Man. Now we have like 4 months to wait.
Been sending good vibes to Duke since late sept.

omfg. i got the deadline mixed up with johns hopkins!! amazingly i was still able to access the secondary, so i just wrote five totally last minute essays then hit submit, LMAO. guess they weren't so bad after all!

i'm debating whether i should call them tomorrow, fess up, and beg for mercy, or just keep quiet and hope they don't kick my app out of the queue. any thoughts? :\

and for the record, i didn't actually have all summer 😛 i'm finishing up my PhD thesis and i had to wait until my summer committee meeting to finalize med school plans, so my AMCAS didn't go in til late August. i did have all autumn though. my excuse is that my experiments blew up in my face and i had to troubleshoot if i still wanted to graduate by matriculation time.

/faceroll, faceroll

Does anyone know which building we have to meet in on the morning of interview day? I know the Duke PAS dashboard says the admissions office, but looking at the map on Duke's site I only see one and I believe it is the undergrad admissions office (not sure if there is a separate one for the med school -- I don't see another admissions office on the medical campus.)

Is it the one where Campus Drive and Flowers Drive come together?

Thanks in advance!

Honestly I don't think they'll consider your app either way, unfortunately. 🙁 It's unfortunate, but I guess you can focus on knocking out your remaining essays now.

That is undergrad admissions only. Med school admissions is in the building labeled Hospital South (Davison).

The simplest way to get to the office in my opinion is to go in through the main door which faces the quad (at 90 degree angles to Old Chem and Soc Psych), then go down one level by the stairs on the right after you enter (yeah, it's in the basement). Go right after going down the stairs, then basically stay straight until you get to admissions (will be on your right). At least I think this is correct; give yourself time in case you get lost, Duke South is a confusing place.

Thank you so much for that. I probably would have ended up at the UG admissions office otherwise!

np. Yeah, it's not really clear what they mean when they said "Duke Clinics" in the interview invitation email, but that refers to Duke South. Nor do they indicate which entrance is "Duke Clinic's main entrance," but it's the one I described (I think)

Going to undergrad admissions would have been quite an awkward disaster for you haha...

Haha, indeed. But maybe they've seen it before -- someone all dressed up in a suit looking like they don't know where they are "ah, another interviewee for the medical school"

Either way, I wouldn't want to be late. Any other tips for interview day? I've already checked out the interview feedback page.

It's a pretty standard interview day, all the obvious advice applies. One thing I would do if you have time (and the weather is good) is look around the main campus. The med school/clincs/hospital is part of the overall main campus, and it's a pretty cool place. Med students kind of hang out everywhere, in fact, I was in the main library when a med student saw my folder and asked me if I was interviewing, and we talked. If you're interested in any of the dual degree programs (eg MPP, JD, MBA; schools labeled Sanford/Rubenstein, Law, and Fuqua, respectively on the map) as part of the 3rd year curriculum, it's very possible to go and check out that particular school, they're all within a few minutes walking of the medical center. If you're a college basketball fan, Cameron Indoor is also within walking distance, and they have a bit of a museum in there. Of course, checking out the inside of the chapel is interesting as well. They have an art museum, but that's a bit of a walk (Nasher on the map).

If you really have a lot of time and want to check out UNC Chapel Hill (no idea if you might be interested), there is a free shuttle over there and back. Takes about 20-25 minutes each way, so that would only apply if you are like staying another night.

Sorry, none of this really applies to the interview itself, but as I said, it's a standard interview and really depends on your interviewer.

Have a good time! :luck:

Oh man, Duke wins for quickest comeback!

Submitted on Sunday right before midnight, interview invitation at 3:30 AM today.

congrats! Their sandwiches are good, I'd recommend the one on the croissant🙂

so, did most people with interviews get the immediate email like 10 hours later? doesn't seem like i got that, so now i'm wondering if there's much chance...

Is anyone else finding themselves completely obsessed with Duke Med?
My friend and I were talking about I think the longer you wait, the more obsessed you become. Uh oh lol😀

some people got invites weeks or months out, and for some it only took seconds. it all depends on the speed of the reviewers that your application gets sent to

Yes. It's the only school that loves me, that sees beyond my flaws to my wonderful MCAT score.

If it rejects me, I am going to curse it's name though.

Just received an interview invitation this morning! Unfortunately they are booked solid until Feb so I am scheduled for 2/19.

I submitted my secondary on 9/7/09 but I don't remember when they considered me 'complete'. It was at least on/before 10/20 because I checked it that day and PAS said I was complete.

I'm very excited!

Btw, someone mentioned on here earlier that Duke only has regional interviews left. Not true- I was able to sign up for an on-campus interview yesterday.

^I was afraid of the same thing after I read somewhere on here, but it looks like they have lots of slots left in February.

Seriously?! When I logged on to schedule my interview, the only dates that I could click kept saying they were full and there was nothing clickable in the February calendar. When I called their office to see what was up, the lady who answered told me they no longer had on-campus spots open and that I'd have to schedule with one of the other options.

I just called, but nobody answered so I left a message.

Perhaps they recently opened up more spots?

EDIT:

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. They indicated to you that a regional interview would be just as strong as an on-campus interview, so you'll be fine. Also, you can think of it as a way to save money on the trip... have a regional interview, and if accepted, then go to Second Look.

I'm not worried about having a lesser chance, but I want to check out the school, meet students, etc. I'm not too far away either, so money really isn't an issue.

If you can get an on-campus interview, i highly recommend it. Meeting the students, Dr. Armstrong, and the other interviewees was amazing.

Haha yeah, I've been told a number of times now how awesome Dr. Armstrong is. Honestly, I'll be pretty disappointed if they don't let me reschedule for an on-campus interview, since it was someone in the office who told me that was no longer available. It's a pretty reasonable request, I think.

yeah, def try. at the very least it will show that you care

I emailed Richard Wallace, and he was able to reset my interview scheduling options. What a cool guy. I'm down for 2/18, now the hard part: deciding what sandwich I want...

My Saturday morning regional interview:

Slept through the alarm at 6am, threw on a suit (trying to look professional at 6am on a Saturday), 20 min dash down the freeway to LAX, 10 min shuttle ride, 20 min in airport lines (damn thanksgiving travelers), 10 min in line for a peppermint mocha (I had to...), 1.5 hour flight to Sacramento, 12 min cab ride downtown, 60 min interview (loved it!), hitched a ride with the interviewer back to the airport (seriously), 1.5 hour flight back to LA, 10 min shuttle ride, 30 min in traffic up the freeway, back home by 4pm...whew!

Haha, I thought a regional interview would be easier...but at least I didn't have to take another day off from work! Go on campus if you get the chance 🙂 Although my interviewer was going to buy me lunch if I hadn't already eaten...who knows, could have even topped those sandwiches...

I don't know how we can get interviews at Duke and the cold shoulder from almost everyone else.

It just goes to show what a great job Duke does in admissions I suppose.

I'm tellin you, turkey + cucumber crossaint! That sandwich turned the tide from me liking Duke to me loving Duke.
My med student host actually told me about the fancy pansy lunch options the night before...how they pretty much sealed the deal lol.
I did really appreciate the fact that their veg option wasn't just a carcass of the regular meat one....it was delicious!

We're talking about interview lunches. Not meant to be "extraordinarily helpful".

You posted what you ate. You didn't even say if it was good. Do you really think anyone cares what neuronc ate for lunch?

I have a regional interview coming up, and I have no idea what to expect. Was it formal like a regular interview or more laid back? Where did you arrange to meet your interviewer?

The regional interview was definitely a different experience. We sat down outside in at some tables at the mall...which made for a very different setting first, of all, with some crazy woman screaming obscenities behind us...and it did seem a bit more laid back. I got along with my interviewer great so it just felt like a long conversation, asking questions back and forth and talking about what interested both of us. I enjoyed it a lot more because I felt like he really got a better feel for me as a person and as an applicant through the longer (1hr) interview. But definitely still treat it as a full interview--look your most professional, and spend maybe even more time thinking about your responses, since he/she will have more of a chance to really roll through the questions with you, and you will have more of an opportunity to elaborate. Also, I think more time was devoted to asking your interviewer questions than normal (I got to really rattle off my list, which was great cuz I think I learned a lot more about my interviewer and the school through his candid answers), since they're assuming you didn't get the tour/background speech on the school. Good luck, and watch out for crazy mall people 🙂

What is the post interview acceptance rate here? I hear they interview over 1000 and accept ~200? I'm not sure if these figures are accurate so just wanted to check

Interivew around 700 and accept about 200..maybe a little less than 200.

Is this what they say on their interview day?

According to US News, for the class entering in Fall 2008: 5201 applied, 1077 interviewed, 218 were accepted, 100 enrolled.

my interview is coming up, so i don't know exactly. However, this is what MSAR say. BTW, i thought US News only gave rankings, percentage accepted - no? do they also list number of interviews? I was looking through a copy at the bookstore a couple of weeks back and didn't see the number accepted. Is it online?

I saw earlier some people said there were still spots available in February. I just got my interview invite, and I don't think there are any more dates open, unless I'm doing something wrong. There are random Wednesdays I can click on, but they are all full. I just wanted to check to be sure there isn't a chance of getting an on campus interview. (I actually go to Duke currently, so it is kind of ridiculous to do a regional interview.)

The MSAR is a year ahead of US News in terms of data ('09 vs '08), so they might have lowered how many people they interview starting last year. I have an online subscription to US News; they give details for those who matriculated, as opposed to the MSAR doing stats for those accepted.

As of 5:15 on Friday, there were 4 spots open on 2/17 and 7 spots open on 2/18. They might have filled up, although it's possible there's still spots and the website just isn't showing them properly (that's what happened to me when I tried to schedule it last Monday). Maybe check in the next few days and see if it changes. If it doesn't and on-campus spots are indeed all gone, regional interviews take a while to set up anyway, so you're not missing out on anything by delaying.

So I... actually got an interview invite. Now I'm REALLY facerolling over whether or not I should fess up about the late secondary submit and get it off my chest but also potentially fall on my sword, or just wait and see if they notice it themselves and then explain if they do. Gah! I wish you people hadn't told me the deadline was the 15th. I would've never known! PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY! LOL

I'm not sure what you think your obligation here is; you did nothing "underhanded" in any way. They can see when you submitted your secondary, right? You can ask them about it if it makes you feel better, but I'm not sure what you're feeling guilty about here... Schools make up their deadlines, and they can make exceptions to them as well. Am I misreading this??

I do not think that you did anything wrong at all...
If they ask you directly, you should tell the truth... but I dont think that is the case here. and congratulations on your interview invite. Duke was a very pretty school!

Yeah basically, it's their bad...they said that access to the application would be locked...and it wasn't. So if they did that intentionally, then they clearly didn't mind a few people sliding in after the deadline, and if they did it by error, the error was theirs and they clearly have decided not to punish you for it. Just be happy...if they wanted you enough to overlook the missed deadline thing--which I'm sure they can see--then you should feel pretty damn good.

Yea, I'm not sure it would be wise to say you didn't know about the application deadline whether they ask you about it or not. It suggests 1. you are not interested in the school and 2. you are not on top of things.
