yea i haven't received a secondary either..hm, anyone mind posting a link if there is one on their website? i'm sure this is ok considering JHU doesn't screen

they don't "complete" applications in order, meaning someone who turns in everything after you (even a month or so) can be marked complete and reviewed before you. i suposed they look at apps in order that are marked complete, but its irrelevant because they don't complete apps in order. and i wouldnt suggest calling about your app being complete unless you wanna get yelled at.

loua0731, you will receive an email when your app is complete (a magical date that you can't predict). i believe you also receive an email after they receive your paper secondary (apparently they no longer require this as stated above so maybe this year they will do things in order???)

Haha, alright. I'll just wait for that day then. Yeah, I never received or read anything on the secondary website about having to mail them a paper copy--so they must've gotten rid of that requirement this year.

Is the essay question about what specialty you are interested in truly optional? I do not have any strong feelings towards any specialty yet, and I feel like I would be spewing BS if I answered that question...

I didn't talk about a specific specialty, but I did discuss my interest in academic medicine vs. other routes. Maybe write about that if you have an inclination and don't want to leave it blank.

Anybody else have trouble filling out the family bg stuff? the boxes don't let me type enough characters for my parents' schools and degrees... Seeing as they are out of the country schools, i don't think abberviations would suffice

at the same time, since they are out of the country schools, adcoms wont really pay attention to them anyway (except for like oxford). I abbreviated.

For the educational background, I received CC credit in high school that is listed on my AMCAS--do I need to put this down? i dont really want to.

So, my AMCAS isn't verified yet, but I'm almost done with this secondary and would like to submit it to convey my interest to the school. The only problem is that I don't have the AMCAS-verified gpa yet, which is what I'm assuming we should enter into the secondary.

I tried to calculate my AMCAS gpa myself, but I guess there's a chance that I could have made a mistake and it might be different from what ultimately gets put on my primary. Would it be bad to put the self-calculated gpa down and submit it? What happens if the two gpas don't match? Should I just wait to submit until my AMCAS gets verified?

It doesn't matter when you submit your secondary if your primary isn't there yet--they won't review your file until they've received everything. Just wait until your AMCAS is verified.

did you guys post your shadowing experience in the secondary for hopkins? if so, which section did you list it?

OK It says post your activity and degree of involvement. Does anyone kno where exactly we are supposed to put the degree of involvement?

I put the hospital shadowing in volunteering section

Where do we put honor societies? I was on the exec board of my honor society. what section does it go to?

Thats a good question. I would think it would go in the honors section. What was your position? Although even if you were President, it would still count as an honor. That's funny though, my school has no exec board for the honor societies. Are you talkin Phi Beta Kappa, or Phi Kappa Phi? or something else?

There is no exact section to post this; Just put down what you did in the description, list a contact person and put in the days you went, etc.

Does anyone mind posting the secondary? Thanks! 🙂

Is anyone having trouble uploading their photo? I've places mine in a word document (tried both 2003 and 2007 file extensions) but neither work. The file is 70kb. Grr I want to submit my secondary.

Nevermind...firefox proves victorious over internet explorer.

I'm a second year undergrad, so I'm not applying this cycle. I know one of the school's requirements is 24 hours of humanties/social science. I'm on a quarter system, and will probably be short about 3 hours when I apply. Do you think I'll automatically get screened out? I defintely will have met the requirements prior to graduation. I just trying to judge whether I should take an extra class prior to applying or not.

Does anyone know if all 24 of these hours have to be taken for letter grade credit or can it also include pass/fail?

Anyone know if they notify you when they download your letters from AMCAS or if there is somewhere on the site to check?

I was thinking about applying here since my dad got his MD from JHU, but my stats are mediocre:

3.67 cGPA, double major in Math and Biochem
3.5 years research experience
32Q (11 PS, 9 VR, 12 BS)

Does legacy influence decisions much, let alone at a top 5 med school?

I'm wondering this too. I submitted my secondary on 7/9, my AMCAS was verified 7/14 and got the "receipt of Johns Hopkins Secondary Application" email on 7/19. It says they will send an e-mail when my application is complete and ready for review by the committee on admission. Still haven't gotten that final confirmation email, so I'm not sure if I should be checking somewhere...

What do they mean by, "no hard indents?" I don't want to screw up the formatting...

Also, if I have my premed Committee letter available through AMCAS, do I need to somehow have it sent again to JHU? Do I need any additional rec letters for the secondary or is the committee letter good enough?

Pushing tab. And the committee letter will fulfill requirements. If you have extra letters you can submit them, but they aren't required as long as you send in the committee letter.

I am somewhat confused about what to write in the " not in the majority" essay. I been in many situations where I consider my self a minority, but I cant chose one over the other...
Also,am I supposed to include lessons learned or something like that ? I am not entirely sure what I learned ...

Any advice or pointers would be helpful. thanks

Edit : I am also already a Minority applicant, which makes this all too confusing.

For the LOR's they list requirements as a letter packet or individual letters Two (2) letters from faculty members in science departments who have taught you and one (1) letter from a non-science faculty member who has taught you.

I will be sending a letter packet, however in this packet I have one letter from a science faculty who taught me, one from a non-science faculty who taught me and, and one from my research mentor of 3 years, but who I have not yet taken a class with (I will be in the fall). This seems to fit the general requirement as a letter packet, but falls short on the other requirement, will I need to obtain another science letter from a faculty who taught me to meet the requirement? Thanks!

I have been verified first week of june and still hasnt gotten a secondary yet... I thought everyone would get a secondary from Hopkins?

I was verified later than you- last week of June- but still no word. I wouldn't be worried except that some people have had their secondary for three weeks already. Weird, but I guess I'll just have faith.

And no, it's not in my junk mail.

I haven't gotten a confirmation email either. And there doesn't seem to be a status page on the application site. Hopefully it's not because they haven't gotten to our apps yet haha. I submitted early July as well.

You sure the e-mail didn't get sent to your junk folder or wasn't automatically deleted?

i dont think so. I check my gmail like inifite times a day. and I didnt get any spam or trash... weird... maybe they havent gotten to mine? it has been over a month now.

I thought it would have came by now. no secondary. maybe I should email them or call them.

you can access it without receiving an invite. the invite email even says

"All of our applicants are invited to complete an on-line secondary application. If you have not yet completed the on-line secondary application, this letter contains information regarding that process and other important facts about Hopkins."

See the above post. You should be able to access the secondary from the JHU site regardless of whether or not you received an invite.

has anyone received an email notifying them that their application is complete?

Yes. I did, this last week. Submitted 7/10, supplemental materials completed on 7/20

I applied MD-PhD, if that matters.

i'll say it again incase some people didnt see this.

JHU does not do anything in order. you can submit on the 1st day in the 1st minute and someone who submits 1 month later can receive the complete email first.

1. Just start the secondary even if you haven't received an email about it yet (go to their website to find the link).
2. submit everything when you're ready
3. wait for the magical day when you get the complete email. no point in worrying or calling. if you call, you will most likely be yelled at (the people on the phone there are INSANELY rude, a fact well documented from previous years/posts. the people taking the phone calls are underpaid employees from Baltimore who hate their job if you catch my drift)
4. it you are eventually accepted and matriculate, tell the admissions people to get up to date. this is 2010, not 1996

I received the following email:

Dear UnlikelyDoc,

Thank you for submitting your on-line application to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

We look forward to reviewing your application!

Johns Hopkins University
School of Medicine
Office of Admission
733 N. Broadway
Suite G49
Baltimore, MD 21205

May I take this to mean I am complete or should I be expecting a further email?

how is everyone handling the no-tab-or-hard-return rule? I really want to break my essays into paragraphs!

Feels like a big run-on. Doesn't look right, doesn't feel right.
