Hi all,

While I'm from Texas, I didn't go to university there, so this whole "match" process is completely foreign to me! So a quick question: I pre-matched to UTSW (!) but because I liked UTH more on interview day, I had ranked UTH #1 and UTSW #2. I'm currently on the waitlist at UTH, but does this mean that if I'm taken off the waitlist, I automatically go to UTH and my acceptance to UTSW disappears? In other words, do I basically not have a choice after that?

Even though I originally liked UTH more (seemed way more laid back), after looking more into UTSW and talking to people, I'm getting pretty excited about it! Should I cancel my waitlist spot at UTH?

Also, unrelated to the match, what are the international health opportunities like at UTSW? I've been living abroad for a while, so I'd really like to continue working internationally.

Thanks!

If I remember correctly, you will get an offer from UTH and you have 2 weeks to choose? However, if you're sure that you want to go to UTSW maybe you can contact the schools to somehow let them know this.

From what I remember, UTSW has a lot of international opportunities. They have a MD w/ a Distinction in International Health or something that basically means like 16 weeks abroad. They had people going to a lot of places, but especially India, Haiti, and other parts of Central America.

Sorry if you were looking for a more specific answer, it wasn't really what I was interested in so I wasn't paying that much attention.

UTSW has a TON of international opportunities. They have planned spring break/summer/christmas break trips to Haiti, Juarez Mexico, and others, as well as chances to do clinical rotations abroad. There is also a ton of support if you want to go somewhere else: lots of people to help you set it up, and right now anyway, everyone gets funding to cover 50% of the cost of any international trip (as long as it's at least 7 days)

You are very fortunate to have been waitlisted at UTH because this is the only scenario in which you have a choice. If you had matched at UTH on match day, UTSW would have been off the table completely. At this point, if i'm not mistaken, if you get off the waitlist at UTH you can accept their offer and you will have until May 15 to decide. Which would probably be a good thing since you still seem unsure about where you would like to go. Personally, I wouldn't turn any school down until I was 110% sure of where I wanted to be.

But just as the other 2 posters stated, UTSW has plenty of abroad opportunities and they will even allow you to create more if you have connections in a certain area.

Good luck with your choice!!!

I have some sad news for y'all.🙁

Your class attendance is gonna be even lower than ours, since we just got video recording for first year courses.😎

Hi

I just got accepted to SW yesterday. I am IS ( Interview back in December).
Good luck to all of you who are still waiting.

Did you send an update of any kind after the match??

Did you send an update of any kind after the match??

according to the alternate list email, they dont accept any updates:

January is now past and you may be wondering about your status on the UT Southwestern Alternate List. At this time we are slightly oversubscribed and did not offer any seats through the Texas Match.

Are you on the UT Southwestern alternate list? As an interviewed applicant, as long as you do not withdraw from UT Southwestern consideration, you are on the alternate list. Receiving this email confirms you are currently on our alternate list.

If you are holding a place at another school, is it still possible to receive
an offer from UT Southwestern. Yes. However, after June 15 no medical school in Texas may offer a position to an applicant already accepted by another medical school in Texas.

What about a letter of intent? As long as you remain on the alternate list (you do not withdraw yourself from consideration) we presume your intention is active. No additional information is necessary.

What is your place on the list? UT Southwestern does not rank the alternate list and will resume 'rolling' admissions as places in the class become available.

What should you do now? The hardest thing we can ask of you: wait.
There is nothing more you can do to alter, supplement, or improve your application. We have your academic credentials, letters, evaluations, course reports.

What should you expect? You can expect an email from us in about six weeks with updates about our alternate list. It is possible the 'update' will be 'no update' as we cannot predict when/if additional seats will become available. We will do our utmost to make the message as specific as possible knowing it will never be as specific as you would like.

We will make additional offers of admission through the spring and summer as accepted applicants withdraw to attend other medical schools or defer their enrollment. At this time there is no way to know how many additional offers will be extended.

Did you send an update of any kind after the match??

No I did not send them anything after my interview or the match. It was rather unexpected. I didn't think I would hear back from them so early.
Good luck!

Do you mind posting your stats? I wonder how many they have accepted from the waitlist so far...

I'm IS, interviewed back in October, and would LOVE to go to UTSW!

Well, I personally know about 3 or 4 people (+2 on SDN) who've gotten in, and its a fairly small sample size. I know they usually accept about...150 - 100?

I would imagine that now that a lot of out of state schools are starting to announce acceptances that UTSW will slowly start to lose some of the students they have accepted.

Sweet! I hope to graduate med school without going to class, looks like I'm in luck!

I'm a little hesitant to feel special that I got a random status update from UTSW about the waitlist.

Could someone burst my bubble and tell me it was a mass email?

Consider your bubble burst my friend.

I am currently an MS1 living at Cityville, (http://www.cityvilleswmd.com/),
which is located on 2222 Medical District Dr. and is one of the closest apartment complexes you can find. They building is very new and they have some really nice floor plans and amenities. If you can place a hold on an apartment at the right time, you can find some pretty nice deals too. They also have restaurants (Jimmy John's and Thai2go) within the complex. Lots of med students choose to live there for the price, convenience, and facilities.

If any of you are interested in living at Cityville and in splitting the $500 referral, please feel free to PM.

I have been following this thread for a bit but have never chimed in...seeing the previous post with the email in it I thought I should add the email I received. I am sure some of you have gotten it in response to questions about the waitlist. But for those who haven't asked this is what I got back:

March 25, 2010

Greetings from UT Southwestern!

No news is good news?

It is my guess you will not agree. It is, however, where we find ourselves today.

UT Southwestern has extended 34 offers since February 1st.

Is this uncommon? No. It is true that many of the private medical schools were
completing their final interview and committee review dates in mid-February.
As those offers are extended we anticipate additional movement in the number
of students who will withdraw their seats at UT Southwestern to accept another
offer.

I will write again in May with any updates.

Keep breathing, and don't hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Are there any accepted OOS'ers out there who are considering giving up their seat here?

I'm wondering about the same thing? I'm really hoping for some oos movement on the waitlist in the coming months!:xf:

have people received their financial aid stuff back? if not, does anyone know when we can expect them?

All I've gotten is a confirmation that they have all of my financial aid information. I think they told us to accept more information in mid-late april?

Just got Financial Aid today....honestly not sure what I need each year cause this looks like too much...

Got mine today, too.

I agree with you, jennynwan. There does seem to be some extra built in.

whats the best way to go about asking utsw for more scholarships/grants and less loans?

Dear UTSW,

Got accepted elsewhere, but I am saving myself for you!

Love,
miborovsky

(OOS people... don't hang on like leeches! 😛 )

So any movement here? Anyone get in here through the wait list yet?

i havent heard anything. i think may 15th is the beginning of movement.

i got an acceptance offer yesterday around 6 pm so wait list movement is happening (check your email!). this completely threw me off as i had pretty much given up on this school. i am very grateful of course but was all set for UT Houston (already signed a lease with med students). this was my number one choice (UT Houston was a close second) but now since its so late its going to be a tough decision 😕

So the acceptance offer was through email. Good to know.

Just got an emailed acceptance.

I am totally keeping it.

this is making me go crazy. congrats everyone! lots of movement already!

been a long time lurker, finally decided to sign up.

Bluffer, I was in the same situation you were, I was holding prematch offers from both UTSW and UTH, this was def. a tough decision. Both are good schools and you'll receive a great education no matter which one you choose.
My dad interviews for residency positions and he said that the schools reputation and ranking really matter when you are applying for residency, esp. for competitive ones. Program directors know what schools are highly ranked and they seek those candidates.
thats why I chose UTSW, for my future job outlook I think it'll be more beneficial for me. idk thats my two cents!

Good luck deciding!

is may 15th the day that everyone must narrow down choices to one school?

Yes. It seems UTSW is making moves as soon as they get slots back, rather than waiting until they get the whole stack.

- If you have more than one, please pick one ASAP.
- If you are still waiting, best of luck to you. I know your pain.
- If you get accepted off the waitlist, please celebrate only semi-responsibly.

For those of you that have been accepted off the wait-list - congrats!

For those of us that are still on the wait-list... could you please tell us what you did to get accepted? Send in updates, get more LORs, bug the secretary? Any advice? Please?

Thanksssss!
