The only downside to my application was that I was charged with a misdemeanor(driving incident) that was later (by decision of judge and prosecution) reduced to a traffic violation. Everyone I called (including AMCAS) said I better list it, then to not, and err on side of caution, in case the background checks reveal the charge and I dont mention it on AMCAS. It was a stupid immature thing I did in a vehicle when I was 19 (I am 21, nearly 22 now).

How much will this negatively impact me getting an invite from Emory? (Feel free to post opinions, but this is more for students lurking this thread that are already in Emory, that may actually be able to shed some light from their experience during the interview/application process)

Thanks,

If everything else in your app is solid, one misdemeanor will not jeopardize your application. Do be prepared, however, to explain the situation in a mature concise fashion when you go on your interviews (Emory or any other school).

I have an interview on a Friday. I read on the Emory interview survey on this site that M1s have tests or quizzes every Friday, but that was from someone who posted in October of 2007. Can anyone confirm if that's true? It seems like it'd be a whole lot less worth it to stay with a student host on a Thursday before a quiz/test.

Also does anybody have a rough idea of what the schedule is for the entire day? Are the interviews first thing when you get there? Last? Etc.

Thanks

PS I'm OOS with a 3.3sci/3.5 overall and a 37 MCAT

That format has changed, and now the M1s take tests whenever a module ends 1-3wks; they do not have a test this Friday. If M1s do have a test the next day, usually an M2 will host you.
There are two interview groups, one that interviews in the morning and one in the afternoon...you go on a tour when you are not interviewing. You find out which group you are in that morning, or if you are staying with a host they can tell you the night before.

Hope this helps, good luck 🙂

edit: sorry the M1s do have a test this Friday afternoon and the M2s only have 2 hours of small group in the morning so there may not be a lot of students around as usual 🙁 but hopefully some will be around

3.93/37Q, but still have not heard back yet. IS (45 minutes away), complete 8/2. Should I call, or send an update letter?

Don't stress, interviews haven't even been going on for a month; they can only interview 36 people a week.

Great statement; really helps put things in perspective. You have successfully given me a way to calm down when SDN puts me in neurotic-applicant mode. 🙂

Interview invite today! Complete since 8/4...thought I was out of the running haha

^Congratulations!!

Complete 9/17/10. 3.86/3.88 34P MCAT. Any chance for an interview?

Do you think they would encourage an update by sending an additional (peer) letter of recommendation?

Hey so they say bring sneakers for the tour. Does that mean wear dress shoes to your interview and change to sneakers for the tour, or does it mean we can just show up in sneakers?

you would want to have dress shoes for the interviews, but I'm fairly certain the "bring walking shoes" is mostly targeted at women who are wearing heels or something of that nature. At my interview I don't remember anyone changing shoes and everyone seemed to walk around just fine

hmmmmmm does that mean I can't change into my flip flops?? (I am only half serious). I am already in Atlanta for my interview this monday and I only brought flip flops and high heels. I think I will just stick to the heels....

Hah! I just re-read the interview confirmation and it says in bold and all caps that flip flops are not allowed. Definitely wearing heels.

Haha yeah stick with the heels... its really not THAT much walking. Good luck though, they do an incredible job with the interview day, and the interviews are painless / verry laid back. Grady is awesome.

I was just recently there and they stuck with the 11/2 day and seemed pretty determined to mail them out by then.

That seemed to be my feeling also, but they really seemed to stress that they are very conservative with acceptances early on, so I'm not getting my hopes up at all really. Maybe come February or something

That makes no sense, at least not to me. Their website shows that October 15 is the last day to submit an application, so shortly thereafter Emory knows the MCAT score and GPA data for each applicant. Obviously, if you are granted an interview, you meet their criteria for being accepted and the rest is up to you. If you have the numbers and have a positive interview, why would they delay sending you an acceptance?

😕 Just because the deadline is Oct. 15 and they have all their applications for the season does not mean that they have reviewed every single application. There may be an application that may not be strong numbers-wise, but the applicant may have some great essays, strong LORs, and is very unique. So they may give that person an invite and end up giving that person an acceptance. Numbers only does not an interview grant.

Except that it REALLY does give you an interview invite. While numbers alone do not, very few applicants have 3.9+ and 38+ with nothing on their work/activities. 3.9+ and 38+ usually shows commitment, drive, AND intelligence. I really doubt that such people will have nothing to show for activities, PS, and LORs. If they work hard in school, then would it be that far of a stretch to say that they work in all aspects of their lives. And besides, almost everyone does some research, some clinical volunteering, and some sort of leadership. It may be a shock to those of us who are mortal and have less than stellar numbers (like me 😵), some of the best/unique activities each application cycle come from higher stats people (it was pretty shocking for me).

I'd say the opposite has been true as well as far as people with below average numbers having some of the greatest experiences I've heard of, so it's hard to generalize.

I think this just shows you can't guarantee what will be on someone's application based on their numbers, which is precisely why they would wait to review every application carefully and actually interview a significant number of the competitive applicants before offering acceptances.

It may make it more stressful by making you wait longer, but it really just shows me that they actually take the time to review every applicant they interview very carefully before offering acceptances.

There really is no magical formula to how they select the first acceptances...it's a good old fashioned a lot of people sit in a room and give their commentary on each person (I've been in the next room before on the day of decision making). I was accepted on the first date and had below average stats (according to MSAR...) while my friend had above average stats and we both got accepted on the first date.

All you can do is be yourself once you get to your interview 🙂

Wow, after interviewing here friday and having another today, it is almost unfair for today's school. The bar Emory set was so high that I feel I was almost spoiled as far as interview days go. This school is truly amazing.

Then why offer any acceptances until you have reviewed every candidate who has interviewed?

While I claim no particular back room knowledge of what goes on with admissions' committees, there have to be certain standards in place or the process would bog down. Grades and MCAT's need to be at certain levels if for no other reason than to reflect rankings. Prerequisites have to be met. LOR's need to be good. Research, volunteering, etc. need to have been performed.

As I said in my earlier post, Emory knows who their candidates are by October 15. I may be wrong, but I don't believe it is accidental that some candidates are chosen for interviews at the outset of the application process and accepted early in the cycle. The process doesn't happen on a whim. Some applicants may have something special to offer but most of us fit within a set of guidelines. If you are a good candidate October 15, you are a good candidate January 15. After we interview, they will know if they want us or not. What is gained by waiting? That seems to be illogical as would be the suggestion that Emory is very conservative with their acceptances early in the process.

the fact that you think logic applies to any part of this admissions process amuses me.😛 lol

I think most of us would agree that while there is a lot of confusion in the med school application process, your comment didn't address the point I was making.

Absolutely OUTSTANDING interview day. Wonderful school and amazing faculty, staff and students. Even everyone interviewing was great! Please please PLEASE Emory show me some acceptance love! :xf:

How did you find out about interview invites? Email? Do they also have any other status updates on the site we filled in our secondary?

Pretty sure it's just email only. I checked my status page and it doesn't have any info beyond date of app completion...

Interviewed here yesterday, was really impressed with the school and the people. Hoping to hear good news!

If they do not get a response via email to an interview invite, do they typically try to resend the email or call?

I am just curious, this is almost more of a general then emory specific question. But what happens if your spam/trash filter, or an error prevents you from receiving the one and only email that says you get an interview?

Complete 9/17 3.86/3.88 34P. Really Hoping to get an interview invite.

I heard emory interviews later than other schools, I have been complete since 8/3 and still have not heard back.

Got a call from the dean on Friday. In like Flynn🙂

Crazy, they pretty much swore when I was there on Friday that they would NOT call or e-mail about acceptances, only send out letters on Tuesday. Anyways, if it's true that's sick. Congratulations.

Anyone know if Economics courses count toward the 18 semester hour humanities/social science requirement?

I know it's not listed on their site as an example of these types of courses but hopefully a current student will know the answer.

Thanks

I just got an interview invite this morning and since I was an econ major I used almost all econ courses for the requirement. I hope that indirectly answers your question.

Yea, I received an interview invite also as a finance major (I've completed a 3 econ courses along with some AP history/psych credit that should give me 18). But I wanted to make sure that I don't need to register for some humanities class next semester.

I don't think getting an interview necessarily means you've met all the course requirements though...which is why I'm still not sure of the answer.

Do you mind sharing when you were complete?

Sorry for confusion, it's the dean of diversity, he calls all the urm students or something like that. Letters mailed last Friday or today. Good luck everyone!
