I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to banking and whatnot, but how are we going to get direct deposits or do automated payments as students? Sounds like we're losing out unless we have jobs or our utilities bill sent to us. The value of the iPod Touch is going on a 1099-T, not sure how that impacts us directly but I want to deal with as little paperwork as possible.

Plus, $20/year for a debit card (even though it's waived first year)? 🙁 BoA is free, at least for me...

Nope, sorry for the confusion. I have not heard, no acceptance yet. This was my "I'm-really-really-anxious-and-foolishly-hopeful" emoticon.

Ahh, I wish I could stop staring at my phone....

In the past, they've counted bank transfers as direct deposits so I would just transfer funds from another account to this one and then back. As for 1099-Ts, unless you have another job during med school, it's not likely to affect your income tax returns. You should be well under the exception threshold.

And as for the annual fee, just keep the account open for the 6 months you have to keep it open, then close it. Then reopen another one when they have another offer next year. Rinse and repeat.

"Automated payments exclude Key Bill Pay, debit card automated payments, PayPal® transactions, and account-to-account balance transfers." 🙁

Opening extra accounts lowers credit scores right? Or does that only apply to credit cards?

The transfer that I recommended is not a balance transfer. It's a transfer of funds from a separate bank to your Key account. It works.

Opening extra accounts only affects your credit score if they actually run a credit check on you. Since you are only opening a debit account and they'll never actually have to extend credit to you, there's no reason for them to run a credit score. Just for future reference as well, opening a new credit card can help your credit score because it lowers your credit utilization and pulling your credit score once every six months or so for a new CC won't affect your score.

Ooh, thanks. I feel so stupid for asking these questions. It's ok, I once met a 20 year old who had never used an ATM before. Or had a bank account, for that matter. Apparently, the parents would send cash in an envelope to the person's college address every so often...

Iceman, do you have like, a blog I can subscribe to? Or a series of memoirs that describes your awesomeness in dealing with money? I'm not one to shy away from slickdeals and fatwallet, but your understanding of the financial system around you and how to utilize it amazes me.

Make a blog and post your misadventures / acts of brilliance. Hell, even a section on CodeBlue Case Wiki edited by you would rock.

Computer Prices are up and official, see the bottom of the chart. A tad pricier than last year for the Dells.

2edwjmf.jpg

The current price for the E6510 with all the same specs is: $2,273.00 (dell.com)
So, pretty decent deal from Case, however, theres a few bells and whistles I could do without. Also, I feel this model is really overpriced and overpowered consider its limited usage (no one needs a processor that beefy unless they are hardcore gamers / video editors / CAD users). I may have to keep my eyes open for a dell coupon and buy the Latitude myself. I'll keep you guys posted on prices.
