Just a heads up to everyone who has already interviewed at LSU-NO...I just had my interview today and they told us the adcom is having its first meeting this Fri so we should expect to hear from them next week 😱

I just got accepted via snail mail! 😀

I guess the mail was running a bit fast around NOLA today! So much for the 15th.

Congrats! I haven't even interviewed yet (this upcoming tuesday)

😡 GAH the wait is killing me! the decision is supposed to get mailed to my house and it wasn't in the mail today 🙁

Oh but congrats to those of you who did get happy news 🙂

Got my letter today. Had my dad open it and I got in.

So that makes 3 of 5 from our group at least.

WOOOOO!!! I'm so happy for you! Told you that you had nothing to worry about. One of the girls that interviewed with us got in too. I haven't heard from the other.

Just wondering, I have one coming up and would like to be as prepared as possible. Any memories of what questions you were asked would be helpful. Thanks in advance and congratulations on being interviewed.

I am awed by the ever expanding collection of user contributions to every possible aspect of the medical school application process. Thank you KSMI117 for helping me navigate these vast waters!

Not a problem. It's what I'm here for. If you have any other questions, send me a private message. I'll be happy to help.

Congrats to the accepted and good luck on your interviews. If anyone has any questions about LSU-NO, feel free to PM me. I am currently a second year.

As far as getting you an interview or overall? I didn't write the optional essay and I'm interviewing there next Wed.

If you don't mind that I ask, do you have really competitive GPA and MCAT scores? I'm just wondering because I'm trying to decide if I should write the optional essay... I have some "questionable" grades from my first year and a half of college and am wondering if i should write about it. or let them see that i brought my grades up.

CGPA: >3.9, SGPA: >3.8, MCAT: >30. Just IMHO, from people I've talked to, it seems better to not bring up the grades issue until they ask (although if it is some extenuating circumstance like family issues or something you could talk about that and how you've handled it?)...and an upward trend is definitely in your favor 👍

I have a question. If you took the mcat twice and scored a 24 both times but had a combined highest subset of 27. What are my chances?

Should I re-take it and try to perform again all at once?

received an acceptance letter yesterday.

I got invited for a OOS MD PHD interview today and scheduled it for Dec 7th :luck:

I much rather go to school out of state 🙂 been in the same area for almost 25 years! Holy crap that's a long time.

Wow sounds exciting. I was complete oct. 16th so I hope to get an invite soon. I think you'll be soo stuck on med school you prob won't have a sence of where you are so location won't really matter.

I think you have a shot. Your GPA is a little on the low side though. Try and bring that up this year and you should be fine. :luck:

Accepted 12/24! I got a new GMC Terrain for Xmass but this letter definitely tops the car. 😛

LSU-NO: i just turned in my app in Nov, did secondary early in Dec. does anyone know when i might get an interview request?

I was invited within two weeks of having my application completed, so most likely you will hear from them by the end of January.

Whether or not you believe the MCAT to be a good indicator of your knowledge and skills set, the admissions committees are placing an increasingly greater emphasis on your MCAT score. As more schools trend out their students who are failing the Step 1 exam, the most recurring theme is low MCAT score (as well as low ACT/SAT score which usually coorelates to MCAT).

If you score low on the MCAT, it's not necessarily that you are not smart enough to become a physician, but sometimes it's that you have anxiety issues or just a poor test taker in general. In any case, this trend will usually continue to the Step 1 as it is a big standardized test as well.

So, yes, you should reschedule the MCAT and try very hard to score better. Most admission committees will at least look somewhat favorably on your efforts to improve your score as it can speak volumes to your determination (which is also a crucial block to becoming a physician). Best of luck to you.👍

Thanks for replying. I guess you're right, if there is some type of correlation, then that could be why i haven't gotten any interview invites. This is my second time applying. I guess I will re-consider re-taking the MCAT if I have to but I will still wait, do you know if getting an interview in March considered too late in the rolling admissions cycle or does it really matter?

Is the Step I similar to the MCAT verbal section or is it more similar to the science sections? Just wondering.

Hey I think I interviewed with you...ha.

Much of the time, an interview in March will be given as a courtesy to meet with the applicant and discuss positives and negatives on the application. However, there are still very worthy applicants who will get interviewed in March and be accepted into that year. The statistics just point to the former.

Step I is much more like the science section. It's a LOT of information to learn and hopefully you will be familiar with most of it through your first 2 years of medical school. There are some questions that can be deduced through logic (which gives really good test takers an advantage), however the majority of the test is testing your knowledge of the basic sciences and how they relate to clinical practice. One of the reasons that only taking the MCAT once and not doing well on it is that it potentially shows a character flaw. That flaw would be that some people will put forth a minimum effort to get by and be happy with it if they do get by (even barely). However, don't take this to mean that this generalization applies to all applicants that fit this description. It is merely an observation if you go back and look at the records of those who perform poorly on the Step I exam.

well i guess there is hope for me since i did well on my science sections. I feel more positive though because i spoke with a resident today and he told me that i will get in, it's just a matter of getting more competitive each application cycle and i am taking public health courses right now so hopefully that will help and i am working for research. if I have to apply another year then i may have to. I don't want to give up so easily. u seem to know a lot about this stuff. It seems like u have REALLY looked into this, it's very helpful info for me though. Thanks!

well i guess i meant, i hope that reviewing is a good sign... just hoping for the best. Hope it works out for me...

now i think i understand the importance of the MCAT. I guess it REALLY is a predictor of future scores? I really think i have what it takes to be a doctor too but oh well, i guess it doesn't determine that, it just determines the boards. Oh well :-(
