Sucks. But congrats on the acceptance--some people don't even have that.
Yeah, that's what I keep telling myself. I know it's great to be accepted. But you just can't beat Stanford, IMO.

did anyone from 2/18 hear back yet? good luck all![]()
Did any fellow waitlisted people receive financial aid info from Stanford?
I think/ hope we're on the 18th,
but that's only based on the silence I've had on my end so far
its been way too long since someone was accepted here. it seems most people are being sent to the waitlist pile?
Does anyone know the ethical implications of dropping another school after May 15 if you are accepted off of a waitlist?
I have an MD/PhD offer in Chicago. And I intend on them being the only school I have after May 15th. But is it generally accepted to leave another school for one when you're accepted off a wait list?
Ipod,
How do you know this information? Did you call in or find out otherwise?
Thanks!
Hi phosphokinase,
How do you know this?
Were all three people called and reached?
Or will they wait on a few more until tomorrow?
Thanks and good luck to all!!
Anyone here get in?
the committee had their last meeting today and the last 3 acceptance calls happened this afternoon.
Are we 100% sure there are no more acceptances to be sent out? I thought they said that there would likely be more after admit weekend (this weekend)?
I'm gonna go ahead and say yes. If that's what they told them at admit week, then I highly doubt they lied.
Mastermix,
I agree--can it really be that only three of two large groups were accepted? Did ANYONE from 3/12 get in?
Can phosphokinase or MDEast comment perhaps? Are admissions decisions 100% over and done?
Dr Garcia said at the diversity dinner on Thursday night that the committee had just had their last meeting before the dinner and that he called the last 3 people. He didn't say if he was able to reach all 3 though.
Also, this year more people attended admit weekend than in previous years (they said ~30% more). I don't know if that is any indication of how many people will actually decide to matriculate at Stanford, and/or what the waitlist movement will be like. Anyways, I can't say I'm 100% sure that there won't be any more acceptances, things could change, but I'm just sharing what was said a the dinner. You might want to call to confirm![]()
phosphokinase, How many people went to admit weekend this time? Were people pretty sure that they were going to go? what were the preview days like?
There is a post by doctorno from 5/01/10 in last year's Stanford thread in which he compiles the number of people who went to admit weekend over the years (it's rather long, so I won't quote the entire thing). Here was the breakdown (no, 2010):
2009: 55 people (http://deansnewsletter.stanford.edu/archive/05_11_09.html#4)
2008: 70 people (http://deansnewsletter.stanford.edu/archive/05_05_08.html#3)
2007: 90 people (http://deansnewsletter.stanford.edu/archive/05_07_07.html#d)
2006: 60 people (http://deansnewsletter.stanford.edu/archive/05_01_06.html#7)
2005: 77 people (http://deansnewsletter.stanford.edu/archive/05_02_05.html)
So the last time there were 90 people at admit weekend was 2007, and that was the year Stanford didn't use its waitlist. Based on what I read in a thread from that year, they had something called First Alternates, who either had first dibs on open spots in the class after May 15 OR were guaranteed a spot in the following year's class. I haven't heard of any such thing happening this year, as far as I know, but it will be interesting to see if anyone ends up getting one of these this coming week. FYI, 2010 had 72 people at admit weekend (http://deansnewsletter.stanford.edu/archive/04_19_10.html#3). But based on 2007, this situation doesn't look at all promising for people on the waitlist (I hope I will be proven wrong on this).
Based on a thread from 2007 (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=375976), it seems as though applicants were notified of first alternate status at the time of their decision (acceptance, wait list, or rejection).
So maybe we can assume that they are not using that system this year?
90 people attending admit weekend is definitely not a good sign for those on the wait list, but it's impossible to predict exactly what will happen. Need to stay positive. I'm not that surprised that so many people attended admit weekend though given that Stanford is now ranked fifth according to USNWR.
I'm pretty sure Stanford doesn't use that system anymore. I came in off the waitlist last year and there was no mention of "first alternate" status in my waitlist letter.
If they haven't been doing First Alternates all year (which it seems like they have not), there's no reason to suspect they would suddenly start doing it for the last two interview groups. I regret mentioning it in the first place. Depending on how many of them got in that year, it may just mean 15-20 people might get in from the waitlist this year, which would still be better than nothing.
They were also half-jokingly talking about expanding the class size because there were so many students that attended (although I'm not sure if they would implement such a change this entering class). So even if there is a high yield of admitted students, there might be more room opening up for the waitlist.
Well, there do seem to be chances that they might, just might, increase class size in the upcoming year or two-- we just have to see.
I am still unsure as to whether this really was the last committee meeting as it does seem a bit low to take 3 students from two full groups of students. But....perhaps when they saw the list of students coming to admit weekend, they pulled back a bit.
Also, in terms of wait list movement, considering no alternate list, etc process, there will still likely be some waitlist movement....so that is good....
Anyone from 3/12 get a letter or call yet??
Well, ipod01 writes a few posts above that the office said 3-12 will hear between the 7th and 14th, so I think they have been reviewed. Most likely the committee went into the meeting knowing 90 people were registered to attend admit weekend and proceeded conservatively. The mystery now is whether the later people will be looked at first for waitlist spots (probably not).Or that they actually haven't had the meeting for 3/12 yet. Remember-- 3/12 was a last "add on" date, so perhaps it is in a different category. They also mentioned that they likely might not get to review the 3/12 folks until after admit weekend. If they had only discussed 2/18 prior to last week (and 2/23 seems to have been a big date), then it is unlikely that only 3 could be accepted from both those last two dates....That's my guess...
Actually, LSJ011, I believe it is 86 students INCLUDING MSTP students that are in the entering class. Unless they make this year a year to expand as has been previously suggested on this post. I'm pretty sure that is correct-- perhaps MDeast or someone else could second that?
