really meh stats (30R/around 3.4ish) from Cali. I got the secondary, guys don't give up, I really think they look at your extracurriculars!!!

I was rejected post-secondary. For a school of such low ranking, it's rather surprising how early I was outright rejected.

as for the comment that this school looks at ECs, this is true; however, you must have the stats to reach the point where they even consider your ECs.

OneMCATAway, did they "advise" you to retake or was it an ultimatum or something? If you got the secondary, you obviously make their screen, which means they will look at your whole app. If you are confident in other parts of your app, I would submit it anyways...

Just got a pre-secondary rejection. 31, 3.3 BCPM 3.5 cumulative, OOS (new york) verified early june, diverse ECs. guess they dont want me. GOOD LUCK GUYS!

i dont like this school anymore, does everyone who got the "recommended retake" email, plan to retake? i am not re-taking this year and now i donno if i should do the secondary?!

just got screened out from evms..=( 28 and 3.44 sci is cut off =(

looks like im prolly gonna end up in carribean..since im instate =(

Well if it makes yall feel better, I got rejected too. I knew it from the start but it's worth a shot.

the seriously recommended to retake! its kinda stupid cuz if they didnt like it why did they send me the secondary? ok im not complaining thanks evms =) i think im gonna go ahead and apply since i have extra money sitting around and cant find a better way to use it-NOT :annoyed:

lets hope my EC's help me out or im setting myself up for an early rejection! on another note i probably wont have time to finish this one so probably a later rejection 😛

If I were you I would definetely apply. A screened school is a screened school...which means they obviously liked something about you to send you one. Take the time out and apply. I would give preference to this one over any privates that send it to everyone.

Yeah I just got a secondary with a science GPA under 3.3, OOS, so I think they look at the whole picture - no cut offs - theres still hope!

hey you should probably let them know you plan to retake. if not, you will automatically not move forward. i called and the woman told me my application would be put on hold if i retake mcat but would not advance forward if I did not retake. i dont see why they call the retake a recommendation if it is a requirement for them.

ahh then why do they send you the secondary? im not retaking this year but even if i did i wouldnt want my application to be on hold till then.. should i bother with the secondary?.. stupid mcat :bang:

Ignore my previous advice. From reading this forum, I think going forward/landing an interview with this school is contingent on you retaking. In that case, don't bother paying the 70 bucks for a school that has already made up its mind.

i felt the same way, noting initially in my email (before calling to clarify on the issue) that I would be fine with my application reviewed with the current non-competitive mcat score. she told me my application would not be considered anymore. it was either not retake and basically be rejected or retake and be put on hold. I don't know why they sent me a secondary if my app didn't please them anyway. could've saved themselves an email lol

in conclusion, only do secondary if you are going to retake. otherwise, do something better with your time and money, like another secondary

Question on behalf of EVA applicant, VA college, but not VA resident:

Is there a GPA and/or MCAT cutoff for in state applicants? How about OOS?

Thanks folks!

i was so ready to mail this one in until i saw the VA resident form and realized my voter registration card was no where to be found.. had to order a new one. i hope submitting a little later wont hurt my chances

Someone posted the cut offs as 28 and 3.44 sci is cut off, seems reasonable as the ones rejected so far on SDN are below one of those stats. A 28 mcat or lower gets you the please retake mcat email, 29+ gets no such email.

Is the 3.44 science a confirmed screen, or is that an assumption based on those who have been rejected?

Just wondering because I received the secondary and the email to retake the mcat (which I had already done and am waiting on scores). I was going to wait to do the secondary to make sure my score is 29 or higher, but my science gpa is 3.31, so is this all a mute point?

I don't know if it is the same for your state as mine but I had to provide voter registration and I didn't have my card so i called the voter registration office and they basically printed off a face sheet for me and faxed it to me. it says im registered and the school said it would work...worth a try...

No, as i posted above i got a secondary and have below a 3.3 science gpa. they must look at everything - i'm not urm or anything.

nothing is confirmed, just assumptions. The only thing I feel is close to 100% certain is the mcat screen. 29+ = ok <28 = retake email.

i got a secondary with lower than 3.44....and last year somebody with a higher gpa/mcat than me didn't get a secondary, which I would assume means they look at EC's.

Great, thanks!

To defend the GPA number, at any rate, last year I e-mailed them to ask why I didn't get a secondary and they told me the same number. They "look for a science GPA of 3.44 or better."

hey..when i called they told me they look for 28 and 3.44 science..those are the numbers they use..but maybe they make exceptions to some ppl not sure!

Or maybe its one way or another? Perhaps if you meet one of the two numbers, they will look into you further. Maybe falling below both numbers = pre-secondary rejection?

then why the mcat re-take if that's what they are looking for?! 😕

emm... may I jump in? So I'm reapplying to EVMS this year and I'm wondering how much I should change my "essays." I already have a completely different personal statement on the primary, but my responses to these these short answer questions/essays are pretty good... should I just rewrite them anyhow?

I'd change some stuff, since they do seem pretty picky. Out of 5 (I think there are 5 essays?) I'd try to rewrite 2, edit/modify 2, and leave one the same that you really like.

Just an idea.

Maybe that strict screen is out of state? I have less than 3.44 BCPM and wasn't screened out. My MCAT is above 28 though, and I'm in state.

So there is no status page apparently, they said they send out a postcard or something when you are complete via snail mail (id assume). The lady i called was really nice and checked my status on the comp for me. FWIW i got my 2ndary on 7/6, sent it out on 7/8, and apparently today they got it in the mail and im complete and ready for review.

thanks for the info elijah.

and man, this school is harsh..

anyone know where i can find current/past EVMS medical student feedback/reviews/opinions of the school?

--nevermind, got it

Did you guys send 2 different pictures, or 2 copies of the same?

So this issue has already been discussed briefly, but I am interested in getting input from all of you who have already submitted secondaries to EVMS..... Do we really have to fit our essays into the boxes provided? I did a word count, and it looks like the boxes can only hold approximately 150-175 words. Do they expect us to answer these prompts clearly in the limited space or am I having problems with the pdf? By the way, I have a mac... I don't know if that could be the cause of any problems. I really appreciate any input. Thanks 🙂 👍

I tried on both a mac and pc and you have to fit them in the box, regardless. If you use preview on mac it allows you to fit more in the box just fyi 😉. Maybe like 15 words more or so not a lot.

Thank you🙂 I got everything to fit, but it was a struggle.

Sorry but I can't seem to find the status page, I went back to website where the secondary was? Can someone point out where it is? Thanks!

2 tries: mcat-- 26R

GPA: 3.5
Science: 3.3
In State

are my chances poor?
should i retake the mcat a third time?

with an MCAT like that, it would be very hard to get in anywhere period let alone EVMS, id retake.

I would make sure (if you are going to retake) to address what your problem was the first two times. Since you are instate, I believe a 29+ will for sure get you attention with that GPA.

i'm not sure what to do though. i already submitted my primaries to 18 schools and received secondaries from some other schools. how can i ask schools to wait longer for my third mcat score

I already posted this in your thread asking if you should retake, but I really wouldn't rush in to taking it a third time. Take your time and really prepare until you're scoring solid 30 something scores on practice tests if you are set against going to DO school. Taking it a third time and doing poorly again will really hurt your chances, whereas taking your time and strengthening your app for a year could do nothing but help.

i posted this elsewhere, but because i'm feeling somewhat neurotic at the moment:

what should i do though? i already submitted my primaries to 18 schools with letters of rec and everything. i don't think i can ask for letters of rec from the professors again, and i don't want to go through the hassle of rewriting my personal statement.

my ideal situation would be to retake the mcat in august and somehow have the schools i applied to wait for my third mcat (which i haven't talked about in my primaries). i'm not sure if that's even possible though.

i could apply to DO schools, but since i already applied to several MD schools, is it possible to simultaneously apply to the DO schools there as well? even after i've already applied to their MD programs?

wait a year and retake in january then reapply in june. would it count as reapplying though if i rescinded my application somehow midway through the process?

I don't know much about DO schools. do most schools that offer MD programs offer DO programs too? or are those schools generally separate entities? should i go ahead with my low tier MD applications? or somehow rescind them to reply fresh somehow next year?

If you applied next year it's not like your letter writers would have to rewrite their letters or anything, you can just ask them to upload the same ones. You don't have to rewrite your PS either if you don't feel that it's necessary.

It would be possible to retake in August if you feel that's your best decision. I would just let all your schools know through email or phone that you'll be retaking and they'd probably wait for your score before reviewing your file (which would put you at a disadvantage since then you won't be complete until september).

I believe there is only one MD school that has a DO school too and that's in Michigan. Most DO schools are their own separate entity. I would search around this forum and google DO schools so you can make an informed decision about whether you want to go that route and apply to them or not.

If you wait a year to apply that would be reapplying but it's not like that really hurts you as long as you've made your app stronger (aka improved the mcat score). I was in a similar situation to you last year (submitted the AMCAS then got a mid-20's mcat score back in early august) and I decided to wait a year and retake the mcat in the spring. I'm glad I didn't rush into it and now have a pretty solid score to apply with. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Been stalking this board as I will be applying here next year. I know several students at EVMS who have 25-26-27 MCAT scores; however their respective GPAs are more like 3.6 sci and 3.7 cum.

Couldn't hurt to try this year but I would recommend a retake.

I could be wrong, but I think if you have letters of rec uploaded onto Interfolio, it keeps them indefinitely. I think some med schools let you use the same letters if you're reapplying, too. If you don't have luck this cycle, couldn't hurt to get a new letter and still keep the old ones.

Just got the confirmation postcard...FINALLY
i wish they made the postcard more noticeable...i was about th throw away all my mail cause it looked like junk then i see EVMS 🙁
