Because if you matched to A&M than any school that offered you a pre-match used the match on Feb 1st to fill that spot. They don't just keep a spot for you even when you match elsewhere.

I just read about it what's going on. Didn't know they "overbooked" their class by 80 or so. I'd actually love to be in their position. $2k, a year off, and automatic enrollment in my 1st choice school? That sounds pretty sweet to me. That actually sounds too good to be true. Oh, how I wish A&M had accepted me!

ummm...ok...not sure if joking.

Ah, your post in the A&M thread makes sense now.

They are not offering your first choice school, they are offering your first choice campus...as in Temple or Bryan - the two TAMHSC campuses.

Ah, there's the kicker. I'd still rather move to Temple than El Paso... that would actually be even MORE convenient than San Antonio. Man, I just keep getting more and more outrageously jealous as each detail unfurls

😀

Are you serious??? Wtf du get out of college station or temple that you can't get elsewhere. A&m thinks so highly of themselves. El Paso is a great city. Why can't you be happy to be in a medical school rather than talking about how your better than other people?

Are you serious? Why don't you go to the A&M thread and get his whole story straight rather than talking about how YOU'RE better than other people?

First off I know that the people going to A&M are very smart. I am not knocking on those people. I understand what's going on and I am sorry for everyone stuck in that. One of my best friends is stuck in that. I never said that I felt I was better than anyone anyone else. Were all going to be doctors so I just don't feel like people should put up a superiority complex based on their school. I'm sorry if I offended anyone stuck in the A&m situation.

Temple better than El Paso? Ever seen those mountains at sunset?

I'm probably a bit biased but I think El Paso really does have a lot to offer; some of the best hiking in Texas, a crazy busy level 1 trauma center, and really cheap housing.

Hi

Does anyone know anything about the alternate list at El Paso? Does it move, how many on it, etc? Has anyone spoken to the admission office about it? Thanks.

I gave in and contacted them. They said they can't really tell me much now since it is so close to match, but I can contact them in the future and they should be able to tell me.

Thumbs up to the awesome Level 1 Trauma center. That's the only thing I wanted. GSWs please, kthanxbai!

cburn, for me, location was the most important factor. I'd kill to be near my family for the next four years, and a 1 hour drive home from A&M is better than a 13 hour drive from El Paso. I know this isn't the case for a lot of people, but I do have my reasons, which are, quite simply, just as legit as yours. Me wishing I had gotten into A&M (which is actually kind of a half-joke) has nothing to do with the reputation of the school lol... and I mean, literally, nothing. I'm not from Texas originally, so I have absolutely no idea which schools think they're better than others and all that blah blah blah... Hell, until I began applying to schools, I didn't even know where Houston was. I just think A&M is offering a pretty sweet deal to people who actually have a valid reason for deferring for a year, and I'd probably jump at the opportunity. That is all.

ToAnotherPlace: I totally understand and I don't fault you at all. I was angry because I felt like you were insulting the west Texas area. I guess I misread what you said and I'm sorry. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be close to family. I hope you understand that I felt like some people were being talked down to or disrespected for not being in central Texas bc not everyone wants to be there either. Again I'm not attacking you personally just explaining some of my words. Wish you the best of luck.

You're not alone with the proximity thing, my family is all in Austin. Also, my 1st child is due July 25th so we can commiserate about the lack of sleep we're getting. It'll work out though, life always does.

You people and your babies. Always gotta show the rest of us up, don't you?! No I'm jk but I wanted to say congrats to you both! Hitting up all life's got to offer 🙂

Hi Everyone,
I am a second year medical student at TT's Foster SOM. The students here in El Paso have compiled a document of apartment reviews, statistics on housing for the current classes, realtors and good tidbits to know in your housing search. If you would like this document, send me an e-mail ([email protected]). I will post this on the Facebook page if I can ever find it...I saw the page last week but was still working on the document so did not post. Unfortunately, I can not find it now. Enjoy the time you have left in whatever you are doing and see you all soon! -Travis

Does anyone know if there's a second look or something before orientation starts?

Just curious, how many received the Alternate list e-mail?

I think I counted 6 on SDN, and I know of one person not on SDN that mentioned they were waitlisted as well. Not sure how many they sent it to though.

Not sure, let us know though if you find anything out. I was planning on my girlfriend and I just flying out there in early May to look for a place. Hoping they won't mind her and I just dropping in at the school for a look, she hasn't seen the place yet and is interested in looking around.

I saw on the Facebook PLFSOM Class of 2014 group that they had spring training (which I think is a second look type thing) in May last year. It'll probably mention something about it in the packet we're supposed to get this week from the student affairs office.

I got the email... 🙂

I decided to call the school today and ask about what deficiencies were in my application and how I could fix it... They told me that I didn’t have many bad things in my app, just my undergrad GPA, but my grad GPA gave me some extra points in that area... And my MCAT score, which I expected to hear of course. I asked her if I could send in some extra letters of rec and she said that I didn’t need any because I got full points for that too.

So then I asked her if I had to reapply again (which I am not doing of course) what I could do about my undergraduate GPA, and she said I couldn’t do anything. She said that I shouldn’t go back and retake classes because that would be weird since I have a good grad GPA. Anyways, glad I don’t have to reapply because it seems like there is little I can do to strengthen the weaknesses in my app at this point. Too frustrating for words though…

I got one too. If I had to guess, I'd say about 20 people recieved the email. But, again, that's just a guess.

I was also placed on the alternate list.

I have heard that waitlists are more like 50 people... Which worries me a lot!

El Paso has been pretty helpful with feedback. I called and talked to the "advisor" in the admissions office. She pulled up my file and went through it briefly and told me what I need to improve on (told me the same thing my pre-med advisor told me: do more extracurricular activities).

I was sent an email saying I was on the waitlist earlier last week, so I asked her if writing a Letter of Intent would be of any help. She said that they already have their waitlist ranked, making a LOI unnecessary.

So if you're looking for some quick feedback, definitely call Foster SOM's admissions office, they're very willing to help.

For those who like stats: she said they had 2700 applicants this year of which <600 were interviewed (~22%)

so a 1 in 6 chance of getting in after interview?

So you just called up the office of admissions, said you were on the waitlist, and asked if they could tell you where you can improve? I was wanting to call, but thought they might be busy so close to match and what not. I guess I'll call tomorrow, if they're not closed with the freezing weather.

Edit:Nevermind, saw your post in the RoT thread.

For those of you that think that El Paso is a crappy city, think again.

I'm from Utah and took my wife back there last week just to get a final feel before I made up my decision. I have other acceptances, but I'm going to El Paso for sure. I just feel good there.

The west side of town is amazing. Clean streets, perfect roads, palm trees, great housing, EVERY thing you'll need (from Discount Tires to Home Depot), etc.

Whats wrong with living in one of the nation's safest cities? Who cares if its on the boarder? Everyday you drive by you should feel blessed for being born on this side...

I'd have to agree that usually, waitlists are probably much larger. I'd guess that the lists for the UT schools are around 100 students long. I just hope that there's still room for some of us waitlisters as we get closer to June 15th.

Has anyone received anything in the mail yet?

I got a packet Monday about the Criminal Background Check as well as the info to put a 100.00 deposit (due by May something I think) to secure a spot.

Ok, have they given out any/all the scholarships since match? I'm just curious if I should keep crossing the fingers or not.

I wouldn't say they gave out all the scholarships. If anything, I think they'll start sending them out again during March and April when the whole Texas waitlist starts to move a lot.

You can also email John Snelling. He was very quick and helpful with responding when I emailed a few weeks ago.

When you emailed John Snelling, did he inform you of the likelihood of you receiving a scholarship? or what place in line you were? or did he just inform you when they would be sending out the notifications?

Also, do you think the proposed budget cuts of $13 million from the state of Texas will cut into the scholarship fund?

Did anyone get a "you're in the alternate list" e-mail and then a letter in the mail saying something about "unfortunately, we cannot offer you a position for the entering class of 2011?" Two of my friends were interviewed late January. They both received an e-mail and a letter. They have tried contacting admissions but haven't gotten a hold of them. I was wondering if anyone else has ran into this problem?

When did they recieve the letter? I received the e-mail, but no letter. Hopefully one doesn't come:xf:. I was interviewed in October.

Um, about a couple weeks ago. My friend said he got the e-mail and then the letter came later.

I also got the email but never received the letter... I hope we are in the clear on that one!

Well, I got the waitlist email and then my mother recieved a snail mail from Texas Tech in Lubbock that said they couldn't offer me a place blah blah blah. She was all "You're still on the waitlist, right??". I then had to explain to her that they were two totally different schools. Maybe your friends and my mom have something in common....🤣

Same thing happened to me. Got a packet from TT El Paso the same day I got rejected from TT Lubbock (and I didn't recognize it was from Lubbock). I was like, WTF?!?!? Especially since I just went back and visited the school/admissions committee two days before! I thought it was funny.

Did the Lubbock "rejection" arrive by snail mail or email?

snail mail. My mother also freaked me out when she called me in a panic and said I was rejected (from Lubbock). I had to explain it to her...

Got the "big" packet yesterday with all the info..

Looks like a mandatory two-day orientation begins on Thursday July 7. Earlier than I thought.

The White Coat ceremony is on Saturday, July 9, 2011 and classes start the following Monday.
