Their class is already full. I interviewed last week, and that's what they told us. You will be interviewing for an admitted but waiting list. They said that when you are accepted under this list you are admitted, but since it's against the law for them to admit more people than they have seats available they can't just simply admit you. They also said that each year each person on this list gets in, and they even go beyond the list (I'm assuming to admit those on the waiting list).

Good luck!

When I interviewed back in December before the Boca fiasco the assistant dean mentioned that anyone interviewing after january was likely interviewing for a waitlist spot but also that the waitlist tended to move pretty fast later on. He said if someone is on a waitlist and really wants to attend, to let him know during marchish so that when they start admitting off the waitlist he can get them in.

good luck on your interview!

Wow, I just got an interview invite here too!

Congrats! I know you've been waiting for this one!

Thanks everyone! I had been really wanting an interview here but definitely assumed I didn't have a chance at this point. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear about an interview! 🙂

Has anyone been formally rejected post-interview yet?

I interviewed December 18th and haven't heard a peep from Miami.

I called a couple weeks ago and they said my application had been reviewed and I should expect a response either by email or snail mail, so I expected the worse.

Now I'm just confused... 😕

If you're accepted, you'll most likely receive an e-mail of a phone call before a letter in the mail. If you get a letter in the mail, hope that it's a large envelope, in which case it will be good news, news worthy of having additional sheets of paper appended to it. If you get a small envelope in the mail, however, expect the worse: a single sheet of paper is enough to notify a person of their rejection.

I hope this helps.

Wouldn't a single sheet of paper be enough to notify someone of being on the waitlist as well?

LOL Shneaky had it right. Got the single sheet envelope yesterday notifying me that I'm on the wait list. Someone had mentioned that people tend to come off the wait list here, so I'm considering this good news (all things considered)! 👍

Lord knows I would LOVE to go to Miami. South-Florida boy through and through. Good luck everyone! 🙂

the small envelope can be good news too: acceptance letter came in a small envelope with only 2 sheets of paper 🙂

That was after they'd already contacted you by phone or e-mail, right?

yeah. email followed by letter a couple days after.

Does anyone know when their interview season ends? I'm still hoping for an interview but have not heard back from them since early fall. Have they rejected anyone recently pre-interview?

I'm still hoping for an interview as well. Hopefully, they are still offering interviews! :xf:

Tomorrow is ADCOM day...just a little nervous :scared: Keeping my fingers crossed!!! :xf::xf::xf:

Gosh. I didn't hear anything. I was really hoping, guess I'll have to wait another two weeks.

I got a letter in the mail today from Miami (interviewed 2/4 boca 2/5 miami). It said I was placed on the alternate list. The date on the letter was 2/19....I'm confused about the wording though.

The first paragraph reads like this:

"The Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, regional campus in Boca Raton, has finished evaluating your application for the class entering in 2010 and has placed you on the alternate list at our Miami campus."

I wouldn't normally read that much into it, but since they cut the Boca program, I am. LOL. Is Boca still making their own adcom decisions which is transferrable to Miami? Or is the Miami campus calling the shots?

Anyone get a letter like this, or can shed some light on this before I call the admissions office tomorrow? THANKS!

update:

Okay, its official. Spoke to office this morning, I'm on the waitlist. Hoping for some movement!

I had given up on hearing anything from here but I got an interview invite last Friday. 🙂 It was a nice surprise even if its true that I'll be interviewing for a spot on the waitlist...

Out of curiosity, what are the last remaining interview dates?

I find it strange things have been so quiet here for so long.

Yea whats up with this place, I submitted in July and haven't heard anything. I am OOS tho....

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew which waiting list they will be placed in. Do all of the letters just say you will be in the "alternate list," or is the wording on the letter different depending on which list you're in.

Please help!

As far as I know, the admitted but waiting list uses the term "temporary" alternate list, the temporary implying that you will most likely be afforded a spot in the class once the dust settles from the application process. They go through that list before turning to their regular alternate list. I'm not sure of the wording of the rest of the letter, but we were told that the term temporary is the key difference. Hope that helps! GL.

Hey all,

So i'm one of the students that was originally accepted to the Boca campus. I only applied to Boca, so I've never been to the Miami campus or am familiar with the area.

I'm planning to attend the Orientation session that they are holding on March 15th. I will be flying in from Philadelphia Sunday afternoon. ANyone recommend anywhere for lodging? Should I also rent a car? Also I'm arriving in Miami early afternoon so I have a chance to visit places.. Anyone recommend places to visit?

I'm born and raised in Miami and have lived here all my life. Thus, I can't really recommend any place specific for lodging since I've never had to stay in a hotel in Miami. Overall, I have to say that I would not stay anywhere less than 3 stars in Miami since many ppl I know have had very bad/gross experiences with low-rated hotels. Brickell and Miami Beach are the closest areas to the med school, but hotels in Miami Beach can be extremely expensive/overpriced and traffic can be terrible in that area. You definitely need a car to get around miami since public transportation here is not good (the metro-rail system only takes you to a limited number of places, some of which can be sketchy/ghetto). Taking a cab would be the best thing if you don't have a car. I think you have to be at least 25 yrs old to rent a car here but I'm not sure so I would double check. I would definitely recommend renting a car if you can. The places I would visit (in order of distance from the med school) would be:

Brickell (really good restaurants/bars),
South Beach (you can hang out on the beach, weather permitting or you can walk around Lincoln Road; night life here is very good in terms of clubs),
Parrot Jungle Island (a zoo-ish place),
Crandon Park (another beach in Key Biscayne with nice views of the skyline),
Coco Walk in Coconut Grove (restaurants, shops, and bars/clubs at night),
Vizcaya and Gardens (a really nice huge, old mansion that is now a museum with views of the city),
Fairchild Tropical Gardens,
Coral Gables (mostly residential, but very nice, with shops and really good restaurants around Miracle Mile and Ponce de Leon Blvd),
Miami Metro Zoo

For shopping, I would recommend malls like Sunset Place, Dolphin Mall, or Dadeland Mall. You can PM me if you have any questions or want more info! You're not going to have time to see all of the above unless you're staying for about a week so I would stick to what activities you would like to do most and refer to the above. Also, I don't know how long you're staying but avoid driving during rush hour on weekdays if you can. Traffic all over Miami gets impossible on weekdays from about 8am to 10am and again from about 4pm to 7pm. Hope this helps!

Great this is awesome! Thanks wg86!

I stayed at the Marriott Biscayne Bay for my interview for around 100 bucks and it was pretty awesome and only 7 min away from school. Cab ride took about 10 min.

I haven't stayed there, but there is a brand new (opened a few months ago) Springhill Suites that is about 2 blocks away from the Clinical Research Building and the med campus. it's on 10th.

You will probably get movement. They have experience doing this and they would probably not be interviewing anymore if they didn't know that at least some of the people interviewing now would be matriculating in the fall.

As a local, I do NOT reccomend staying ANYWHERE near the actual medical school campus (i.e within a couple blocks). Overtown is one of the highest crime areas in all of Florida. Stay on Brickell, in Coral Gables, or on Miami Beach. Brickell is less than 10 minutes away, and is much, much safer.

if anyone is wondering, i talked to them and they said business casual is fine for the tour day!

Anyone else nervous about this situation? I would hate to commit here and have them bump up tuition a ton. It's already very low in relation to other private schools.

Well, I live in the area, and rumor has it that UM will actually be leaving Jackson Memorial Hospital and relocating to the newly acquired University of Miami Hospital down the block. This actually is not a rumor, it's actually being considered as we speak.

At least UM's medical facilities are doing reasonably well, but if UM and Jackson split, then where are we going to get experience in trauma/emergency medicine?! Jackson's Ryder Trauma Center is the only level 1 trauma center in South Florida! And it's amazing that they're considering laying off residents during their training.

Yup, definitely making me think twice about UM.

Just got a letter in the mail placing me on the alternate list. Has anyone been placed on the "temporary" alternate list recently if there is such a thing? -- or are they just placing everyone on the alternate list now that the class is full? Not sure what it means or what my chances of getting in of the wait list are now but I guess I'll have to wait till May 15th :/

I'm pretty sure Broward General in Ft. Lauderdale is a level 1 trauma center, but NovaSE has that place for their DOs. 🙂 My friend there loves it.

and that's over 1 hour away from miami. Hopefully they can work this thing out.

I'm not sure what the big fuss is about trauma; if you want to go into trauma, then okay, but otherwise, I'm not sure that experience in trauma/burn is all that pertinent to anything. There are very nice medical school with excellent training programs far from trauma/burn populations and there are not-so-great programs where the trainees get to work with such populations. That is definitely not a deal breaker.

Received letter: 3/5
Interviewed: 2/5

"...Miami Miller School of Medicine...has placed you at least temporarily on the alternate list at our Miami campus."

I LOVE waiting! lol

Officially on the waitlist. Hopefully hearing some good news soon.

dammit. i interviewed late january and haven't heard about any decision yet. this isn't making miami look too attractive at the moment.
