Hey guys, I have an interview this Friday and was wondering if anyone stayed at the Marriott? If so, how long does it take you to walk to the interview in the morning? It looks kind of far on the map, but I'm guessing it can't be that bad if that's the suggested hotel.

It's about a mile (20 min walk) from the hotel to the med school. It's also on a main road, Hempstead Turnpike, and it may or may not be covered in snow, since we're supposed to get a storm Thursday PM into Friday morning.

I would look in to a taxi or shuttle from the hotel/school. Walking would suck, majorly, on Friday.

Yeah I agree I would take a taxi from the Marriott...it is quite a walk across the parking lot of the hotel to get to the main road.. and once you enter Hofstra on Hempstead Tpke you'd have to walk across 2 parking lots to get to the School of Medicine..it is do-able but again with snow, I'm not sure if you want to! 🙂

Thanks for the tip guys! That's kind of what I was thinking once I read the weather report. Nothing like showing up for an interview looking (and feeling) like a wet dog.

Anyone with a November interview get any good news from Hofstra? It seems like last friday acceptances were all October interviews. Lets hope this friday is good news for November interviews!!! :xf:

Hopefully. Maybe this Friday? I interviewed 11/15 and haven't heard anything.

yep, first week november here...silence

last week of October here - this wait is starting to get frustrating, I just want to know already! Even if it's a rejection/waitlist, I'd rather just know so I can move on instead of hanging in limbo like this.

I actually got an interview invite last Friday the 14th. Super surprised becuz I only sent in the secondary app on the last possible day, Dec. 15th. Scheduled for Feb 8. Would love to get in here, it's one of my top choices!

You think that's surprising? Got one on the same day and i didn't send a secondary

i want my money back!!! =)

Lol this is actually the second time this has happened to me, though the first time was at a much larger institution. Previously, I called the school after the interview and they said it was okay since it was just a fee with no questions.

I guess we'll see what happens in Hofstra

any MD/PhD kids get accepted yet?

interviewed last week... no word yet.

you MD/PhD? I wonder how many applicants there were. I was only given a choice of 2 days to interview from.

You must have some great Stats!!

interview end of Oct here too, nothing yet.....

it's not over till it's over! Until there's an actual rejection we still have hope 🙂 Good luck! Hopefully they'll send out another batch tomorrow, I'll be obsessively checking SDN and my status despite my best efforts not to lol

I interviewed on Nov. 12th.. I was accepted with the rest just so you know.. good luck!

Yeah I really don't see any reason to expect anything today or even the rest of the month. Unless they've said something specifically, we really don't know when they'll send out another round.

I called them just now. They said they haven't finished sending out the acceptances yet because they're still interviewing and it's slow right now. Also, they're not sending out acceptances in any particular order, so if you interviewed in early October (like me :X) you don't have to panic about how some of the people here who interviewed in late October or November already got acceptances.

The person I talked to said that they should be issuing status updates over the next two or three weeks, and would notify you via email. Also, they are interviewing till February 15th, so until then the updating would be a bit slow.

Cross your fingers! Good luck to all of us who haven't heard anything yet!

Thanks for the info! Good luck to you too! :luck:

hoping the next batch of acceptances come soon. i'm freaking out a little bit!

good luck everyone. hopefully we hear soon!

So I called and got to know that they have received about 4000 applications for 40 seats. That is everyone has 1% chance of getting in..

BTW I was one of the last people to submit the secondary in December. Anyone else who submitted around this time heard back from school?

For a new school it is surprising how many applications they received. I interviewed here last week and they also said they will have interviewed 700-800 candidates by the end of their interview cycle (mid-feb). Since it is a new school I was thinking that a lot of acceptees may not choose to matriculate if they get in elsewhere, thus bettering our odds. But after visiting the school and seeing how much better and more exciting their curriculum and teaching methods will be, the enormous amount of resources at their disposal with the NSLIJ system, and 20K per year scholarship, it will be hard for anyone to pass it up. Anyway good luck to all who applied here

Anyone know how difficult it is to find housing nearby campus? And the price range?

Why would you want to live off campus? The grad dorm is subsidized significantly, and since there's only 40 students, wouldn't you want to live together (relatively close). When I was driving around I didn't see anything that local for housing. The campus sort of expands into a commercial area.

My friend who got in is more than likely going and isn't from NY, so he'll definitely take up the dorm status again, at least for the first year. They said they're having an accepted student day in the spring, likely when 40 people accept spots ($100 deposit). I'm sure a lot of the definates will want to hash out living plans then.

Because some people, for example, may not be right out of college, perhaps a little older, have been living in apts or renting for last few years and don't want to go back to dorm life.

It exists but is on the expensive side. From what I know, I think it would be tough to be under $1,000 per month. Living on campus would be cheaper but doesn't apply to everyone (ie. significant other, pet). Definitely something to take into consideration as the cost of living is pretty high on LI... I'd still go here, regardless!

Thanks for the answers. I was just wondering if off campus would be cheaper than the subsidized on-campus dorms.

To get an idea of housing available in the area, you might want to check Craig's List. I poked around there (daydreaming that I might get in, despite the long odds). A friend who is from the area suggested that one might be able to live in Hempstead or Old Westbury. It seems like the Hofstra student housing is competitively priced compared with what's listed on CL. However, like GoWithTheFlo and sphun65 pointed out, many folks have other good reasons that student housing would be a poor fit.
I know someone who went to law school at Hofstra who had a live-in partner, and commuted in from a part of Queens near the Jamaica LIRR station (Richmond Hill), sometimes using the railroad, sometimes driving. That area is nice, and probably cheaper, but the study patterns of a medical student might make that too much of a hassle.

well i did a quick search and it ranges from 400++, a bunch at 600-700$. price varies depending on location, pets allowed, size, etc of course

Submitted my secondary in mid-late December. Interview scheduled for Feb 11. Really excited/nervous! Though new, Hofstra appears to be a great program, and I would love the opportunity to attend.

I agree. I would really love to keep my apt because its relatively cheap, I am reluctant to start communal living again, and its nice to have a personal escape. But the commute presents a major problem.

Interviewed last week and the suspense is already killing me! They said we'd hear back in anywhere from 2 weeks to 5 months 🙂eek🙂, so I should probably chill out, but I LOVE this school. Good luck to everyone else who is waiting. :xf:

I know how you feel - I interviewed back in October and each passing day the waiting gets less and less bearable lol I'm waiting on 2 schools right now (including Hofstra) and am so sick of neurotically checking my mailbox and email inbox  It's not even the worry of not being accepted, it's just the not knowing that's so frustrating! Oh well, it's out of our hands - good luck to you too! :luck:

haha I'm in the same boat... I interviewed in November and I'm seriously having a nervous breakdown.... I just called the school and they told me that they are not sending acceptance letters in any particular order... Good luck to all of us...!

So, 800 interviews and 40 students... a 80K scholarship offered to students

How many acceptances do you think Hofstra will have to send out in the end??

Keep in mind that scholarship only brings Hofstra down to state school levels. Although I personally would pick Hofstra over a state school, I wouldn't be surprised if many people wouldn't take that risk. Then again, the overall feeling on this board seems to be pretty positive. Still, I'm putting my money on 100 acceptances.

So...would it be safe to say that those who have not received an invitation to interview will likely not receive one this late in the application process?

They're done in mid-Feb, so ya, probably unlikely. I got my interview notice about 2-3 weeks before the actual first available date, but you never know. Some kids withdraw from interviews or decline them (especially this late on).

Notices went out asking about returning student day, which talks about all 40 coming in if possible, so I'm guessing they have (or are very close to) making final decisions. However, they said they're going to interview everyone before all 40 spots get filled. The only way they can satisfy that is to accept a few this week, 10 say, and then the other 10 shortly after Feb 15th.

Of course that's assuming the first 20 all accepted.

For those who were accepted, was there anything that changed on your portal before you got notice? Yeah...I'm checking daily. 🙂

Twenty have gone out. Twenty more next week.

Yeah, have a family member working for NS. Unless they are mistaken.

Any idea what day? 🙂

are the 20 acceptances that have gone out from last year's interviews?? so anybody who interviewed last year and who didnt get accepted are either rejected or put on the waitlist??
