Twin cities is an awesome place! Visited some college friends there and love the city.
Has anyone received secondaries for the twin cities yet?

From my knowledge Twin Cities hasnt sent theirs out yet and Duluth has.

Twin Cities will come out in the next couple weeks prob.

I agree I lived there during my undergrad then worked their after I graduated. It is awesome because you have this big city and a few miles away you can get away from all the craziness.

The traffic sucks though.

I would like to take the time to apologize for this school, where I am currently an undergrad.

It is a little known fact that the U of M TC is the hardest partying school in the country and the debauchery of the grad schools here is the stuff of legend😀

The reason that no secondaries have been sent out is probably due to the fact that the admissions committee is spending all day smoking up the ganja and throwing wild sex parties😀

As soon as they have had their fill of that we will get our secondaries.

got an email today saying that they have received my verified AMCAS and that they will send me a secondary soon..

I was verified on 8/5.. Did you get the email where you had to choose Duluth or the Twin Cities campus? If you got that one, it probably doesn't matter.. I'll PM you what the email said

Couldn't agree more! My wife and I recently moved to Madison after living in St Paul since 2000. I think I really took for granted how awesome that area really is.

Still waiting. Hopefully they'll have this out soon. From what I recall from one of their info sessions, there should be "8 or 9 questions" on the secondary, some of which are short or straightforward yes-or-no's (ex: felony/misdemeanor, I assume you give an explanation if you have to answer 'yes'). Don't know what the exact prompts for the longer questions will be, but hopefully they won't be too unusual.

Finally got this secondary. Anyone else having problems accessing it?

Haven't gotten it yet. But I am curious about the questions and prompts on the secondary once you're able to access it.

Nice, they finally started sending out secondaries. Hopefully I'll get mine tommorrow

I almost got nervous that I didn't get one yet, because I submitted on june 5th, but then i remembered i'm md/phd. oh, how this process is messing with my mind

I got it, too, and I'm not having any problems accessing it.

I can't get in it, it says I was sent a password but I wasn't. I tried to do the "forgot my password" thing and I got an error screen. I'll try again tomorrow.

In the meantime, could you share the prompts with those of us who can't get the app to work??

Thanks!

Well, you were sent a password way back when the U of M first acknowledged your AMCAS application. The subject said " Thank you for applying to the University of Minnesota Medical School." I probably only know this because I was using the same password for Duluth's secondary.

The prompts are....

1. Beyond what you have written in your AMCAS Personal Comments, discuss your early life experiences, family background and aspects of your home community that have led to your decision to become a physician.

2. Describe a difficult life experience and how you dealt with it.

3. Our medical school is committed to enrolling and graduating a diverse student body. The Admissions Committee considers the following: high academic potential, disadvantaged background, race and ethnicity, evidence of outstanding leadership, creativity, unique work or service experience, community involvement, non-traditional educational progression, and demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations.

Please explain how you have demonstrated a commitment to diversity and/or working with diverse populations.

4. If you did not designate Minnesota as your state of legal residence on your AMCAS application, briefly describe any ties that you might have to this state. If you are a Minnesota resident, please enter N/A.

5. Briefly describe what you are currently doing. If you have already graduated, please indicate what you have been doing since graduation, and what your plans are for the coming year.

6. Please explain any gaps in your education and/or work experiences since high school graduation that are not previously described in your application. If there are none, please enter N/A.

7. Should you not be accepted to medical school, the alternative career that you would pursue is:

8. Have you ever been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor? If YES, you must include a full explanation below.

9. What other pertinent information would you like to bring to the attention of the Admissions Committee? If there is none, please enter N/A.

Knowing the character limits would be nice...I feel like the first three questions leave some room for overlap, but if there's a limit, it would make it somewhat easier to decide how to spread out the info to avoid being redundant.

Hey all...they give you word limits for each question, but underneath the text box is a character limit, which seems to be the real thing that matters. However, in the instructions it says you must obey the word limits. Do what you believe to be best, but I am following the word limits and my responses have then been less than the character limits. Sorry that was long-winded.

Refer to the previous posts with the specific questions:

1. 250 words/1500 characters
2. 250 words/1500 characters
3. 250 words/1500 characters
4. 50 words/300 characters
5. 200 words/1200 characters
6. 200 words/1200 characters
7. 50 words/300 characters
8. If yes, 200 words/1200 characters
9. 150 words/900 characters

Good luck to all!

U of Minnesota has started sending out secondaries.

Hi there...

FINALLY received an e-mail link to the U of M Twin Cities secondary application last night. The Duluth one came out ages ago but I don't envy any of you that are applying - 23 essay questions, yikes!

Off work today, so I'll probably try and get it completed.
BTW - I'm an OOS, so I don't know if their timeline is different for in-state vs. OOS.

Some of you were looking for it, so here's the link I got in the message:
www.meded.umn.edu/apps/admissions/supplemental/

Cheers!

you guys that got the secondary when were you complete? And I was also wondering about the Instate vs OOS as far as timelines go. Anyboy have any idea?

I never even got the email, but I just went to the link posted above with the password that was emailed to me like a month ago and it let me sign in... I was verified on 8/5 though

That worked for me too. Do you think it's wise to start the secondary without the invite? It definitely looks like I'm in the system but...

to CRX

Would you be able to log in if you were screened out? I see no harm in starting working on it.

DO NOT START THE SUPP. APPLICATION IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN SCREENED. I assumed it was fine to login prior to screening, payed the fee, and started. Today I received an e-mail from UMin Admissions stating that THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. Do not make the same mistake I did 🙁

What you can probably do is start writing the essays but don't submit them and do not pay.

That sucks! What did they say? I hope it does not affect your application. If you ask me it does not make sense that people get passwords but not allowed to submit the secondary. I don't think any other school that screen does this.

Thank you, I hope it will not affect anyone that jumped the gun like I did. :xf: I was only trying to submit it as soon as possible! Please note that I never submitted the application, but did pay right away. I assumed since I could login, that I had access to the supplemental. Assume ==> ASS YOU ME right?👎

Their screening process functions so only qualified applicants can submit it (rightfully so). Overall, wait for the screening like a good little pre-med:laugh:

:luck:

Then why would those screened out have access to the secondary? It just does not make sense. I guess U of M's secondary coming out in August, when other schools already conducting interviews, does not make much sense either. W/E!

Yikes. Seems like they're the ones that screwed up by allowing everyone on the supplemental server. I think it's unfair of them to be so harsh. I mean, there wasn't even a warning or anything on that website. Glad I waited.

Ouch. Thanks for letting us know though, you saved me much grief.

Got this one earlier today, though I'm kind of amused by the second half of their e-mail:

We are pleased to invite you to complete our school's supplemental application. You are encouraged to submit all of the required supplemental materials within 30 days but no later than January 31, 2010. Once all supplemental application materials are received and reviewed, qualified applicants are invited to interview. After the interview has taken place, an interview report is added to the applicant's file. The entire file is then reviewed by the Admissions Committee for a final decision.

The University of Minnesota Medical School-Twin Cities is one of the top medical schools in the nation, with opportunities to pursue a wide range of educational, research and clinical experiences. We are dedicated to the education and training of medical students and residents, and the lifelong learning of physicians in practice.

Please note that the profile of students invited to interview is quite strong. The middle 50% of applicants invited to interview had GPAs that ranged from 3.29 to 3.92 and MCAT scores that ranged from 29 to 37. While there were applicants invited to interview with lower GPAs and MCATs, these students had either significant medical and non-medical experiences or outstanding graduate-level grades, or a combination of both. In addition, 73% of the successful applicants were involved in community service or volunteer work, 75% in research, and 82% in medically-related work. If you do not feel your profile is similar in some way to these students, or your grades have only recently improved, we urge you to carefully consider whether or not you should submit your supplemental application to Minnesota.

Again, I am very pleased to invite you to complete the supplemental application. You may access the application online at:

www.meded.umn.edu/apps/admissions/supplemental/ [don't go if you haven't gotten the e-mail I did, per above]

I wish you the very best as you progress through the application process. Please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Paul T. White, J.D.
Associate Dean of Admissions
University of Minnesota Medical School- Twin Cities

Couldn't they just have said, "We're kind of a big deal. If you're kind of a big deal too (statwise), go ahead and complete the secondary. If not, then don't waste your time."

Pretty much the most lenient course requirements I've seen though:

Required Courses
Semesters
Quarters
Biology (with lab)
Biological sciences coursework with emphasis on general principles, cell biology and/or physiology.
1
1
Chemistry (with lab)
General or Organic Chemistry
1
1
Life Sciences (additional courses)
Biology, genetics, zoology, botany, parasitology, biochemistry, chemistry (general or organic, but must be in addition to the general or organic chemistry listed above), physics, etc. At least two must be upper-level courses.)
4
4
Humanities or Social Sciences
One upper-level course in the humanities or the social sciences, with an intensive writing requirement
1
1

Parasitology? So that means I can use political science!🙂👍

Hahahhahhaha. I love this explanation.

Are they sending out the supplemental applications in waves? Any one receive a secondary with a primary application verified around 7/16 or so?

This is my first time here, I made the same mistake as some people above by completing the secondary uninvited.🙁🙁

They seems to specifically be referring to SDN:

Maybe you assumed that this action is acceptable, but we can assure you, it is not (despite what might be discussed on popular online forums). If you'd like to provide an explanation as to why you decided to circumvent our application process, you are welcome to do so.

I had not checked out your forum until getting this email, but was curious after reading this. Interesting.

Holy **** man, I would be freaking out right now if I were you. I tried to log in uninvited but couldn't for some reason and I'm nervous that they some how found out about my attempt!

And their reference to SDN is making me paranoid that they have spies watching the forums at all times! I wouldn't be surprised if one of YOU were secretly a MN admissions dude...

If that was a reference to SDN, it's pretty clear they don't have "spies" here, because there was never any discussion of intentionally circumventing their process. People found the link on here or elsewhere and falsely assumed it wasn't by invite. There's nothing sinister about that. That message they sent the other poster was really rude and reflects poorly on them.

First of all, I was just joking about the spies comment. Secondly, I totally agree about their e-mail being rude and unprofessional, but they're in control of this game and we play by their rules, whether they are fair or not.

Has anyone who got this note from the admissions office actually called to ask what's up? Do you know whether this will negatively affect your chances of getting in, or was it just a stop-gap because they were getting bombarded by applications?

Interview Invite! Submitted secondary only two days ago. They are slow with the secondary but they are sure fast at reviewing apps.

I am IS btw.

What did yall say to the question about what your alternative career plans would be if you weren't accepted to med school?
