Sorry to hear that. Do realize though that your application is passed along for the regular MD admissions process and I know of many candidates last year who still received MD-only interviews following that rejection. There are actually a handful of 1st year students (maybe 1 or 2) who turned down other MSTP offers to come to Stanford MD-only.

During your 1st, 2nd, 3rd (and even 4th) year you have the option of applying internally for the MD/PhD program (which is somewhat? competitive, but do-able....meaning it's more likely to happen on the second try than the first). Also, students can apply for a PhD program (with no MSTP grant or funding for your med schools years) and they are almost universally accepted into any of the wonderful PhD grad programs on campus.

out of curiosity would the fact that my application was only turned over now mean that I am "late" since my file is only under MD review now?

also if I were to apply to a PhD program without MSTP funding, would I still be able to complete both degrees in ~7 years?

I really like Stanford's programs, so hopefully I get in MD and can pursue these options.

Just to let everyone know...YES. Your applications are being reviewed. The whole switch to the new interview format has slowed things down a bit...trying to arrange the schedule of the interview day, take student input, work out logistics, go through some practice runs.

I know all the interview days for the year, a good chunk of you (over 100) will receive interviews before the Christmas break. But, most people will interview in January and February. Be patient. And good luck!

It's good to know that it's too early to assume rejection!

I really love Stanford. They're probably the only school that I would say yes to right away if I'm lucky enough to be accepted. Sadly, my whopping one semester of research experience makes me a long shot 🙁

Good advice, good advice 🙂

Anyone have the essay lengths (# characters) for the MSTP secondary questions?

Thanks! 😍

Don't be too sidelined by the rest of the university's research prowess in the basic sciences and engineering. There are plenty of students who have come in with little or no research experience (or, somewhat more often, little or no intention to continue basic science stuff). One of the more popular scholarly concentrations at Stanford is actually Community Health.

I think Stanford does get an unfair rap for being completely research focused. While I won't deny there are a lot of people here like that, you're pretty much encouraged to do whatever interests you most. And, the admissions office definitely wants a class of many interests. So keep your head up and gaze forward.

6 interview dates for the year=no in the area email-age= interview here would be amazing but make me completely broke :scared:

Any other east coasters worried about doing the back-and-forth to Cali thing?

Yes (well mid-west) but those in Cali have to do it all of the time to get to the east coast.

Hi mdeast,

Thank you for all your helpful contributions to this thread. I am considering applying to Stanford during the next cycle. I'm interested in completing an MD/PhD in Medical Anthropology. You've mentioned several times that Stanford is supportive of non-basic science research. Do you know anyone who has pursued this particular combination (MD + PhD in Med anthro)? I will be contacting the school directly later in the year as I get my app together but I figured I would get some input from a current student. 🙂

Thanks.

Yep, totally true KelMD. Just saying Stanford's new system makes it a bit tougher and less flexible in terms of getting it done. There may well be schools that have very few dates out here, too, but most of my east coast invites have seemed pretty flexible 🙂

My advice: make flight plans eeearly.

Even harder for those of us from the Pacific Northwest, although those folks from Alaska would probably consider everyone else just whiners!

MD East: does the fact that I was rejected MSTP and therefore "late" to be considered for MD hurt my MD chances?

Non-rolling admissions = your friend.

Stanford is actually a rolling admissions school (at least in the past). You get a decision typically within 2 weeks of your interview. There is no waiting until March for the "class to be selected". Although, with the format change I'm not sure how it's gonna work this year.

Interviewing late isn't a big deal though. Most of my class interviewed later in the cycle (past December), at least from the anecdotal conversations I've had about it with other people. They typically aim for a certain number of accepted students before resorting to the waitlist...so certainly, yes...there are less acceptance spots available later in the cycle, and maybe a slight tendency to waitlist a tad more. Having said that, if you're a good candidate I think your chances are relatively equal regardless of the date you end up interviewing.

Does anyone know if Stanford has a bias towards accepting in state applicants? Along those lines, what is the ratio of accepted students (IIS:OOS)?

Per MSAR

2009-10

in-state 2293 apps, 157 interviews, 36 matriculated
oos 3231 apps, 273 interviews, 44 matriculated

So with those stats it looks like 6.8% of IS applicants receive interviews, while 8.4% of oos applicants receive an interview.

Because MSAR does not show the number accepted out of those two groups, you cannot tell the rate of acceptance.

The rate of matriculation is higher for the IS (22.9%) vs, the oos (16.1%), but this could be a result of many factors and not representative of Stanford's selection process. I suspect that many highly qualified oos candidates interviewed at, and offered acceptance to Stanford choose not to "go west", while the California applicants are more likely to want to stay close to home.

That's my take on it.

There is no in-state bias for Stanford. The admissions figures are roughly the same for IS vs. OOS. Here's the stuff from 2 years ago.

IS: 2265 applied, 157 interviewed, 71 were accepted, 36 enrolled
7% interview, 45% interviewees accepted

OOS: 3555 applied, 293 interviewed, 135 were accepted, 50 enrolled
8% interview, 46% interviewees accepted

I like the odds on if you have an interview there is a 45% chance you will get in. Now getting the interview is a totally different story.

interview invite today!! i didn't know the chances were that good after receiving an interview, so i'm really thankful and excited! good luck everyone!

hey icecream. what are your stats if you don't mind me asking? i'm really nervous and want an interview here so bad! :xf:

For the "describe a significant research experience" for MSTP, is it better to describe clinical research or bench research?

3.99, 40...just got an old school pre-interview rejection letter in the mail. Ehh, don't care.

Rejected as well, it was in California and I'm an East Coast dude so it was a stretch. Good luck to the rest of ya'll :luck:

im sorry about those rejections. Is anything reflected online? good luck with the rest of your apps

For those of you who received interviews, when were you all complete? I submitted 8-19 and wanted to know if they had already reviewed mine...

Complete 8/8, but I deleted the bookmark of my status page in a fit of rage! haha. So I don't know if it changed on there.

Sorry to hear that my fellow Berkeley ite. Good thing we live in a place where Stanford is a 4-letter word

Thanks! I definitely want to do research, and on that question in the secondary I discussed my interest in environmental/occupational health, since Stanford seems to have a scholarly concentration that allows you to creat your own. Although Stanford doesn't have a public health school, the Environmental Engineering department does a lot of research in that area and they work closely with people at the medical school. I met with several faculty at the school of engineering when I visited Stanford and really blown away by all the cool research opportunities in Stanford as a whole (I was previously admitted to a different graduate program there but was unable to matriculate due to funding issues). This opportunity for interdisciplinary research is part of what drew me to Stanford. My issue is that I will have a tough time convincing adcoms of the above considering my resume + less-than-stellar secondary essays that I had to churn out entirelly too quickly before moving states.

Anyone have any ideas if post-christmas interview invites have gone out yet? Or are the majority of interview dates still open?

Sadness for all of y'all who got rejected 🙁 Boo! PS the secondary application sites says that all decisions are made via mail, and won't be posted online. Makes me wonder if there is a sad surprise waiting in the mail for me soon.

Hey, for you guys who are still waiting for interviews, I was marked complete 8/6 and received interview invite 10/8. Heading over to west coast in december woot!

Rejections are never fun, but keep in mind that Stanford has a historically low interview rate (400-450 students, about 6-7%). You can't win 'em all.

Your stats aren't much different from mine but it seems like ur verbal score might be a bit low for stanford. not sure but good luck anyways!

Complete 9/20/10 3.86/3.88 34P. Opinions on chance of recieving an interview invite?

I just got a rejection letter only a week or so after submitting secondary. Sucks, this school right by my house too...lame!

Whatever, good luck to the rest of you!

As for the interviews that have gone out. I think the number is around 100. Latest update was that there will be 20-30 students interviewing/day (smaller than originally imagined). Should still be about 300-350 interviews to be given out. So still incredibly early in the game.

Does Stanford interview everyone not rejected? as in...are they sending out a ton of rejections?

lol - hoping that if I don't get a rejection for a while, I'll be interviewed one way or another...

Ahhh, just got an interview invite this morning! Unbelievably excited.

However, when I tried to log in (with Chrome and Firefox) and register for a specific date, it looked like there were none available. T_T Did anyone else have trouble with this?

Thanksss in advance and good luck to everyone!

Hey so since there is no mail on Sunday, all of you with invites got them via email, right?
But on the website Stanford says it does not give out final decisions online, so I am slightly confused.
