There is always hope until the morning of July 6th (when classes start). I, as well as probably many others, asked for an extension. Dean Franco granted me one until early-ish May, and I'm sure she granted others. She emailed me from her gmail account on her Blackberry less than a day after I emailed her through her CCLCM address. Props to the school for being so awesome and on top of things. 👍

You got an extension until early May? Could I ask what reasons that you gave to Dean Franco in order to get the extension? The extension would really help me out as I still haven't gotten financial aid information back from a few of my schools and haven't completed all of my second looks yet. It would also give me some time to visit CCLCM since I wasn't invited to 2nd look.

I basically just said I was 90% set on CCLCM (which is true!), but I wanted to attend a second look on X date at another school to make sure and I won't regret going to CCLCM. I also did the polite thing and said, if the extension can't happen, it's ok and I understand that we're running on a short time frame.

The extension is until 2 days after I attend that second look.

The horrible part of it all is that since I didn't have to say anything on April 15th, I've been second-doubting myself. CCLCMer can attest to this. I like certainty in my life and I want to be able to plan for the next 5 years.

hey all, long time follower of the forum, never posted though. Just wanted to say that I got the call from Dr Franco today! I was a waitlistee that was invited to second look. Good luck to all of you on the waitlist, I know how frustrating it is.. :xf:

Haha...nice entrance. That's style. 👍

Just got off the waitlist for CCLCM!! 😱

So excited but I think Dean Franco said that I only have about a week to decide on whether to take the offer or not. This would be easier if I didn't have Penn Preview this weekend because I could have just come down and visited CCLCM this weekend. Oh man talk about pressure decisions. I'm glad that I won't have to deal with these as a future doc...

EDIT:
I will also update this by saying that I wasn't invited to the 2nd look weekend which is why I'm even more surprised by the acceptance. I was almost completely decided on my med school choice but this throws it all out of whack.
Awesome, congrats! Feel free to PM if you have any questions. Also, you should join the c/o 2015 facebook group.

congrats deaninja!🙂

but, does this mean that all of the acceptance calls for waitlisters have gone out? Are we out of the running if we didn't get a call today...
No. As we've discussed before, further acceptances will be given out as currently accepted people withdraw. So whenever a spot opens up, it will be filled with someone from the waitlist, and that's when a call will go out.

I wouldn't think so. Because CCLCM's class size is so small (32), I think that they never offer more acceptances than their class size. So if people who get accepted off the waitlist turn down offers, you other WLers will get a chance. At least that's what I was lead to believe.
Exactly.

congrats deaninja!

I thought that most of acceptance offers for waitlist would come out in May, so there is still hope right?
See above.

Contact her and tell her exactly what you just said here.

So, make the decision to come here already and then you can plan away. 😛

Awesome, congrats! And I have to agree, best username in this entire thread. 👍

I should, huh? I'd never forgive myself if I didn't go to the other school's second look. (Just watch, it'll be bright and sunny and beautiful and I'll say "Uh...nope!" to Cleveland 😀) Freaked me out when I got an email from Denise (I think?) reminding me to choose by Apr 15th and I was like, wait wait I got the extension from Dean Franco! Don't give my spot away!

Is there any good, safe housing within blocks of CC? (10 min walk) Cost is of small concern unless it's outrageous like $2000 for a room.

Best username ever. Let's be friends. Is it supposed to have a Y?:soexcited:to you and everyone else who was accepted!
 thanks! friends sounds good! and in fact, I started with a Y, but it contained too many characters, so just cut it out, in retrospect could have just cut out the e and made it lolly...next time around!
Haha...nice entrance. That's style.
omg... the trolley ride...
Awesome, congrats! And I have to agree, best username in this entire thread.

Thank you, thank you! and hope to see you all in 2 and a half months!!

Oh, no worries, those letters get sent out automatically.

The closest housing is grad housing at Case. But it's more like a 15-20 minute walk. If you lived at the Triangle, you could either walk, or you could easily take the Healthline over, which would be a few minutes. You can buy a semester-long RTA pass for $75. As for cost of rent, this isn't CA. You could rent an entire house for less than $2000 a month.

Withdrawing from UP so hopefully it opens up a spot for one of you SDNers. Good luck to everyone. 👍

IHeartSleep, I just want you to know that it is 60 degrees here in Cleveland today. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and the choir of angels is singing. Just saying. 😛

Wow, the Triangle is really expensive, i.e. about what I'm paying in the Bay Area now. 😀 How is the graduate housing and is there any reason why most students don't actually live there?

Why is it warmer there than here? 🙁

i imagine it must be utter hell there right now for people with allergies though 🙄

Angry meat needs financial aid badly.

Angry meat is about to die.

OMG... a huge high-five for that one! Wow, that illicits grand memories of fist-fulls of quarters dumped into that game in the arcades...

Woohoo, new page! 😀

My understanding is that the Triangle is grad student housing. I've never seriously looked into living on campus, so I really can't tell you much more. You might want to try looking on the Case website for more info.

Because we have to have SOME nicer weather than you do, you know!

It hasn't been so bad. I'm a pretty allergic person, and I had a bad week or so, but I've been fine the last several days. It helps that it rained a little and brought the pollen down.

The Triangle is probably the most expensive apartment around Case and a horrible deal for the price you're paying. Spend a few hours looking around Cleveland and you'll save a ton of money and get a much nicer apartment. Even the Waldorf is a better deal than Triangle.

I don't know if I'd go quite that far, but you can certainly find excellent deals in Little Italy (and pretty much everywhere else) at much more competitive pricing.👍

(I'm staying in the triangle anyway.)

That's true, there is one apartment near Case more expensive than the Triangle, Park Lane Villa. But Park Lane Villa is 10x nicer than The Triangle.

😀

In terms of price, that place sounds like it would only be second to Mayfair. 😛

You're paying for the convenience of the campus location, pure and simple. And the school has a monopoly on grad student housing, so of course they can gouge people.

FluffyRabbit, it's really hard to search for apartments online. The best thing to do is to come to Cleveland and look around. There is a lot of housing available, to the point where you can just go building to building and call each landlord one after another (which is exactly what I did). I promise you won't have trouble finding a place!

If possible, can someone at Case check with the financial aid office about when they are sending out award letters? It is nearly one week from May 1st and yet I don't think anyone has received their letter yet. Last year's thread showed people getting award letters two days ago so I'm concerned as to what is going on.

If the previous entering class didn't receive their award letters until April 20, 2010, you might have some waiting to do... :meanie:

i haven't got any financial aid packet either....🙁

I got a letter about my scholarship, is that the same thing?

Does anyone know anything about "The Fayne"? Seems pretty reasonable, price wise, and it's a great location (.3 miles from the med school, according to google maps). I suspect it would have to be truly absymal inside though, eh?

Received an email this morning extending the decision deadline to 5/3 and stating financial aid packages would be delivered by 4/30.

Also, does anyone know if any apartment buildings come furnished, either fully or partially? I have to imagine some of the on campus ones do...

It has mice. Two of my friends live there and they are both moving out. Montlack Realty doesn't have good ratings.

Not to be confused with Montlack Management, which is decent I heard.

So heres my financial aid.

Yay.

Anyway, I'll get the "family contribution" in Grad plus, right? I can't really come up with 30k a year :O

You might want to check with them on that. The other schools I've received financial aid information from have actually enumerated the grad plus loans for me in the financial aid summary.

How did you find out about this? Email, or random iapply update?

It was emailed to me, heres the text in the email:

Congratulations on your acceptance to the School of Medicine. Attached you will find your Financial Aid Award Letter for the 2010-2011 school year.

We look forward to assisting you in paying for your medical education. Below you will find information on applying for the loans that are listed on your Award Letter.

If you decide to decline a portion or all of your loans, please indicate the changes in the space provided, then sign and return a copy of the award letter to the School of Medicine Financial Aid Office. You can decrease or decline the loan amount that is offered and we will update your award.

In order for your loans to disburse to your student account, there are a few items that need to be addressed. All students must complete Entrance Counseling and e-sign their Master Promissory Note (MPN) for their loans by following these instructions:

Step 1: Complete Entrance Interview Counseling at: www.studentloans.gov
Click on Sign In. You must login using your social security number, the first two letters of your last name, date of birth and FASFA PIN. Once you have logged in, click on "Complete Entrance Counseling". You can retrieve your FAFSA PIN if you do not know it.
Step 2: After Entrance Counseling, click on the "Complete Master Promissory Note" to electronically complete and e-sign the promissory note for your federal loans.
Step 3: If you are applying for a Grad PLUS loan, in addition to the first two steps, complete the PLUS application by clicking on "Start PLUS Application Process".
Step 4: If you are applying for a private loan, please go to https://www.elmselect.com/oll/SchoolLenderList/?schoolId=8473 to see a list of private loan lenders. Make sure you complete the entire application and e-sign your promissory note with that specific lender.
Step 5: We will certify your loan and the loan funds will disburse to your student account after classes begin in July as long as you have submitted all required documentation to our office, completed Entrance Interview Counseling (Step 1) and
e-signed your MPN (Step 2).

If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact the School of Medicine Financial Aid Office at 216/368-3666 or email at [email protected]

Thank you for your time and effort and we look forward to working with you.

Not to rub it in your face, Meat, but thank goodness for CCLCM's scholarship, otherwise my family would likely contribute the full CoA. With chronically ill family members & other factors that FAFSA doesn't account for, paying anywhere close to full price would be the dealbreaker for me, considering how I take as little money from them as possible. So I know it isn't much consolation to you, but if Case were the only school I got into, I'd be very, very sad financial-wise. Always someone worse off than you. 😛

hey, i got some case school loans, anyone knows what they're like? thanks!

Ya, I'm pretty sad, but the other school I was accepted to gave me nearly the exact same packet. Oh well. Maybe I should reapply next year

There are certainly lots of CA applicants, however, that only get into OOS schools or private schools, then are forced to spend 70k a year, so i don't feel too alone.

Edit: I went to sign up for a plus loan at the government aid website. This is the page I get (on multiple browsers). The "What you need" Link just describes what you need to fill out the application. The application itself is nowhere to be found. GG.

do you know how they calculate for grants and loans? is it need based or is it merit based? are they renewed or is it just a one time thing? if it's not need based then isn't it the same as a merit based scholarship?

question about CCLCM financial aid...

since the clinic covers the full cost of tuition, do you still have access to subsidized/unsubsidized stafford loans for student living/food expenses? if not, what are the graduate loan options?

i had this problem in my undergrad where i got a full-tuition merit scholarship but had to take out a small amount of private loans to cover the cost of living, since the school could not offer me stafford

im pretty sure they are need-based with a small amount of merit-based scholarships available by invitation only.

Yea, that's what I thought too, which is why I wonder why your EFC is higher than Meat's but you're still getting grants/loans?

You will get stafford loans (8500 subsidized max/the rest in unsubsidized) up to the cost of attendance, I believe. I think the difference is that now, you're a graduate student and therefore independent, so the school isn't going to default to your parents and ask for their contribution.

Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone...

CCLCMer, speaking of all these $$ issues, Liz Myers gave us our FA during second look. At the bottom of the first page, it says that "Instructions regarding the next steps will be emailed to you in May 2010. Please complete the enclosed Allocation Acceptance letter after you receive instructions." The second page, the Allocation Acceptance Letter, at the bottom says "Please return this form as soon as possible to Denise..."[their bolding, not mine]

....What should I do?

IHeart,

I noticed that too at second look. I wanted to take mine home to discuss with my wife anyways, so I didn't return it right then (still haven't). But if you recall, they suggested you sign it right on the spot if you were comfortable. I suspect the 'return ASAP' instruction is more in line with what they intended. I plan on calling tomorrow for further clarification anyways. Hope this helps.
