I sent a pre-interview letter and got an invite a few weeks later.

Via email or the status site?

I got my invite 10:37 AM email. Sorry for not making that clear. I did not check the status site frequently so I cannot tell you if the status site changes prior to the email being sent. I did not send any update letters. I hope this helps you.

did you guys all receive your invites this morning or has it been throughout the day?

I got an interview invite today. I think I'm going to withdrawal because I got accepted to my top school and I don't want to waste anyone's time.

Good luck everyone!

to those who sent updates, where did you send them? And addressed to who?

Just canceled my interview for 11/15 due to another acceptance. Probably available in the morning for whomever wants to call and move their date up.

Finally scheduled my interview! 🙂

I scheduled it on 12/01 since I have an interview at Albert Einstein on 12/02. No point in making two separate trips to New York.

Does anyone know whether they have a student hosting option?

Well... Ive been complete since 8/3 and nothing. No love from NYMC. Does anyone know about the Touro merger, if it is happening, and what implications it has for the MD program?

No one truly knows what the implications are. There's lots of threads about it...the administration at NYMC has assured the students that not much will change, and that it is only an asset to the school.

Others are skeptical because Touro as an administration (based on friends at the school and from almost every student review on SDN) has proven itself to be inept in almost every facet of education, and they seem to strive for the lowest standards possible that are required for accreditation. Not just in medicine, but their PA and Law programs are poor as well.

Yeah, this is the worrisome part of it. Back when mergers/buy-outs were first being discussed, and Fordham was in the running, I was really hoping they'd be taken under Fordham's wing - a good reputable school in this region with some national standing. Then Touro swooped when when Fordham backed out. :xf: that nothing bad happens, but who knows one way or the other at this point.

So is there any possibility of NYMC becoming a strictly DO school or I guess losing accreditation is a concern among applicants. Thanks for the insight.

No, that isn't a possibility. It will still be an MD school and Touro NY will be a DO school. The question is whether the quality of NYMC as an MD school will decrease as a result of Touro, which has a history of mismanagment, very poor schools and unhappy students. I anticipate that people going in the next few years probably won't be affected much, but that down the line in 5-10+ years, things could go downhill.

No, no, no. NYMC will not become an osteopathic medical school. Touro already owns/runs several. Touro's goal was to acquire a MD school into their system, they have no desire to change the accreditation to a different degree. I doubt the AOA would want another osteopathic institution in the metropolitan area as well, as there are already NYCOM and Touro-harlem (the former which is well established and reputable within the tri-state community, the latter.. sounds like a mess to be completely honest). IMHO, the only concern for the future with Touro running NYMC is the amount of funding that will go back towards students, investing in infrastructure, student experience, and rotations. As with any school, its my opinion that the quality of clerkships and support for electives are what separates schools and will define your experience, and that is where there may be reasonable questions in the future about Touro. I don't think you will see any major changes or noticeable differences in the next 2-3 years, and even after that, the first two years of education shouldn't be affected much, but down the road for future applicants, what might the situation be in 5 or 6 years? So its of my opinion that the merger won't have a significant impact on current students or even this year's and next year's applicants, but who knows down the road. That is at least the impression I've gathered from reading about whats going on, what's in the news, and from what people I know there have said.

It would really make no sense for NYMC to become a DO school. I understand that it is worrisome to have Touro, which doesn't have a good reputation, purchasing NYMC. it is important to realize though, that the relationship NYMC intends to have with Touro is very similar to its relationship with the Archdiocese of Westchester, except unlike the Archdiocese, Touro is infusing money into the school. It is entirely possible things don't work out, but based upon what we as students have been led to believe, no major changes will be occurring in the near future, including faculty or administrative changes. Losing accreditation or NYMC becoming a DO school are unfounded fears that I definitely wouldn't worry about (especially because the second one makes no sense).

Exactly. There's two things at work there: NYMC/Touro don't want the business endeavor to fail, and if it did lose accreditation somehow (hypothetical, this wouldn't happen) the AOA isn't going to want to absorb a failed school, and there's no benefit to adding another DO school to the area.

Also keep in mind there are schools that have successfully had an MD and DO program side by side. MSU anyone??? lol. So I mean I could see a DO and MD school working together within a single unified organization with two separate programs, one MD and one DO happening. its happened before at MSU and who is to say it couldn't work with NYMC and Tuoro.

Well, if you can call having the AMA and professional organizations in Michigan attempting many a time to prevent the MSU-DO from being founded and then shut down after it was made, working together, than sure. It was only after the state legislation stepped in did the situation become its current state. But that's because it was the state government's idea anyway to found the osteopathic school there.

But I do agree that there shouldn't be any issues because of Touro-Harlem. If anything, they will probably benefit more out of the two with increased rotation sites, if they open up NYMC's existing locations to Touro-Harlem.

True good points. 🙂

I was just teasing. Its actually an interesting history how those two schools were founded simultaneously from two different organizations, who at the time were at odds with each other. And now they're both great schools serving Michigan well.

+1 Touro wants NYMC because it's an MD school.

Were they originally in talks with Hofstra, or did I make that up?

Maybe. I know for sure they were in talks with Fordham before the economic collapse in '08. Which would make sense, if NYMC is currently affiliated with the Archdiocese and Fordham is a well known Jesuit school. That affiliation made the most sense to me, and as an outsider, whether an applicant or not, was hoping it would go through, because at least their undergraduate schools Fordham is ranked surprisingly well, and in the NYC area their law school is respected, so if I were a university president, it would make sense to me if I was trying to continue the upward progression of the school's reputation I would try to add a medical school. But the economy hurt a lot of business ventures, even for those who are secure in their finances.

So I guess we might be hearing about post-interview decisions tomorrow, eh?

I interviewed on 9/22 and I just checked my status and it doesnt say a letter was mailed yet.

I think earliest date was 11/16 from what the MSAR said, so maybe letters will be mailed then, and we'll here towards the end of the week

hmm..thats odd. I just checked my status page and, at the very bottom in big bold, underlined letters, it says "DECISION LETTER SENT''. I inteviewed at the end of October and didn't realize that decisions were scheduled to come out until I checked this page. ACK! Another instance of how checking SDN all the time can increase anxiety levels.

the "decision letter sent" has been there for a while i think. i think once they send it, it will say a date. not sure though

RomanCandle is right - when they actually send it, there will be a date....

So do they only mail decisions, or is it like other schools where if you are accepted you get an email too?

Where is everyone getting that acceptances are coming out this upcoming week? Every source i see says they start telling acceptances 12/15. Not to mention...

I heard during my interview at some point from the director of admissions that we would hear back starting in december (interview was very early october).

I hope we hear something soon though haha 👍

If you're accepted, it's an email followed by an acceptance packet.
Excellent - thanks for clarifying

Well my interview we were told mid- to end- of November. And the MSAR says earliest notification date is Nov 15th.

Any acceptance info guys? Judging by the thread from last year, they started to hear back on the 22nd of Nov

I have an interview Wednesday of next week.

What is the best way to get from Boston to NYMC? I plan to take the bus and not sure what I need to do once I get off the bus.

Where's the bus dropping you off? If it's from Manhattan, make your way to Grand Central Station and take the Harlem Line metro train to White Plains (not North White Plains). Then take a cab.
