Handwriting is not the typical route but I've explained why it might help in my above. Schools like GW probably get hundreds of these typed one-page generic LOI. Pre-interview hold is a tough place to be(compared to post-interview hold). Adding character and uniqueness to your application can help you stand out from the piled. My own 2cents 🙂.

i think the time and annoyance spent reading someone's handwritten note would overshadow any "boy this is unique" sentiment (which i don't think would exist in the first place).

Like I said, if you don't have a good handwriting, don't handwrite or find someone that does.SDN adcoms like njmd have stated that some of the best "thank you" notes they've received were the handwritten ones.

Anyway, I'm not going to turn this thread into handwrite vs. typed. Best wishes to the two posters inquiring.

Edit: A good LOI can be about one solid paragraph. It gets straight to the point and makes for a quick read. No need for a two-page fodder.

thank you note =/= LOI. and even if you have good handwriting, it's a pain in the butt to trudge through as compared to something typed. the end.

on hold for re-review at a later date 🙁🙁

Your chances are slim because they have 13,000 applicants. Right now there are thousands of students with great stats on hold(if SDN is any indicator). So GWU has a large pool to choose from and that is what affects your chance. I will advise you to write a strong letter of interest. Highlight what you like about GW, your love for clinical medicine, the uniqueness and diversity you bring and why GW is right for you. Don't email it. Hand-write it.

Hey! I have a 26 MCAT and 3.5 science/non-science GPA, and I was just interviewed last week. This is just to show you that GW does not just look at GPA and MCAT.

I have a lot of other parts to my application that probably caught their eye including (just to name a few) an MPH, international experience volunteering for Operation Smile, and a co-authored paper an research I did as an undergrad.

I can't tell you want your chances are of getting into GW post-interview, with scores like mine, since I obviously haven't heard of their decision yet, but I can tell you that there is hope of getting an interview and having your time to shine. With that said, there will be a ton of schools that will reject you because of your MCAT score, but there are others that will look beyond that and see the potential you have to be a great physician, so don't lose hope! MegaProjectile's advice is great. Good luck 🙂

I just got an interview invitation!! I'm from NJ. What's the best way to get around there? Is there any student housing available for 1-2 nights? I'm planning to come 2 days earlier and look around the campus and the city. I'm debating whether I should fly or drive there (driving is 4 hrs and I'll have my car vs flying is about 1 hr and I won't have my car).... Can anyone share their interview experience?

I haven't interviewed there but I have visited DC a few times and driving around there is not fun. I would definitely look into flying and getting around on the metro, unless you want to save some cash, then you can brave the streets of DC.

Definitely fly, but fly into Reagan. Parking in the city costs a fortune, is difficult to find, and driving is stressful. Fly into Reagan, take the Metro to GWU. Stay at a hotel near the campus. It's in a really fun area of the city. Congrats on your interview!

Just got the email!

SO PUMPED

congrats!!! so it wasn't necessarily 6-8 weeks for you then? also, do you mind sharing some of your stats... or a range? Your mdapps profile isn't working for some reason 🙂

still waiting... if we had an early interview should we expect to hear something today?

Whoa, congrats to everyone who just got acceptances! Mind sharing when you interviewed? Was it early September? I was completely expecting to be waiting >8 weeks to hear from GW.

accepted.🙂 interviewed the third week of september.

What happens next for those who have interviewed, but not yet been accepted? Denials? Trickling acceptances every week or every month the rest of the fall?

Probably the best thing to do would be to call the office and ask "I was wondering if all the acceptances for the first wave of interviewees have been sent out? If so, having not received an e-mail, can I assume that I've been waitlisted or rejected?"

Of course...I don't have the stones to know for sure. Who wouldn't choose blind hope over certain doom? lol Hope and pray... but if you do call, let us know what they say! I'm trying to work up the courage to call... Good luck everyone!:xf:

I saw those good words today. Congratulations you have been accepted.....🙂 I am so stoked and thankful to God. My girlfriend is freaking out and its still sinking in for me. I really love this school! Hopefully everything works out and I end up here. Goodluck to everyone else, this is really surreal right now! Interviewed mid september by the way.

Hey guys, I didn't get an email, but I just checked my status page and this is what it said:
The Committee on Admissions is pleased to inform you that you have been selected as an alternate for the first year class of the program leading to the Doctor of Medicine degree entering in August 2010. A final decision has yet to be made regarding an acceptance.

So looks like I'm waitlisted... I thought it was an acceptance the way that it started. Oh well... we'll see how I play this. Depends what happens with other schools in the next week or so. I think GW has a lot of WL movement so I might try to get off the list. The status they gave me kind of gives me hope...

AAAnd here's the email that just came:

Dear XXX:

The Committee on Admissions is pleased to inform you that you have been selected as an alternate for the first year class leading to the Doctor of Medicine degree entering in August 2010. A final decision has yet to be made regarding an acceptance.

You should be very proud and recognize that your selection as an alternate has been made from a large group of very talented applicants. Moreover, many alternates are ultimately offered acceptance to this program. This typically does not occur until Spring.

Recognizing that this waiting period may be difficult, we sincerely wish to make communication as smooth as possible for you. During this period it is important for you to use [email protected] to keep our staff updated with your information.

Any new graded coursework should be submitted when available. Please be aware that all those accepted into the class must submit satisfactory completion of all required coursework and final official transcripts by July 15, 2010.

We greatly appreciate your interest in our School of Medicine. Please contact us with questions and concerns.

Sincerely,

Diane P. McQuail, M.A.
Assistant Dean of Admissions
Chair, Committee on Admissions

I'm kind of shocked by my alternate list decision. My stats are significantly higher than their stats and I said what I thought they wanted to hear.

Luckily, I still have more interviews. I really thought I would be a shoo in at this place but it seems I was wrong.

Guess I won't have to pay the $200 deposit right now. I suppose that's a plus. 🙄

Congrats to those who got accepted. I interviewed the third week of September by the way.

That is the most congratulatory wait list placement I have ever read. At least they're nice about it.

Yeah, I feel like I was also very qualified numbers-wise, but I'm not shocked to be on the waitlist. It's about more than stats, and the applicant pool might have been stronger this year than it has been in the past.

haha I know. The way it is worded toward the end definitely seems to encourage keeping them updated, and I think that if I were to show enough interest, I would have a good chance to get off the waitlist. How hard I try really depends on what happens to other schools that I liked more, though...

GW is a really good school though, congrats to everyone who got in!

I received that email too earlier today. Do any of you know how many students are placed on the GW alternate list? And how many of them end up getting accepted? It doesn't look like we're ranked, but if anyone has more info please let me know.

What is the status page url? my computer crashed so i lost all of my bookmarked pages!

just interviewed.. place is top notch.. congrats to everyone accepted

Greeeeeaaaaaat. I was an alternate all last year until August and now I get to continue where I left off. I agree it's one of the nicest worded waitlist letters of any school but it is also coming from a school that seems to never reject post-interview. Last year we all believed that there was going to be mass movement because of the nice letter and the issues with probation but it really wasn't that big. It kind of feels like getting a nice rejection when asking someone out on a date, where you end up thinking oh they never really said 'no!' 😛

Anyways, I've loved this school for a long time and I really do hope that all of us that feel the same get in! :xf::xf::xf:

Was any one rejected? What do they do accept 1, waitlist 1, reject 1 for every three interviewees? Is it 1 in 4 or 1 in 3 admitted? I have read both on this site, but don't know if that includes waitlist movement?

Traditionally, how much waitlist movement is there and does that not happen until April or so?

Waitlist movement at GWU is pretty variable each year from what I gather. I feel like they waitlist most of the interviewees. In the spring they send a "still interested in GW?" email, where you have to let them know you're still interested in being on the waitlist. In the past, some people got an e-mail saying that they were in a "pool" that was very "fluid" with no rankings, and others got an e-mail saying that they were essentially top priority. However, getting the "pool" e-mail doesn't preclude you from getting off the waitlist by any means.I don't know if this information applies for this year though! In the past, most of the movement happened during May-June.

Just keep telling them you're interested, and stay active 🙂 I hope everyone who loves GWU gets in!! And if you get accepted to another place you like more, please withdraw so that us alternate-listers get a chance 🙂 Good luck, everyone!!! :xf::xf:

Speaking purely from my experience and what I've seen while desperately waiting in 2008-2009, nobody has ever gotten a post-interview rejection. I think last year the consensus was 1:3 are accepted, 2:3 are alternates. Movement does vary but it looks like in the past couple of years its not much more than a handful of sdners at least. If you are interested, you gotta keep reminding them about yourself but all I'm saying is avoid being in the situation I found myself in summer if this turns out to be your only choice. I don't mean to be a downer but omg I cannot stand this wait! Movement traditionally starts around June and I believe we got the letter asking if we are interested in remaining on their WL sometime in the middle of May. Don't expect to hear much until then.

So, people have only gotten acceptance offers and alternate list notifications so far right?
Is there anyone who has gotten something saying that their file is still being reviewed?
Does GW waitlist all the students they don't accept right away? Or is there an in-between step where they re-review your application before putting it on the waitlist?

if this is one of my choices of school, is it ok to write letter of interest to it? or do u guys think they already made the decision (i interviewed last week of september).

Rejected today after being on hold since mid-August.
🙁 Best of luck to all the rest of you! GW is a great place and I know many people who love it there.

Rejected. (Got hold for a long time and no interview invite)

Has anyone actually gotten a rejection from GW?..I guess that last two posts were made while I was typing...
For those that were rejected, what were your stats like?...I've been on hold since beginning of August, and I'm contemplating if it's worth it to even send updates...

😕Just got my pre-interview rejection email! That really sucks.
But good luck to the rest of you guys. I'm sure there are excellent applicants out here that must be blowing the GW adcom away.

I really wasn't expecting too much here. Should have known given the number of applications they receive each year.

yah...looking back i think it was a huge mistake to apply to the 13k+ app schools like GWU, boston, gtown, etc etc...just a waste of money. If i have to reapply i certainly wouldnt be re applying to these high volume schools they are all rejecting me lol.

Also just got the axe. A little surprised, but at the same time I feel like God's telling me to stay away from D.C...

Best of luck to those still waiting and congrats to those with interviews/acceptances!

I am in this schools pergatory list... they haven't invited me for an interview or rejected me.
