Honestly, if you're looking for the best bang for your buck (and I'm defining bang as reliability/gas mileage/trouble freeness) you're best off getting a used GM car that is the same as its Toyota counterpart. They're literally the same car but are cheaper since they don't have the Toyota name.

This includes:
Early 2000s Chevy Prizm (same car as the Corolla)
Pontiac Vibe (same as the Toyota Matrix).

I'm sure there are others that I'm unaware of, but these are the two I know. I had a 2002 Chevy Prizm and now have a 2004 Vibe. I've been super happy with both.

Is the Toyota name that great now, though? 😀

haha yea, my friend's corolla burned down, for no friggin reason. he was driving, then saw some smoke, so he pulled over. then the whole car caught on fire and flames went up 7 feet high and it just burned down by the side of the road. needless to say he was pretty traumatized

Does anyone who why case jumped up this year's rankings? Are they building some new building or got a huge grant?

not to burst your bubble, but it really didnt jump that much...the difference between 20 and 24 is 1 research point
though you can now say its a "top 20" school rather than "top25"...case has always been solid top 25 though

Myuu, LTTP, Iceman, et. al. What bank(s) do you use for convenience?
Key Bank here also.

Also, is Dave's really the best bet for groceries around town? I guess I take for granted the excessive number of supermarkets near me.
I mainly go there for convenience. Also because the manager's name really is Dave, and he is my buddy. As in, when I complained because the store had stopped carrying my favorite soda, he got some for me. He also keeps a supply of it in the back for me. I kid you not. I've got the in with Dave. 😀

Finally, what cellphone service to you use and where do you have trouble making calls?
I have Verizon. It was a problem using it at home with my old phone, but it works fine with the Blackberry.

I use Key Bank as neither Wachovia nor Wells Fargo exist in the state of Ohio. Plus there are branches all over (including in or very near CCLCM, with two ATMs inside UH).
Never mind the ATMs. There is a full Key Bank BRANCH at CCF that opened a few months ago in the new heart center. 👍

No signal for either device in the UH ER.
I got sporadic reception on my Blackberry in the UH ER.

are out! Got a notification message on my iApply account today. Combined with an amazing time at 2nd look, I'm like 95% sure that I'll be heading to Case come July 😀. Good luck to everyone!
I just got a merit scholarship. $25,000/year! It might've changed earlier, I'm not sure, I just checked iApply)

oops didn't see the post above mine. Yeah looks like they went out today!
GOT THE SAME THING!!!!!!!!!! I love this school!
Awesome, congrats guys!

Holy crap, I got a merit scholarship as well! That being said, it doesn't change my decision to attend CCLCM. Their response deadline is April 15 - I wonder how strange it looks on the UP side for me to withdraw immediately after getting a scholarship.
You are on a roll. Awesome!

I'm pretty sure they already know that the clinic has you in their web, so we'll probably survive your defection.
Bwahahaha. :meanie:

whats your source? can you post the full top 25 rankings pretty please?
Dean Davis (dean of the entire Case med school) sent us an email about the new USNWR rankings today also. From her email:

Dean Davis said:
At the State of the School Address, I shared with you the strengths of our core – education, prominence in basic science biomedical research, and national leadership in translational research. Today, I am happy to share proof of our momentum: the School of Medicine is now ranked 20th in research and overall of the nation's top schools of medicine according to the U.S. News & World Report's annual "America's Best Graduate Schools" issue. This is an impressive five spot increase over last year's ranking! Case Western Reserve School of Medicine is the only medical school in the state of Ohio ranked in the top 20.

Hey CCLCMer!

Maybe you've answered this already, but on average how many students are taken off the waitlist for cclcm each year? Just freaking out since its the 15th tomorrow. eek!
Hii~ I'm going to take a guess since I asked about this info for myself in the past. I'm going to guess 4-8 students. Don't quote me on this tho!~ Maybe CCLCMer has a better answer
Hmmm... I recall CCLCMer saying it was more like 15 that were taken off the list, but I guess we will give him the final word!
I think he said 18 were taken off last year, but because of the small class size that # could fluctuate. I wonder if that includes people who were invited to second look. hopefull not
See below.

CCLCMer will correct me if I'm wrong, but based on last year, I think you can expect about a dozen to be accepted off the waitlist.
That's about right based on last year. But again, the class is so small that it could be several more or less this year, depending on what the current acceptees do.

Good luck to those of you who are waitlisted. :xf:

LIES!

It was snowing just a tad bit and cold for Second Look!
It's 72 and sunny right now. I swear!

Sigh....I could do worse than quoting CCLCMer every post...
Wow, I never knew I was quotable.

?! 😛

they will definitely pull the people off of second look first.
Not necessarily.

think about it this way--how terrible would you feel if you were waitlisted, invited to second look, and then NOT pulled off the waitlist?
Unfortunately, this could potentially happen. Being invited to second look does not guarantee that you will be accepted before other waitlisted people who weren't invited.

Does anyone who why case jumped up this year's rankings? Are they building some new building or got a huge grant?
I have no idea. I've never pretended to understand USNWR rankings, and I've never understood why some people care so much about them.

What soda is that? I've been trying to get some cream soda around here, but no luck...

I said branch! I know you're keeping one for yourselves over there.:d

I always wondered if the guy in the suit with the "Dave" nametag was THE Dave. I guess he is!

Pepsi One. If you're nice to me, I might ask Dave if he'd look into getting some cream soda. I like cream soda too.

Hahaha. Pretty soon, it won't be necessary to leave CCF to go anywhere else. All they need at this point is their own Dave's. 😛

I always wondered if the guy in the suit with the "Dave" nametag was THE Dave. I guess he is!
I don't think he is THE Dave, because it's a local chain with a bunch of stores. But he is the manager at that store.

Edit: I looked up the history of Dave's supermarkets on their website. There are 14 Dave's in the Cleveland area. The chain was started in the 1920s, and so the original Dave is probably not even alive any more. The picture on that webpage is of Dave's son Burton with his sons (Dave's grandsons). It's cool that the chain is family owned and operated.

Heh, I was just thinking about Pepsi One today as I was having a Pepsi Max. Have you tried Pepsi Max? It's so good. Tastes just like regular Pepsi.

IF I'm nice to you? Who gave you a ride to pho last time... 😀

Is this a good time to point out that I also have a vehicle and live closer to CCLCMer than iceman probably does? Leverage fail!

If you're still in the Triangle, then I live closer to CCLCMer. And may I remind YOU who gave you a ride to pho last time? 😛 I'm really milking that for all it's worth.

Well, uh, what if I drive REALLY quickly?!?!😏

One ride to one lunch, like four months ago. You don't get to keep milking that indefinitely!

I'll have to try Pepsi Max. Just so you know, I went to Dave's after posting my last message, and I looked for cream soda. They do have it, diet and regular. It was only in cans though and not currently on sale. Next time it does go on sale, I'll be sure to get some. I also want to report that manager Dave was not on the premises at that time. Fortunately, there was a case of One sitting on the shelf. Waiting for me.

Is this a good time to point out that I also have a vehicle and live closer to CCLCMer than iceman probably does? Leverage fail!
Hmm. I've gone ice skating with you three or four times, and out to eat at Pho one time. Therefore, you do have more leverage by virtue of the fact that we've driven more places together.

iceman77_7, it does no good to have you live closer to me if we never go anywhere besides that one time we went to Pho. 😛

Arguably you might be milking it for more than it's worth.

Now that it's time to look for housing... CCLCMer, where do you live? The Shaker Square area seems fairly nice - how does it compare with Cleveland/Shaker Heights (I still can't tell in what way they are really different), and the University Circle (this is the closest to CCF, I'd imagine)? Any other notable places? Which areas are generally more expensive?

anybody know how many (CCLMC) people have dropped their acceptances so far?

Why does this thread have so many posts? lol, it has 1,000+ more than any other secondary thread.

Wait till my 5001 post...then it will be wicked awesome 😎

How long after 5001 do I wait for your 5001 to travel backwards in time to supplant it before declaring it a lost cause?:meanie:

apparently, case will not reaward the scholarships from ppl who withdraw, that kimda sucks 🙁

Too late, I've already gone way into the future, and thwarted your attempts to stop me from posting 5001th. Then I went even further into the future, quoted myself and posted it back here today.

Here's the proof: quoting myself from the Distant Future:

vc7777 FROM THE DISTANT FUTURE (the year 2011) said:
Hey Myuu, remember last year's thread when I was the 5001th poster just before the thread was closed? Man, that was awesome.

And while I am posting from the distant future: buy as much stock in the people who make Snuggies as you can! Once Lady Gaga started wearing them after the 2011 Music Video Awards exclusively (And I mean EXCLUSIVELY wearing snuggies!) they couldn't make them fast enough! In late 2011 they have so much captial they eventually take over Google, Microsoft, AND Rhode Island. Do it now. Thank me later.

I live in Cleveland Heights. Shaker Square is great though. It's convenient to both Case and CCF, and there are a lot of good restaurants, a grocery store, and a movie theater there. If I stayed here for residency, I would move there for sure.

Sorry, no idea.

We're just that awesome.😎
My thoughts exactly. 😀

So, since Myuu has been so good as to post lots of pics of the Case med school buildings, I have taken some pictures as well. This is my ode to spring in Cleveland. They were taken with my Blackberry, so I'm not promising high quality here.

Scholarship money helps retain the most desirable students. The waitlisters are undesirables, and they get what they get.

Edit: They get loans.

This has nothing to do with waitlisters. There was a group of students invited to apply for scholarships...if one gets one awarded but turns it down, they should give it to another qualified student. Every other school does this.

anybody know how many (CCLMC) people have dropped their acceptances so far?

I know during the three rounds of acceptances, 33 of them went out, indicating at least one did by then. Another guy I met at second look had also got off the waitlist, and recently myself and limondrop as well. While I have no real estimate on the true number, it's at least 4.

apparently, case will not reaward the scholarships from ppl who withdraw, that kimda sucks 🙁

I guess if the only purpose of the scholarships is to make students pick Case over other schools, reawarding them after May 1st doesn't really make much sense for them.

huh? what? why? so scholarship money is going to go to waste if someone withdraws?

Presumably Case just keeps it, I don't think they would consider it a "waste".

Sorry to hear about the scholarships guys :'(

Same. 🙁

I don't know, but I really hope that's true.

As far as I know, there's a fixed number of merit scholarships available. Like with acceptances, they overinvite acceptees to apply for them and then distribute however many they have to the most qualified applicants, keeping in mind that some will decline to matriculate. I don't think it's a matter of Case keeping the money, it's that there's no money left because they know some people won't take the merit scholarship.

Does anyone know what the "unit amount" for maximum subsidized+unsubsidized stafford loans this year will be at Case? I recall Christian saying that it's $32,500 per year at the interview, but I just verified online that the maximum limit for medical school students has been increased to $40,500 (8,500 sub+32,000 unsubsidized).

Should it match that new amount at Case this year or does each school have the option to offer less than the authorized max as their "unit amount"?

Thanks!

Edit: The Dental school at Case, for example, currently has the stafford max set at $38,500 per year ($8,500 subsidized). I'm hoping the $32,500 limit Christian mentioned during interview was just an outdated figure.

Are there any apartment complexes/rental companies we should be wary of? Bored at work so I'm doing some apartment searching.

I got accepted into the University Program and I've been looking at apartments in the Little Italy, Cleveland Heights (Coventry), and Shaker Square areas. Out of curiosity I've also looked at few studios and 1 BR downtown in the Warehouse District. I'm kind of drawn to the downtown area because I think this will be one of the few times where living downtown will be affordable for me. I am a little concerned about the condition of some of the living conditions (e.g., the Reserve Square fire that killed a resident, residents being mugged while in their "secure" parking lots) and commute time and was wondering if anyone knew someone who lives downtown and could give some advice.

I know of one person who does this, so I'll see if I can get his input on it for you.

I agree that this is the reason.

dingyibvs and everyone else, we've already discussed how because the UP overaccepts, a few people dropping out doesn't necessarily open up any actual seats in the class. They accept more students than there are seats available with the expectation that there will be some attrition down to the regular class size. Likewise, a few people declining their merit scholarships doesn't necessarily open up any scholarship funds that can be awarded to someone else. The school has already awarded more scholarships than they have funds for, again with the expectation of there being some attrition. It does suck that scholarships probably won't be available for the rest of you guys, but it's not because the school is hoarding the unclaimed scholarship money.

Hii~ on the note about scholarships.

On my interview day, I believe someone at Case answered this. They said if there is any money left over at the end, they DO give it out. They want to help their students as much as possible and they will absolutely not keep money if they can give it to their students.

=)

There is a possibility that they can offer you money later. I believe someone had that happen to them before that talked on interview day.

Thanks for the info! 👍

Since we have to decide by May 1st, though, and since money is a big part of the decision, what are we supposed to do?

i called case financial aid last week and asked when we should expect to get our financial aid packages. she said they're going to try to get them all out by april 30. since we hafta let them know by may 1 it's pretty disappointing that it hasn't come out yet, esp. after their great response time for admissions...

If financial aid is given out on the same timetable as last year, most packages should be emailed out this coming week, April 19th-23rd. Also, our laptop choices should be online soon, heres hoping for a decent graphics card and windows 7 instead of Vista.

Let's hope this doesn't happen. That really would be hugely disappointing, and really, unfair to people trying to make a decision.

When you get your financial aid package is dependent upon how early you got the financial aid "file complete" status through iapply. I called last week and the woman I spoke with said the same thing of "before May 1st". However, after asking her to be more specific, she said the earlier students got their materials in, the faster they would get their packages and to expect them by the end of the week (last week). This didn't happen yet so most likely today, tomorrow, etc. people will be getting these.

My file complete date is "3/30/10" and I had my stuff in way early so I'm praying I hear something either today or tomorrow.

For those of you who are struggling with financial aid and school decision issues, I suggest that you contact the UP admissions and financial aid offices directly. Explain your situation to them and find out what they can do to help. Everyone's financial situation is different, and these aren't the kinds of problems that med students or other premeds can help you solve.

Just got off the waitlist for CCLCM!! 😱

So excited but I think Dean Franco said that I only have about a week to decide on whether to take the offer or not. This would be easier if I didn't have Penn Preview this weekend because I could have just come down and visited CCLCM this weekend. Oh man talk about pressure decisions. I'm glad that I won't have to deal with these as a future doc...

EDIT:
I will also update this by saying that I wasn't invited to the 2nd look weekend which is why I'm even more surprised by the acceptance. I was almost completely decided on my med school choice but this throws it all out of whack.

congrats deaninja!🙂

but, does this mean that all of the acceptance calls for waitlisters have gone out? Are we out of the running if we didn't get a call today...

I wouldn't think so. Because CCLCM's class size is so small (32), I think that they never offer more acceptances than their class size. So if people who get accepted off the waitlist turn down offers, you other WLers will get a chance. At least that's what I was lead to believe.

congrats deaninja!

I thought that most of acceptance offers for waitlist would come out in May, so there is still hope right?

There is always hope until the morning of July 6th (when classes start). I, as well as probably many others, asked for an extension. Dean Franco granted me one until early-ish May, and I'm sure she granted others. She emailed me from her gmail account on her Blackberry less than a day after I emailed her through her CCLCM address. Props to the school for being so awesome and on top of things. 👍
