I'd have to second Rutgers06 advice - Have you looked into their student hosting program? It's free, and sometimes you can get nice insight to the school

I am going to be staying with a relative. is there any way by which I can get this "nice insight" before my interview day?

I wouldn't sweat it - usually what a student host tells you is not useful for the interview itself. It's more so just getting an honest assessment of the medical school from one student's perspective.

Congrats to everyone who is getting interviews/acceptances. From my experience, I would say that the host program at Jefferson should be utilized. Jefferson is really focused around their students which is evident by the fact that current students completely run the interview day. I thought it really enhanced my overall experience (got to see everything from a students perspective) Also, it doesn't hurt to interact with a student as a practice for the student interview and to start building a question bank that you can ask student+faculty interviewer. If it is not possible for you to stay with a student, there is an "optional cookie hour" after the interview day that faculty and current students will attend that will allow you some time to talk with them about their experiences. Once again, I would suggest staying unless you have to leave to catch a flight or get home.

Quick question:

I'm doing their secondary now and there is a section (500 words) asking if there is anything else they should know. Do most people talk about why they want to go to Jefferson there or is that a section I should leave blank and talk about why I want to go there at the interview?

I didn't leave it blank. I talked about having family in Philly and other things about their program.

Hey guys,

Sorry if this question has already been asked, but how long does JMC take to notify you of a post-interview update. I appreciate any advice/responses, thank you.

From what I remember, it's 500 characters, not words (BIG DIFFERENCE). I wrote about why I'd want to live in Philly...something that I think Jeff values a lot. I think you can definitely leave this blank if you don't have something meaningful to say, but like every school, they want to know that an applicant has thought about why they are applying to a particular school in a particular city and know they'd be serious about living there.

As a Philly native, I would definitely say Philly is an amazing city to be a student in...and coupled with the awesome geographical location of Jefferson in literally walking distance to almost everything in Center City, it's definitely an awesome place to spend 4 years. Good luck!

Does anyone know if there's any reason to hope that I'll get any sort of substantial scholarship offer from Jefferson? I know all of their aid is need-based, but assuming I am just as "needy" as the rest of the majority of the incoming class.

Has anyone heard of Jefferson students getting anything more than $3-5,000 scholarships? (that's all I could find record of anecdotally on SDN...)

I really really wanted to go to Jefferson but I don't know if I can justify paying $44,000+ per year for Jefferson vs. less than $7,500 per year at my state school with a kickass scholarship offer...

*sigh* 🙁

Anyone else get the upgrade email? Anyone else's heart skip a beat when they saw Gmail - Inbox (1) then jmc.admissions in the sender spot.

God I hate it when they do stuff like that... my heart can only handle so much!

I almost punched the computer screen when I saw it was neither an interview invite or rejection. :boom:

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!?

This is the second time the Jeff. admissions office pulled this crap. 🙄

It took them exactly a week to get back to me. All interviews and application reviews are done on Wednesdays. As far as I know, they will call as soon as they make a decision on your application about an acceptance. However, if your interviewer is unable to attend the following weeks meeting (or even for a few weeks), it can end up being significantly longer than a week or two.

As far as the financial aid that someone asked about, I think everything is need based as someone pointed out (at least if I remember the financial aid session correctly) with most of it being in the form of loans. They did say however that there are more scholarships available in like third or fourth year that donors have made available for individuals pursuing certain areas of interest and have done well in the first couple of years.

what are people's thoughts on the quality of clinical training you would get 3rd and 4th year at Jeff vs. Temple? Anyone out there familiar with both programs?

[I have spent hundreds of hours in Jefferson's ED and Temple's ED.]

As far as experience with trauma surgery, Temple wins hands down. They are the busiest trauma center in Philadelphia and see the most penetrating chest trauma of all trauma centers in PA and likely NJ and NY. Your EM experience at Temple would also be top notch as far as contact with critical patients. Temple's ED serves a very poor population, thus many VERY sick patients come through their ED. Jefferson sees a decent amount of trauma and their share of sick patients passing through the ED, but in my experience they see it less frequently; however, they have many patients transferred in from outside hospitals that never come through the ED (TUH does too, but likely not as much).

Your ICU experiences would probably be similar as far as pathologies seen and treatments, however I'd venture to guess that Temple's patients are often more difficult to manage due to many comorbidities that their clientele tend to have. Jefferson likely sees more in the way of neuro disorders.

Realistically, there is likely little difference. I think no matter where you go, your education will be great.

Maybe you should flip a coin if you have to choose between the two.

Arrgggg!!! JEFFERSON!! You and your "false hope" emails!!!

hey guys, just being paranoid. I emailed the person, i guess their name is Luel San Diego, my contact info etc. I did not receive an acknowledgment of receipt email from them. I know, I know that I should have confirmed it at that point but I dont know how it escaped my mind. Neither did the person email me again asking me to send in the info. SHoudl I assume that they received it? Should I email Luel to confirm if they received my cell number etc?

You should have received a letter confirming the interview, once your send in your information (cell number, photo, etc). I'm not sure how long it's been since you emailed, but Luel (the interview coordinator) has always replied to my emails within 5 days or so... you can always call him to confirm, he's a REALLY nice guy.

Hmm I never got a letter, but I did get a reply back from Mr San Diego when I sent all that info. I'm guessing that's good enough.

Let me know what he says, perhaps I'll have to call as well if there is a problem.

Sorry for the late response. I did call him today and he was very nice and confirmed that my name is there and he has my aamc ID etc.

I sent Jefferson an 'in the area' email last week because I'm coming back to the states from abroad for interviews and they got back to me same day, about 8 hours later, saying they were not going to offer me an interview... disapointing but i was impressed by the fact they actually reviewed my file and got back to me. The lady was very nice about it, too. maybe those of you still waiting could employ this strategy? I dont think the fact that I asked had anything to do with me not getting an interview but who knows:laugh: good luck, I did like Jefferson...

If you received a reply back acknowledging your email, then that is probably sufficient. But if you're really worried, then I suppose you can always call... better safe than sorry!

So what exactly was that system upgrade for?!? I didn't see any change in my status page... I've been complete since mid-September and still no word... Hummmfffff.

same here 😱

I called two Fridays ago to request an interview, as I'd be in the area for another Philadelphia school and they have yet to get back to me. Has anyone else attempted this course of action? With two weeks until the interview, it looks like a tacit "no."

holyhekshler, who did you email? My interview at the other school is December 10th, which makes this quite short notice at this point.

So what happens when you push 4 to request an interview? Haha I was so tempted to do it.

You are guided to a voicemail. I left one about three weeks ago as I would be in the area and did not hear back.

Just saw this, sorry! I emailed their admissions office [email protected] . This was the respone about 8 hours later.

Dear Hekshler:
I am sorry, but we have received applications from many more well qualified applicants than we have open interview slots and we will not be able to offer you an interview. Not good news, but better to know, I guess.

I emailed a couple other schools but they were the only peeps that got back to me, so i appreciated it. It obviously didn't work out for me but I was glad to know so I could exhale. Good luck!

i interviewed on 11/18 and was placed on the 'alternate category'. is anyone on the same boat?

Sorry about the rejection, hope it all works out. It's good to know that Jeff is at least humane enough to let applicants know promptly if they request it. I can't think of any other med school that really does this. Dean Callahan is super nice too... I've had a co-worker email her about why they hadn't received an interview and she offered to have a phone conversation with her the next day to talk about some holes in her application.

So maybe it isn't a bad idea to just email her personally and ask her if there is anything that can be done while waiting to hear back that would strengthen my application? Jefferson is my first choice, so I'm eager to interview there...

Can't hurt. Give it a try.

You could also call to request a phone appointment to talk to Dr. Brooks. This is what myself and previous poster in this thread cookiemonster did. It was good to talk directly to an admissions officer. How much it helped remains to be seen.

Well time is on our side... I basically went back and read the posts of the past few application cycles at Jefferson and it seems they interview way late into the spring (like up until mid April)...

Anyway... good luck... Hopefully we'll both end up with good results in May
