oh well good luck then!!!hopefully ill see you in august when it all starts🙂. In some ways i wish it was august lol. during my gap year i get to work 2 full time jobs to pay the bills. Id rather be in school , the real world isnt as fun lol. 😛

Ah so news has arrived from Madison. Alternate list for me. Anyone know if there's a separate OOS waitlist?

My roommate just told me the gist of the letter over the phone and left out any details, if there were any.

Ahhhh please send an acceptance letter for me. I should get news in the coming weeks. Hopefully good news, i'll keep you guys posted. I have 5 more interviews coming up but I'm hoping for an offer from UW so I can cancel the other ones and say I'm coming!

Good luck and happy holidays!

Koko, how long did it take for your post-interview decision letter?

nooo🙁...someone in this thread said something like there is a seperate WL for OOS. If thats the case your chances are probably better since it seems many OOS they accept never end up here from the data they gave us on interview day. Good luck man hope you would get in here

I'm very sorry to hear that Koko! I'm 95% sure they have separate IS and OOS waiting lists.

Koko, I'm so sorry! I had my fingers crossed for an outright acceptance for you. I still hope you'll get off the waitlist and join us in the fall 👍

I can say that for past years there have been IS and OOS waitlists, and I'm pretty sure that hasn't changed this year. Once the interview season is over at UW they rank everyone on the waitlists, so at that time you should find out what number you are on the OOS list. As people start to drop spots closer towards May 15th and periodically throughout the summer, people get pulled from the waitlists. If an IS person drops they pull #1 from the IS list, if an OOS person drops they pull #1 from the OOS list and so on. The OOS list usually gets more movement because OOSers are more likely to go to a different school but how many they take from the waitlist in any given year varies. Hope this helps and best of luck! :luck:

Yay! That's great news. Like Elijah, UW is my top choice unless CA decides to stop boycotting me.

To answer the timing question, it took around 7 weeks to hear back. Good luck jojo!!

Not entirely true. My experience has been that this list moves even during the interview season. I for example was placed on the waitlist Jan but was accepted about three weeks later. I do believe we have separate instate and out-state waitlists as there needs to be a certain percentage of each class that is instate and these lists move for the most part independent of th other.

Interesting news. Thanks for letting us know!

Been on the alternate list for over a month and I'm running out of popcorn🙁... really hope to hear from them. Did anyone else email or set up a meeting with UWSMPH to see why they weren't accepted? I'm thinking about setting up a meeting but not sure if it would be worth it to not just find out via email. Anyone have advice?
I'll throw another bag into the microwave i guess and keep waiting:corny:

I think an in-person meeting (if you can get it) is always better/more productive than an e-mail. This is just my opinion though, not based on actual experience with your situation.

Hm I totally forgot that we're able to ask for the committee's concerns.

I asked for advice last year after a pre-interview rejection and had to call in. I'm not even sure they'll tell you via e-mail, but let me know if they do! I want to make sure I get off the alternate list in the Spring.

I called the admissions office a little while ago and she said you can email someone and set up a correspondence with them to find out why or schedule a meeting with the admissions office to discuss what they think you should do to strengthen your app. She mentioned the alternate list letter having contact info but I forgot it at my parent's house so I have to wait until I get some time off of work to get it. Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a shot, then.

I'm staring at my alternate list letter right now and the only contact info on there is a phone number.

It's weird that the letter makes it sound as if we can come off the list at any time:

"As positions become available, we send letters of acceptance to selected alternates"
if i end up in wisconsin im making sure you get off that list :meanie:. Either that or if i withdraw...i can slip them an extra note saying to let koko in...😛

Interview invite today. OOS, complete early October.

Complete 9/10/09
Interview Invite 1/5/10

OOS, interview scheduled for early March

Interviewed on Dec. 4th and starting to get antsy.

Can anyone who received an acceptance describe the thickness of the acceptance envelope? 😛

... and any post interview rejects, what that envelope looked like? lol

I think I heard a while back that they both come in thin white envelopes. Rejection has ~1 sheet, acceptance has 2+. Perhaps someone with experience though can say for sure though.

The acceptance letter is a small normal envelope that has maybe 3-4 papers in it. Don freak out if you don't get a large envelope. It's just a few papers folded into thirds like a normal piece of mail u would get

Hey Oshkosh, we interviewed on the same day, what table were you at? PM me.

Accepted =)

Congrats Dec. 4 interviewees. Hopefully i'll hear good news sooooooon! C'mon UW-Go Badgers!:xf::xf::xf:🙂😀

hey guys what was the projected wait time between interview and decision?

Since no one has posted good news in a while, here are some stats from the 2008-2009 thread. I am not sure if they are exact:

-It seems ~20 IS applicants were taken from the waitlist last cycle.

-Someone posted last year: "In the past five years, the max number of people accepted from the waitlist is 29." Posted by medical student windcolour

Don't medical schools try to reduce how many they accept from the alternate list or is that a myth?

Does anyone have a clue how many people are typically placed on the alternate list?

I just interviewed there, and they mentioned that the facilities are very new. They said they used to normally had a class of 150, which they filled by first sending out 200 acceptances. Usually, they would get 75 (all else turn down Madison), and then the other 75 would come from the waitlist. However, when they built the new facilities, they sent out 200 like normal, but nobody turned them down, causing them to be overbooked by 50. As a result, they promised free tuition for the first year to get people to defer acceptance.

I'm guessing that your ~20 IS from the waitlist is affected by this, whether from the overbooked, or from the year after. I'm not sure what they do currently, but still have hope!

hey are decision letters going to amcas permanent or mailing addresses?

I just wanted to say that the new facilities were completed in 2004 and the school's name was changed to the UWSMPH in 2006. The class size has been between 150-168 for the past five years. Some of those students each year are MD/PhD students (usually 8-10), med scholars students, and students that deferred. However, the med scholars program has been discontinued so the number of students from that program taking spots has steadily declined from the 30s to between 8-12 for the last two years. Also, this year should be the last year that any med scholars will be taking spots in the med school class (the discontinuation was several years ago).

It is true that right after the new facilities were built (entering class of 2005 I believe?) the class was overfull due to more students who were outright accepted who decided to come to UW. The school did promise a full year's tuition for those that would defer for a year, but that was not last year and as far as I know med students are not allowed to defer for more than one year. Therefore, those students that did defer won't be taking spots in the entering class of 2010. Now that the med school has gone through several admissions cycles post-new facilities they again know about how many students to accept as not to overfill the class. Pre-new facilities they were accepting 188-197 ISers and 70-80 OOSers to fill ~150 spots, and ended up accidentally filling 163 for 2005 when they went over. Post-new facilities they have increased their class size a little (on purpose this time 🙂) and have been accepting ~175 ISers and ~95-100 OOSers to fill ~168 spots.

As far as IS vs. OOS alternate lists I can tell you that according to last year's numbers 76% of IS accepted applicants end up matriculating at UW, while only 35% of OOS accepted applicants do. About 62% of the accepted applicants last year were IS with the remainder being OOS (including out-right acceptances and applicants evetually taken off the alternate list). So you can see that the OOS list would have more movement than the IS list, but that both lists have a decent amount of movement (~20 ISers coming from the alternate list seems about right to me). Sorry this is really long everyone 😳 and I sincerely wish everyone on the alternate list the best of luck and hope to see you in the fall! :luck:

for OOS students the waitlist movement has to be great. If you look at the interview packet they accept like 130 OOS and somewhere around 35 or so matriculate? Those arent exact but they are low i remember that much. Koko you will get in most likely 😉.

Quick update: 11 students who were accepted last year decided to defer and matriculate in 2010 so not a huge number.

Haven't heard anything since being complete mid-July. Still holding on for an interview! I have some awesome updates I can give them during the interview if I get one. Otherwise it looks like I will reapply next year!

Hang in there :luck:!!! Not including this week, there are still six interview dates (according to their interview feedback survey).

Has any one else from the Dec. 4th interviews been accepted besides the beast Nosurprise?

Since I am not in the Madison area, I was offered the opportunity to discuss the alternate list over the phone.

My mind this year: "UWSMPH UWSMPH UWSMPH...."

So I have questions about next year I want to ask the med school, but no one ever picks up the calls to the admissions dept and no one is answering my emails. I am getting a little annoyed and beginning to wonder if it really is like undergrad all over again where faculty really doesn't care about the students... I also wonder if i should be contacting the admissions department or if there is someone new i talk to now that i am accepted. but i can't ask these questions if they never pick up the phone...

Hmm...wierd, I've been contacting the admissions office about questions about every other week and they've always answered for me. I'll PM you an alternate contact buffy, maybe that will give you some better luck. :xf:

I left a voice mail on the number they gave me (alternate list letter) and someone else returned my phone call the following day... have you tried this yet?

I called today to inquire about the status of my application and the lady on the phone today let me know that I was accepted and my letter went out in the mail yesterday.

Complete 8/5
Interview 12/18

Check out the student handbook under 'current students' to find the right area/person to answer your question. My experience was that it was hard to get in touch with anyone in the admissions office d/t the volume of calls they receive.

I can honestly say the longest I have had to wait for a response to any question was about two days since arriving here, and that was because someone was out sick. Again, so different from the undergrad campus experience.

And now... back to studying; block exams next week 😱

In regards to 3rd and 4th year clinical rotations, are these rotations all done in Madison?

no and unless you have some need to stay in madison (like you have kids in the area and cant leave) you cant really avoid it i was told. I believe also if you have no car they try to keep you from doing some of the far away rotations.

I believe a part of our acceptance letter that we signed and sent back in last year said we understand we may be out of Madison for potentially 6 months of 3rd and 4th year. The upside is learning how different environments/communities operate- and if someone has an interest in say, surgery, there are locations where you will get more exposure to procedures b/c the normal hierarchy of a tertiary care center is not in place.

But it is not for everyone- just something to think about!

How does the housing work? Do they link you up with housing, or are you on your own? Is this a potential downside from your experiences?

Accepted! Interviewed Dec 11, Letter received Jan 25th! IS. Woooh! no more interviews!

If I remember, they provide housing- although the type varies from location to location...

Congrats to all who have been accepted- hang in there to those on the wait list!
