Is there a separate thread for U of MN-Duluth medical school? If not, has anyone interviewed there/been accepted, or does anyone have any information about what is going on with Duluth? Thank you.

There isn't, but I can tell you that I just got rejected from there yesterday pre-interview IN STATE. (In the same effing city, actually). Good luck to you though!

I grew up about 50 miles North of Duluth (talk about rural....) and I the first time I applied I also was rejected pre-interview. The only thing my letter said was that I did not seem "fit for rural practice".

They crazy.

I'm from Duluth too and was rejected from there pre-interview the first time I applied. "No rural family practice potential" was the given explanation. Ideally for them, you should be from a town of 10,000 or less to have the highest probability of going back to one of those small towns to work as a family practitioner. Whatever, I'm not drinking their kool-aid.

The reason Duluth does that, and the reason why the Twin Cities campus heavily favors In-State residents is because they're primarily funded by the state and taxpayers of Minnesota. Tuition doesn't come remotely close to covering the cost of medical training so why would the people of Minnesota have any interest in paying to train someone from some other state that will most lilkely leave the state after schooling?

The state has a need to provide medical care to rural communities and since the state is paying for it people shouldn't have a problem with an institution being tasked for that purpose. They aren't dumb, they know people will lie and claim to have a strong interest in rural medicine just to get the MD and then take off. They're trying to meet the mandate the state taxpayers have presented to them and they know the most likely people to return to small towns are the people that are immersed in the culture.

As a non-traditional that pays heavy taxes and has for quite some time, I'd be pretty offended if either campus was giving OOS students equal consideration. If they want to do that then get funding somewhere else or quadruple tuition rates and become self sufficient.

I think it's my history of not living in a "rural area." Duluth has been the smallest city I've lived in with Manila and Chicago being the biggest. So, whatever man, you just lost someone who actually wanted to practice in a rural setting.

FYI
If anyone is looking for a great deal on a hotel check out the Days Inn on University Ave. If you tell them you are going for an interview the rate is $80 including tax, plus they will give you a ride to and from your interview. This is the second Days Inn that has given a substantial discount for interviewing students, so I expect it to hold for most Days Inn. Might come in handy for future use. Happy Applying and Good Luck!

$80 is a discount rate??? Is living cost high in Minneapolis-St.Paul?

I got a hotel room at the Holiday Inn for less than $60 and they also shuttled me to my interview and back. Priceline is the way to go!

Compared to the rest of Minnesota, yes.
Compared to New York or D.C., no.

Depends on what area/suburb you want to live in. The farther you get from the metro area the cheaper things get.

Thanks for the response. I'm not familiar with the area, having been there only once, but where is the medical school located? If I get accepted at UMN and go there, I'll probably want to live within walking distance from the school... Is it in an expensive area?

Well shoot, I wish I would have known that about 5 hours ago.

Sorry, I should have posted that sooner. I thought someone else had posted about priceline but I now realize that it was on another school's thread. 🙁

Medical school is on the main U campus which is surrounded by its own area called "Dinkytown". It is near downtown Mpls, one of the most expensive areas to live.

It is possible to find cheaper places to live near campus if you are willing to have roommates. Since there are so many undergrads, though, landlords are kind of free to charge whatever, because someone will pay.
As long as you stay on one of the main buslines (most of them will go straight to the U as an express, or you can get to the U from downtown easily) you can live farther away and find more reasonable rent. It really depends on what you are looking for, number of roommates, etc.

If you want more specific info, PM me ^_^

Interviewed today (YAY)
Was surprised that after the whole "we prefer IS, blah blah" I think only 4/10 people interviewing were actually from MN, and I'm pretty sure only 2 of us actually still lived there.

One of the tour guides/ambassadors wore a sweatshirt, wind pants, and grody sneakers. I <3 MN, but they need to maybe put a more professional face on for these things.

Awesome, how'd you like it? Any further word on when more notifications can be expected? Are they still saying "4-6 weeks" ?

Hmm, this has been pretty standard for the med student tours at all the schools I have interviewed at, lol.

Ah ha, I saw you guys walking pass twice in MCB, when I was enjoying my lunch with my gf and wondering when I can get the interview 😀

I can understand jeans & whatever, but it barely looked like this girl showered in the morning. At least the undergrad ambassadors have matching shirts. It seems strange to me to have all of us in suits and the people representing the school look like bums.

I'll get off my high horse now 😉

They did indeed tell us "4-6 weeks" with "6 weeks at the latest".
I wanted to ask about that time frame for some of you guys who interviewed earlier but didn't want to provoke anyone in admissions 🙄

Had a really nice interview, I think I was suppose to be in there for 45 min and we talked for over an hour. Felt bad for the girl who apparently had been waiting outside the door for her interview.

Interview invite! Finally my homestate recognized me. Super pumped for this one.

Congrats, Moogle Man. I would also like to know when you were complete. Also, is your interview before the end of the year?

Very funny exchange, Sassilysweet. I'm happy to hear your interview went well. Going past the alotted time is definitely a good thing.

Thanks! I'm not sure when I was complete, but I submitted my secondary on 10/7. I scheduled my interview for Nov. 30th, but other dates included Nov. 23rd, and the 3rd, 4th, and 7th of Dec.

Got the call last night. Accepted 😀

Interviewed Sept 24
OOS
3.74/34N

Congrats! How does it rank on your list? Below Wisconsin?

Yeah I am about 99% sure I am going to Wisconsin. I am actually in the process of buying a condo here. If I get my condo I will release this acceptance right away.

anybody else here post-interview? any waitlist/rejections handed out? My 6 weeks ends tomorrow

By the way.. Congrats Buffy!

Glad to hear that they're releasing decisions. Congrats! Anyone else hear anything?

I interviewed early OCt. and i'm still waiting, but also about 99% sure i'll go to Madison regardless.

I do love mpls though

For those waiting to hear back from Minnesota, I received an interview invite today. My application was complete around the 29th of October. I scheduled my interview for December 14th. Much relief. Very excited!

In-state. Yeah, they have a great program here - diverse opportunities. Good luck to you.

I just graduated this year, major in biochem. Good luck in your application😀

I got my 2nd choice date, but they are pretty quick to confirm (2-3 days, I think?).
Yup, once you get your confirmation e-mail you will get a schedule of the day as well as who your interviewer is. I looked mine up and tried to have some specific questions for her in case a related topic came up. It didn't, though, hehe. I did ask her to give a specific example of the competencies they are putting into place, because I knew she personally had developed some for the Immunology clerkship.
On a related note, the new curriculum sounds pretty great and is based on real-world situations/competencies. I just hope they implement everything well for the first class to have them (i.e. us!!)

that's so funny. i was there a few weeks ago (but mstp) and i couldn't get a straight answer about what the curriculum was going to be like. then again, there was a curriculum meeting that day, maybe they made some decisions?...

Well, I directly asked my interviewer about a specific example of the competencies. There are like different tiers, such as basic science, global knowledge, processes, etc. Her example was that you have a patient that is not responding to this certain treatment. The competency is to be able to discuss the process you follow in order to successfully treat or rediagnose this patient.

So that sounds like something you need to be able to do in the 4th year. I am not sure how integrated these are going to be in the first two years. I think part of it though is related to all the standard patients & clinical exposure that we would get starting the first year. But yeah, they really are not specific about what changes are being made or how they are going to be rated.

I think there's a lot of controversy surrounding the MED 2010 initiative (its former name). When I first heard about it 2 years ago, it proposed some radical curriculum changes. However, when they presented it on the interview day, it has been drastically scaled back in scope. I've heard that lots of the professors rebelled against the changes, but I don't know what they were or why.

In theory I think it sounds like a good idea. Certainly the way medicine is practiced today is different from 20-30 years ago but I don't think the way medicine is taught has reflected this. I'm glad Minnesota is taking some initiative, but I don't think they even know how the education process should change.

Of course, I don't have anything to back up my "changing medicine, changing education" claim, what do you guys think?

MED 2010 was the former deans plan (Dean Powell), and a lot of it went out the door when the new dean came in (Dean Cerra).. I think the curricular changes they are making they are going to be great.. A lot more early clinical experiences with the mandatory 2 1/2 day clinical experiences a week..

Congratulations! I'm still waiting to see my secondary. : (

Interview with a faculty pediatrician, and I showed a strong interest in pediatrics in my whole application. For people who have already interviewed, how was it to interview with somebody in your area of interest (if the person was)?

I had Dr. Peirera, I think. Is that who you have? She was nice enough. I'm not interested in pediatrics at all really. My app points to Cards all the way.

Can anyone instruct me on how they deliver status updates? Secondary has been complete for a while and made some good connections while I was there this summer.

Would love to be in MN this year since my wife-to-be wants desperately to live in her hometown. Lots of family there too.

After the secondary is submitted, everything comes by email (or a phone call if your accepted)
