Just got an email today from downstate asking me to reaffirm my interest in SUNY Downstate. I am on hold right now. Did anybody get any email like this? Is this a good sign or do they send it out to everybody? Someone please reply!!

I got this a few days ago, now i got a letter saying that i am on alternate list. I need to fill out the medical forms and get my BLS card.... - does that mean I will be accepted, or again- the same chances as being on" hold for spring considereation"

I think you have a good chance of an acceptance. This letter was via snail mail I'm guessing?

I was placed directly on the alternate list. Replied the 'interest' e-mail on 5/18/2010 but has not heard anything afterward.

Same with me. Alternate since march and all of my material has been complete as of this month (a few days before i got the email). Unfortunately i haven't heard anything. It looks like a few holds have gotten accepted directly (some were also rejected and others put on alternate). Doesn't seem like any alternates (those that weren't on hold first) have been accepted yet but i could be wrong.

got it..
thanks.

so i guess it doesnt really matter when we fill out the docs they sent...

also, does any other school require cpr license?

I received the e-mail last week, responded i was still interested. then i received a phone call for an acceptance and received the letter via fed ex a few days later. I was on the alternate list.

I was accepted directly from the alternate list (never on hold.)

It looks to me like drbound is the only person here to have been accepted directly from the hold list. Everyone else (since May 14th) seems to have been on the AL before being accepted.

previously on hold...got an envelope in the mail today telling me i'm on an alternate now.

hi all, just got a phone call this morning telling me that i was accepted! i was on hold since January, and got the interest email on May 18. they asked if i was holding other acceptances and if i was still interested in downstate, and accepted me right off the call.

I was put on hold late January. I got an interest email on May 18th, got a phone call on the 19th for an acceptance. I withdrew this week, so I hope my spot goes to one of you waiting!!

Some people get put on the alternate list. With that wonderful large envelope that looks like an acceptance if you haven't been reading this thread 🙂

I was accepted to Downstate, but have a few questions before I make my final decision.
1. What is the grading system like...is it P/F the first two years?

2.Are the lectures available online?

3. How early do the students get clinical exposure?

4. What opportunities are available for the students during the summer after first year?

5. How long are the days?

Thanks guys!!!

Hello!

Here are the answers to your questions:

1. All four years run on a F/P/HP/H system. I personally like it better, because it gives you something to shoot for.

2. Yes. Every lecture is available in a podcast as well as a verbatim transcript word document and all for free. The powerpoints are also put up along with any relevant videos and notes.

3. So this is a question everyone asks and then they come to school and realize that clinical exposure in the 1st 2 years means next to nothing, unless you enjoy shadowing (which i do but alot of people dont). You can get put into the ER to watch the docs in your first month if you want, but you will only be watching. This is pretty standard across all schools...dont expect to be doing too much in a clinical setting til you pass your boards.

We do require a primary care preceptor that you need to do 9 sessions with starting in November. You will be matched up with a doc in a primary care setting and you will interview patients, take vitals, and stuff like that.

4. The days are variable. Usually there are 2-3 lectures in the morning starting at 9 (sometimes 10), then an hour for lunch, then some afternoon activity. Some days youll have anatomy lab, or histo lab, or a small group, or a problem set, or a CBL. Some days you'll simply have off or you'll head to your preceptor.

On average though, the day runs from 9 to 3 (with the 3 being quite variable).

If you really want to get a feel for Downstate, I suggest strongly that you come shadow a student. I'm having a bunch of them follow me and they all seem to love it here.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the info...it is going to help in my decision to pick a school.

i got the interest email on the may 18th after being placed on hold in feb. but have not heard anything since

When do orientation and classes start?

Hi everyone, I was recently accepted from the Alternate list. Is there a listserv for accepted students so they may communicate with one another prior to orientation? I am looking for housing and do not want to live "on campus" Is anyone also in the same position as me? If so please send me a reply.

How do you go about coming and shadowing a student?

Any accepted student need simply to email Ms. Levine and inquire about shadowing a student, and she will set it up for you. Better do it quick though, as we have 2 weeks left!

When do orientation and classes start?

I am not an orientation leader, so I am moving in 8/22, which means classes start just after that and orientation goes for a few days before it.

I sent an interest email but haven't heard anything since.. just an email saying thank you for your continued interest

I got the email and have not been accepted...I have all of my alternate info in as well if that makes a difference.

Hi all,

I got my housing assignment last week:

Building: 825

Room: 208

Occupancy Type: Standard Double

I'm having really mixed feelings. On the one hand the standard double is the only room that comes out to <$700 a month. But on the other hand, I stay up pretty late to study and it might be a problem if my roommate goes to bed early. I never took a tour of the dorms, so I don't know how small the rooms are. Also, I am not sure how the community kitchen and shared bathroom is going to work out.

Can anyone who has lived in a double at Downstate (or gotten a good look at the dorm) let me know what they think. Is the room size, and community kitchen/bathroom decent? How do you think cooking / storing food in the kitchen would be - difficult? Also, are there decent places where I can go to study late at night near the dorms so as not to disturb?

I'm thinking about inquiring if they have singles left but these seemed a bit overpriced.

Does anyone have an idea about when downstate is handing out the next round of acceptances?

A friend of mine knows someone who dormed there and said it was pretty small.

I got my housing assignment too. I'll be living in the same building and floor!

Other than it being small, were there any other complaints. As long as the room is about the same size as my double from freshman year, I'm ok with it.

If I decide to stick with the room, I hope to meet you in about 3 months. Do you also have a double?

HOORAY FOR HOUSING!

I'm gonna be in 825 805. 8th floor is gonna be a party floor! Anyone on the 8th floor give a shout!

No other complaints...im not sure how big your room was freshman year but i believe it should be a standard double room dorm size.

I am also living in a double. I cant wait to meet you and the rest of our class!

Hey guys, I was recently accepted and still debating if I should live on campus since I am from Brooklyn... Is it too late to apply for housing now?

Its probably not too late. I was told they have openings at odd times of the year.

But if I was from BK I would probably live at home. It's not great for the social scene but you are saving a minimum of $500 a month by doing it (if you want a single or an apartment and if you throw in food costs its probably over $1000). Calculate it out over the 4 years and see how much extra in loans you would be taking out to live on campus in a small dorm room.

I am on Hold for Spring Review with a 3.54BCPM, 3.53 Overall, and a 31O (gpa's are updated and lower than they previously were because of 3.18 Spring semester [Genetics at Cornell C+, grading is ruthless in this class]). Since my interview, I had an additional recommendation sent and I engaged in more clinical volunteering.

Can any of the recent acceptees from hold or from the waitlist tell me how my stats compare?

DON'T live at home. I live in Bklyn, and when I was considering DS, I entertained the thought. It is distracting and you miss on the fraternization and competition, which are helpful and frankly, it's not worth the paltry few hundred you save. Not to mention, you won't be able to study late, run to the anatomy lab at midnight...etc if you live away. Plus, for the first year at least, you should meet your classmates.

The dorms aren't bad, I thought they were ok, you can study in your room if your mate goes to sleep early.

I'm in building 811...Is there a difference between 811 and 825?

Thanks for the advice guys. I am gonna go with living in dorms, at least for the first year... I know it's gonna cost a lot more $$$ but I am already saving a lot for being instate. It's just so much easier to focus on studying if you are right there.

Hopefully they still have a room for me!

Not really. 811 is a shorter walk by about 30 seconds but thats all 😀

The waitlist movement seems to be very slow

Hey all,

I've heard all the recommendations for living on-campus, but as a married student, I'm 100% set on living off-campus. Can anyone weigh in on the question of buying into a co-op. Anyone have personal experience/know anyone who's done this? How easy is it to get into a co-op as a medical student, and how might this effect financial aid if signing into a heavy mortgage? Any other thoughts are welcome - thanks!
