I felt the same way- I swear I got some dirty looks from some of the parents. Still, the people who really counted (faculty and students) were all very nice and open. This school is great.

Glad I wasn't the only one who felt like that, but I totally agree that students and faculty were a 👍

I'm starting to think OOS Tuition is worth it for me as well. I don't think I have too much of a shot at merit scholarship (32,3.9), however, I was stunned at the number of people who get at least some money. Either way, I'd rather spend four years at a place where I'll be happy. Screw money!

Not sure how reliable the MSAR spreadsheet is but it shows that total cost of living and tuition at UK ends up being comparable to other, similarly ranked schools as OOS (UK- 70k, IU-73k, Jefferson-66k, SLU-66k). Doesn't seem like too much of a difference when you take into account the fact that other schools will likely hike up tuition each year.

UK was 78K+ last year (based on info from the financial meeting yesterday) and will be higher for the class of 2014. You're right though, OOS most places is very high, however, the cost DIFFERENCE between an IS and OOS here is bigger than most. Regardless, they are very liberal in the budget and I think if you wanted to get by with less than the 22.5K they alot for living expenses, you'd have no problem.

Oh, I guess the MSAR spreadsheet I have is a little outdated. Like you, I'll probably just choose based on where I think I'll be happiest.
 
i really think the tuition guarantee is a reason to justify the higher OOS cost. Because it is higher to comparable OOS tuition at similar schools. The way price of education is increasing, who knows how much more a school will be in 3 years that does not have tuition guarantee.
 
Well, I made the trek from East TN to UK this weekend (the roads weren't as bad as I was told they were...), and I really enjoyed the seminar. I knew most of the info, but the Dr. Brueckner's talk about the anatomy class was new info (the surgery video conferences sound really neat!). Plus, I brought my fiance along for educational purposes (so she could see how broke we were going to be:laugh:). And I agree with everyone else, the faculty and administrators seem first rate!

The OOS tuition is a bit mind boggling, I agree. I do think the tuition guarantee is pretty huge, considering some schools see 10+% increases in tuition a year. The fact that 50% of students receive some kind of scholarship/grant is also pretty big, so hopefully that will make the loan debt easier to swallow for most. I'm set on going here, so now I just need to find a way to manage the financial aspect.

There was a student panel who talked about paying for med school, but I don't recall any of them giving info that was very interesting. Then there were some speakers who discussed service and research opportunities. Overall, I'd say the day was geared more toward parents and family, as any student who has already been accepted has surely researched the school enough to know what was covered.

Haha... welcome to medical school! Your orientation week will be filled with useless student panels to try to calm you down. After a few weeks, you will be so tired of panels, just hearing the word will make you curse. Hey, I may even be one of the panelists next year...

The thing about financial aid is... there is nothing to know. The system is easy on a level I can't put into words. And everyone does it pretty much exactly the same. Very very few people don't take out a LOT of loans. And all of this stuff will be covered in more detail in the future. IMO, we do this meeting every year to calm you guys down, convince you to take time off this summer, and to let parents know that it 1. They have no control over what is about to happen to their beloved children and 2. Everything will be just fine.

Also... it is midnight and I just got done studying. FML.
 
Has anyone heard anything about scholarships/grants? While my stats are above average for UK, I am OOS currently, so I don't know if I should be holding out much hope for scholarships. But, I don't want to give up hope yet if no one has heard about scholarships and such.

UK is my first choice, so I really really hope that I can get some sort of free money! haha

when I was accepted, my interviewer (who called to tell me) said that I was under consideration for scholarship. I haven't heard anything, but I don't know what that means.

I talked with a co-worker somewhere who said she was probably going to UK med next year, and hinted that she got a scholarship.

I heard about an academic scholarship in late November or early December.
 
Rockaction: Yeah, I heard the same thing. I just assumed if something was given out it would have hit SDN at some point (since I think the stronger applicants, and thus the ones more likely to receive scholarships, are over-represented on SDN). I guess I'll continue to hold my breath. :laugh:

seebelcherrun: Does "hearing about" mean you received one, if you're willing to answer? Just curious. Like I said, I'm currently OOS, so who knows if I have a shot.
 
Yes I did. But I remember Ms. McDaniels saying that they would continue to be given out through spring on a rolling basis. So don't give up any hope.
 
Hey does anyone know when UK finishes their interviews in the spring, or when they rereview the people they put on "hold" status?
 
Hey guys, I'm a resident at UK and wanted to congratulate you on your acceptance. I am originally from KY but went to medical school out of state. I didn't know much about UK Hospital/medical center prior to interviewing for residency and really didn't give much thought about training there. In fact, I almost didn't even interview there. However, I went because it was somewhat close to home and that was a consideration.

I was completely blown away by the hospital and offerings after interviewing there. The progress that has been made the last 10 years is somewhat mind-boggling. You will see incredibly sick people shipped in from all over Central and Eastern KY and parts of West Virginia, Tennessee, Virginia, and Ohio as well. If you like trauma, there's plenty of it (the trauma team during the summer will run a census of 60-80). If you like pure medicine then you will see really sick patients on UK wards. UK sends most of the bread and butter medicine (chest pain, COPD, cellulitis, social admits, etc) to UK Good Samaritan down the road and keeps the interesting cases at Chandler. If you like critical care then you'll appreciate the ~160 ICU beds in 8 dedicated and 2 ICU swing units that are always full (counting the NICU and PICU). If you like surgery then there's plenty of it with somewhere around 25,000 surgeries taking place at Chandler and Good Sam. There are days that I leave the hospital amazed at what I've seen.

I don't know anything about the first two years, so i can't comment on those, but the patient population and faculty/residents are there in your 3rd and 4th years to prepare you for anything in residency.

Is anyone signed up for the summer research positions? I waited a bit to contact the professors because I was waiting to hear from some other schools, but now I am pretty sure I am going to UK. Hopefully they are not all full... I guess its a new clean slate for residency applications so I might as well start working on it as soon as possible.

I emailed them on March 16th and here is the reply I got.

You remain on Committee Hold as we continue interviewing applicants for the alternate list. The Committee will meet again in April (date to be determined) to compare and contrast you with all candidates. Our class is presently full; you are therefore vying for a position on the Waitlist, so it would be premature at this juncture to predict likelihood of your acceptance. Feel free to touch base with us again mid-April.

Last interview date was March 27th.
 
Has anyone heard when in April they are meeting to rank the wait-list?
 
I stopped by their office a few days ago, and apparently the meeting is getting pushed back again and we likely won't know anything until early May.
 
Do any of you holding multiple acceptances think they will drop their slot? I know there is gonna be a lot of movement everywhere and I am sure everyone on hold is incredibly anxious to see how it plays out...

Will there be any "need-based" grant or scholarship? Or everything is loan based in the package?

Were we suppose to fill out anything extra for the merit based scholarships? Or is our application sufficient?

I know we got that application in, what like January, for like three scholarships but those were all disadvantaged/minority scholarships so I didn't fill it out.

To my knowledge, everyone is automatically considered for them, other then the ones like you mentioned that required a specific essay. If I remember correctly, those that were emailed about early this year were not even specific to the college of medicine, so they required an outside application. Below is a link to all the college of medicine scholarships. There is quite a few, but definitely not enough for everyone to get one 🙁 Fingers crossed because OOS is really expensive.

Received an email regarding a scholarship offer from UK yesterday. Kindof surprised because when I asked about them in March they said most scholarships had already been given out. I'm IS and was accepted back in October. Had decided on another school, now I'll have to reconsider.....

Anyone know how much wait-list (alternate-list) movement UK usually has?
 
Just got the Alternate list email the other day. I really really really really...... want to go to UK
 
I was heart-broken when I found out they don't reveal your rank on the alternate list.

Alternates, please post if you get accepted. I would like to feel like there is at least some movement on that list.
 
I know an int'l person who likely will be withdrawing.

Its good to know the waitlist is moving. I just wish I knew where I am on it. Hopefully I will be joining you soon.

I posted this same thing on the U of L thread. Are there some UK people who are holding U of L acceptances or waitlist spots? What tends to be the pattern with people being accepted at both?

I'm in the situation opposite of what you have mentioned. Accepted to UofL and on UK's waitlist. I know that several of the people who apply to UK also apply to UofL. I would assume that there are several people accepted at one and accepted/waitlisted at the other.
 
Hi, I'm applying to Kentucky for the class of 2015. I have read through the five pages of this discussion and was wondering if the discussion ends here or if it was moved to another forum.
 
This is where it ends for now. Anybody heard anything regarding loan packages?
 
No, no word here on Loan Packages or Financial Aid awards. But they did tell me in late May on the phone that they had planned on sending out awards electronically on June 1st. I guess they're running behind...
