Rejection in the mail today. Kind of ironic given my recent posts, but life goes on.

Good luck to all of you still waiting!

Sorry to hear it. I fear that I'm not close behind you. I figure a rejection now is better than one on March 15th though.

Thanks again for all the good info you've posted here.

Interesting stuff, thanks for posting. It confirms my thoughts that it's not the school you go to that determines how you do on the boards, it's your own personal attitude and preparation.

I had another question for you if you're willing to answer. As an M3 (and M4), where are you doing the majority of your rotations? Are you mostly staying up at the University Hospital, or do they send you out into some other clinics and facilities across the Wasatch Front? I interviewed at the U back in the early fall, so they may have told us then, but I don't remember. It was also one of my first interviews, and I wasn't really curious about M3/M4 rotation locations at the time.

MS3 rotations depend on which core rotation you are on.
Internal Medicine - University of Utah Medical Center (UUMC), VA, IMC
Surgery - UUMC, VA, IMC, Primary Childrens Medical Center (PCMC)
OB/GYN - UUMC, IMC/LDS
Psych - UNI, UUMC, VA
Peds - PCMC
Family Medicine - You can pretty much choose anywhere you want. This is your one opportunity to go to some rural clinic, your own family docs office, you name it.

* BTW - You are placed into your rotations by lottery, so you really aren't guaranteed to do your rotation at a specific place. Also, the university spots have to fill up before you can go to IMC. That being said depending on the rotation and 6week interval there is nobody at IMC. It depends on the numbers I guess. Bottom line is that you aren't always in control of you rotation schedule.

MS4 rotations are primarily done at UUMC being that they are sub-I's and electives and these are usually found in the university setting. However, if you going into family medicine you don't have to necesarrily do it at the U. Also, 4th year is the time to do away rotations (i.e. audition rotations). Especially if you are going into a competitive specialty.

have any idaho applicants heard anything yet? i interviewed in the fall and I haven't heard anything since.

Thanks hell's son. Hopefully if they make you wait two more months it will at least be good news.

I am from Idaho, and have not heard anything yet. I am guessing all of the Idaho applicants won't hear back until March. Is that true?

Look guys, everyone is always trying to figure out UofU admissions process when in reality there is not much to figure out.

Here is the bottom line (from a medical student's perspective)- UofU will let you know as soon as they know. Think of the applicant pool as 3 parts.

#1- The Gotta Have 'Em - They offer admission to these students after a single look at their application. Naturally, these are the applicants that they see as being the most well rounded and apt to succeed in their medical school. These applicants are likely to have great GPA, MCAT, excelled in all the other 6 areas of ECs and interviewed well. These applicants will often receive correspondence between Nov - Jan.

#2- The Thanks for Applying Group - These are the students that get the rejection after a single look. This is a mixed batch of applicants. These students may be stellar in one or more of the 8 required areas, but were deficient in the rest or did not interview well. The 40+ MCAT scores that end up with rejections typically fall into this arena. Great scores, but can't talk themselves out of a wet paper bag during the interview, arrogant, etc. Interviewers have likely done this many times and recognize the odor of s*** when they smell it, so they get the rejection. Unfortunately though, there are some pretty stellar applicants in this pool, but because of the way the admissions process is set up with the 8 separate areas of focus they don't gain admission due to some deficiencies in those areas. These applicants will likely receive rejection letters between Nov - Feb, depending on when they interviewed. They will likely gain acceptance into another school however. Also, from this group are the applicants who are all around less qualified but met the minimum requirements for an interview. Again, as soon as the admissions committee knows they won't be offering a position to the applicant the letter goes out.

#3- The Prayers, Waiters, Hopefuls - Probably the larger of the three groups. These are the applicants who are strong --> above avg. in the majority of the 8 areas. From experience, looking and speaking with classmates, etc, it seems as though these are the probably strong in ~5-6 of the 8 areas of focus during the admissions process and avg in ~2-3 of the 8. These are the students that could essentially go either way, but in order for the committee to make a decision between all these applicants they want to see them all first, so they can make a proper comparison between this group and come up with their final list. From this group come the applicants that make up the average students in the group (i.e. 30 MCAT, 3.6GPA, etc), from this group also come the mind bogglers (i.e. 25-26 MCAT, or <3.5GPA, etc). Although, it does seem however that these students are few, and have excelled in all other areas considered by the committe. This group will likely receive correspondence (acceptance, rejection, or waitlist) in March-April.

So, in summary. You will find out as soon as they know. Whether accepted or rejected they send out the letters once they have decided. The question is; which group are you? If you haven't heard yet then statistically your chances of acceptance are increasing. By far the vast majority of acceptances will not be given until March-April. If you get a letter between now and then.....well, 9:1 odds that it will be a rejection.

Idaho students, it seems as though almost all, 90-95% (i.e. all but 1 or 2) will receive correspondence in March - Apr, due to the fact that there are so few Idaho positions and they will want to see all applicants before they make any final decisions.

Good Luck to you all. Hang in there for those who are still waiting. For those holding the coveted acceptance. Strong work. You will love it!

That seems like a pretty accurate representation of what goes on I guess. I liked what you said about the "mind bogglers."

Just curious - does anyone know when U plans to finish their final interviews?

I'd speculate that they'd have to be done by late Feb/early March because they're supposedly going to let us all know by March 15th...

have any new "letters" been sent out recently?

Hey Toketa why don't you get a life instead of lurking on this board all the time...naaah just kidding bro. Nothing new here. I talked to a friend that goes to a school north of us that applied and he said he hasn't heard anything either, but at his institution there were mostly people getting rejected, as is the case at our school.

Its a good thing I know you personally!!!!! and besides, what else am I going to do as I wait, and wait, and wait, and wait and wait and wait and wait and.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................wait.

How did all of you feel about your interviews at Utah? I wonder if feeling good about them has any correlation with the eventual outcomes...

I personally don't believe that there is any correlation. I have heard numerous accounts from individuals who did terrible on their interviews and they still got in as well as individuals feeling really good about their interviews and they get a speedy rejection.

That being said, positive thinking can't hurt your chances! 🙂

Since we are coming ever so close to the March 15th "date of truth", I was wondering how many of us are still in the "third" catagory mentioned in the prior post. This would include any of us who have interviewed but have yet to recieve an acceptance or rejection.

If you fall into this catagory, respond by posting a +1.

I would guess that perhaps 5-10% of the applicants who interviewed at the U are SDN followers. If that is the case, then we can speculate the number of appicants who are still in the running. (I think I remember hearing that they interview 500 applicants for the class)

And by the way, before you start tearing apart and scrutinizing my numbers/logic, I want to remind you that this is just for fun and is only speculation. I know that it is most likely very inaccurate (if you have a different estimate on the numbers please post) and that ultimately, there is no way to predict or determine your ultimate outcome at this school. I just thought that it would be something to do to pass the time and get this thread going.

You've got a lot of time to think about this stuff, don't ya? Who am I kidding, though, I think about it at least once a day myself.

You know, your numbers and logic are way off . . . I kid. 😀 +1. Anyone else sitting on another acceptance? I see now why deposits are non-refundable.

I have another acceptance...thank goondess, but don't let them know. But yeah, I dunno what you're talking about because my deposit is 100% refundable.

Actually the U will know by March, if they don't already, of all the acceptances any of their applicants have received.

I thought the date that schools have access to acceptance information is May 15th.

That was my understanding of how it worked. I would trust Utah3219 though, he seems to know what he's talking about on most issues.

Just curious, when did everyone interview? I interviewed 1/14

Good Luck!!:luck:

May 15th is the day applicants are to commit to one school and withdraw all other offers. If you hold on to an acceptance beyond this date and don't attend in the fall, then they will not return your $100 deposit.

Thanks for the clarification... I didn't even know that March 15th date existed to see what acceptances students were sitting on.

So I glanced through the thread that you posted a link to several posts below the one I've quoted, and unless I'm mistaken it seems as though the final conclusion of that thread is that come March 15th, a school will be able to see the acceptances held only by those applicants that they themselves have accepted, not all of their applicants as you describe. Am I wrong here? I really can't imagine that AMCAS would give schools that kind of information in March, before the school has made a final decision regarding the applicant. But I haven't really done any searching other than what I read in the thread you linked to. Anyone have any more information?

Well, fellow Utahns, I just got my rejection letter today from the U. It's a bummer, but I kinda expected it. I figure it's better to get rejected now than let them string me on until March 15th. Maybe I'll see some of you in Virginia, Ohio, Wisconsin, or any of the other Utah/Out of State friendly institutions that we all most likely applied to. They are probably better schools than Utah anyway. Good luck to the rest of you.

Sorry to hear you got rejected but that is awesome you have other choices. Do you mind if I ask you when you interviewed. I'm trying to roughly find out when I will hear back.

I posted right below this but I was trying to respond to your post...sorry.

For what it's worth I interviewed early October. But like Utah3219 said, it doesn't matter too much when you interviewed.

+1 ... sorry to hear about the rejection... if you don't mind me asking: did your status page change?
