Once I was placed on I hold, I thought it was a polite way of rejecting me, so I didn't even bother to send in an update letter. I don't know if an update letter would really make a difference in my case because things on my application have remained pretty consistent, and now when I go in and interview I can give them a personal update. 🙂

I submitted my secondary first week of October. Still haven't heard back anything from GW (neither interview invite nor hold status). For those who were put on hold, were you notified of that via email?

I never got an email about being put on hold, I just found out by checking my status online.

Did you get an email or did you just check your status page? I interviewed 11/13 so I'm a bit anxious for a decision.

I found out about my alternate placement via the online status, then got a letter in the mail a week or two later.

And Rogi, no, they do not rank the wait list, which is why they call it a 'competetive applicant pool'. Go ahead and send them updates if you can, as they encourage that.

If you're on the alternate list, your online status will tell you that you're on the alternate list:
The Committee on Admissions is pleased to inform you that you have been selected as an alternate for the first year class of the program leading to the Doctor of Medicine degree entering in August 2010. A final decision has yet to be made regarding an acceptance

I don't know for sure, but it doesn't look good for you...

lol yeah the letter they sent via snail mail was very complimentary, telling me that I should be proud of the achievement of being placed on the alternate list. "Pride" doesn't really describe the feeling I had when I was reading the letter...

I was invited off the hold after a 4.5 month wait. Don't give up hope. I would recommend just sending in updates or what not (if things have changed).

I just had my interview last week, it was really nice!

When they put me on hold they did not notify me via e-mail. About 5 weeks after submitting my secondary, I called them to check on my status and they told me I was placed on hold when I called. I have no idea what day they had put me on hold, but no, I never got an e-mail about it. Check your status through their online portal if you aren't sure, or call, as they only update your online status once a week.

What exactly does it mean to be put on hold? I can't decide if it's a good or bad thing? I see that some of you got interviews after being put on hold, but why didn't they just offer the interview up front!

Hold means they don't want to interview you or reject you just yet. They probably want to compare you to more applications that come in later on.

have you checked your online status? several people, myself included, have said that their online status changed but they did not receive emails or letters about it.
