anyone else get the accepted email? was it from certiphi or carver admissions directly? do you think everyone who was accepted got one?
:scared:

It seems like they were directly from Carver admissions. I think it's strange that they said they would not notify us of decisions via phone or email and then the next day they sent out email acceptances to some people.

I had always heard from people that you would get an accepted email from Carver the day before your accepted letter comes, so this makes sense.

My guess is the rest of us have either waitlist or reject letters on the way :-/

Was just reviewing last year's thread and comparing the dates.

For 2010:

My rejection letter was dated 9 Mar (on the letter itself)
Postmarked 11 Mar
Acceptance Emails went out 12 Mar, late in the day (according to the thread)
Rejection letter in my mailbox 12 Mar (snail mail)

This year:

Acceptance emails went out just after lunch 9 Mar
There is a good chance the letters went in the mail yesterday.... and my regret is already on it's way!! haha (laughing to keep from going crazy):bang:

This whole process just sucks. I wish I knew what they are looking for because if I don't get in this cycle, I don't think they would ever accept me.

you never know Bam74, a lot of people end up getting in off of the waitlist so don't give up yet

Today is the day project reapplication becomes official........................ Oh Iowa how I heart thee. But alas thou doth not haveforth the same love towards me. Blah.

Not necessarily! Being an undergrad at Iowa I've been to many presentations by the deans of admissions over the years (they often come into pre-med club meetings and talk). One thing they always emphasize is that if you don't get accepted on your first shot, you should try and meet with them so they can tell you what you need to work on the 2nd time around. And they really like re-applicants because if you take the time to work on yourself and improve (higher GPA/MCAT, more volunteering/shadowing) they say that you are a lot more likely to get in the second time around because it shows perseverance.

I know it sucks a lot. I like to do this thing where I pretend I don't care if I don't get in because I'll just reapply until they accept me and make it work, but I obviously care quite a bit. If I don't get in I'm going to give myself like 2 days tops to be sad about it and then work on my alternate plan - which is currently applying to MS programs to strengthen my application.

Don't give up!! 🙂

There isn't much more I can do to strengthen my application. By most standards my application, on paper, was very strong. I think that means they don't like me as a person and it's hard to work against that. It is beyond my comprehension that someone with the record that I have, as well as being an instate applicant attending the U. of Iowa for undergrad, can't get accepted.

I would be really surprised if you don't get into one of the 3 schools you've been wait-listed at... one other thing you have to remember is that you don't get to choose your interviewer... and might have been dealt a bad hand with the 3 you had... in any event, your numbers are still strong and I believe you still have a good shot at during Carver's wait-list...numbers are not everything, but they are still worth something.

And, if on the stroke of a really bad luck, you don't get in this time... apply again... get some more real life experience, enjoy life and apply again.. you are still too young (yes, at my age... I can say that, lol) to be devastated about and admission to medical school being delayed 1yr.

I interviewed at Carver too... but I'm OOS and our wait-lists moves a lot slowly, so I'm expecting a rejection anyways...but I really liked the school prior/during my interview.

Good luck, I have no doubt that you will someday become a doctor...but first and foremost you have to become a great doctor. I believe it's the greatest privilege one can have (my opinion)...

I feel like it's almost random who they decide to let in. Like after the interview they flip a coin or something to decide. I think there are a lot of variables - like who interviews you, who's on the admissions committee, etc. But if you try again some of these variables will change so I don't think it hurts to give it another shot. I do not have stellar credentials but I was banking on having extensive real-world experiences in different areas of medicine, as well as my passion, to get me in. Being in state helps too. We'll see if that's enough, but if someone with credentials such as yours wasn't able to get in, I don't know if I even have a shot 🙂

It's easy to get dejected with the whole process... I often find myself thinking along the lines of who are they to tell me I don't have what it takes to be a doctor.. you know? They don't know me. They know the paper version of me, but I think there is so much more to it that doesn't even get considered, and it's really sad, because I know on the inside I can and will be a great doctor. I guess my application just didn't show them that well enough - so I'll try again.

Anyways I think I'm getting way ahead of myself because there is still hope.. Iowa accepts many people off of the waitlist each year so my plan is to try and not think about it until I get my letter in the mail and then figure out what I need to do 😀

Rejection letter received via snail mail today. 🙁

I got a rejection too. Looks like I start to work harder on my public health school essay! =)

Officially rejected from the Carver College of Medicine... and every school I applied to.

Sorry to all those who have been rejected 🙁

Definitely makes me not want to check my mail, as it seems like I will inevitably find a rejection or a waitlist.

Am I correct in stating that the only ones to receive acceptance snail mail letters were the ones that received acceptance emails?

Chin Up. Easy money says you'll become a Doc - based on you MD Apps Profile. Also, you still have hope for this cycle!!!!

The application process can be a bit of a crap shoot.

This is my first application cycle. I am an OOS applicant that got accepted to UI - Carver in Dec. with a Dean's Scholarship. My state school waitlisted my rear even though my numbers greatly exceed their last entering class. What makes it worse is that said school is a very non-competitive and a bottom-tier school. I have gotten accepted and rejected to other places but this one hurt the most. It is hard not to take it as a slap in the face.

My only advice is to not get cynical and bitter towards Carver or the process in general. The results say very little about you as a person and your potential to excel in medicine. Go visit the wrestling team and get a motivational talk from Dan Gable / Tom Brand.

I am pretty sure that I will attending Iowa this Fall. Hopefully, you will be a M1 somewhere. If not, shoot me a PM if you need any assistance in the future. I honestly don't think that you'll need any.

Best of Luck!!!!

Waitlisted. #16, IS.

I'm really sorry to all those who got rejected. You will find another school or a new direction. There is a lot of life left ahead of us and anything can happen. Have faith and pride in yourselves. I'm grateful to be struggling and crying among such incredible people.

Thank you. I honestly was OK with everything when I read my letter - I was expecting to be rejected. It wasn't until I started having to tell people and having to hear their pity/condolences/whatever that it really hit me 🙁

Wait listed as well. #3, IS.

Im also sorry to everyone who received rejection letters today. This is my second cycle of applying to med school so I know how you are feeling because that was how I felt last year. Just remember to keep your heads up and always believe in yourself. Everything happens for a reason and if medicine is where you are meant to be, it will all work out in the end.

I am #32 on the in-state waitlist so I don't expect to make it. Anybody know how deep the list goes?

Sorry to everybody that got rejections. This whole mess of applying to medical school is enough to drive someone insane, especially considering Carver's approach.

I live in Iowa and got no mail. Seriously, what is going on? I need my rejection letter to obtain closure:meanie:

Just keep trying. I know how you feel. I applied three years ago and was not accepted at Iowa even though my scores were higher than average. There are always ways to improve your application. It might not be tangible things that you need to work on. Who knows what they were looking for. Time gives you maturity and a greater appreciation for when you do get in. If things do not go your way this year, I am confident you will have better luck next time.

hey everybody, to those who are waitlisted or rejected. Thier is probably little anyone can say in this forum to make you feel any better about how the process went....but im going to try. I applied multiple times before I was accepted at carver and I know how easy it is to hate the process, hate carver, and hate life in general during this time. The process of getting into medical school gets harder every year. The **** economy has flooded admissions offices with applications from a alot of highly qualified people most who have alot of real-world experience. To qoute an admissions officer "21 isnt what it used to be" so to the first time applicants who are coming out of undergrad with stellar GPAs and rockin MCAT scores but still seem to find themselves holding an admissions decision they arent happy with. keep doing what you have been doing all along, work hard do research, volunteer more, and show schools you want it bad enough that your willing to wait for a spot if thats what it takes. Previuos posters are right, its a giant crap shoot, but if you stay in the game long enough youll get in.

Wow... thank you.

The best thing you can do is schedule a meeting with the school after getting a rejection/waitlist letter. They will be real with you and point out things that they see as flaws in your application, things you may not have considered. If I learned anything from my application last year its the each member on the ad com has a different value system, I got full marks from some members and average scores from others. The only way to combat that is to have a well rounded application, scheduling a meeting with someone at carver will help you do that.

also the wait list moved 21 spots last year for in state students, an average year is around 23-25.

yep, I did make it in this year, Iowa appreciates reapplicants.

Good to hear. I almost hope I don't get in anywhere else so I will have the chance to reapply to Iowa.

Its worth reapplying thats for sure, although I think MCW would be a sweet school to go to, I applied there as well.

Wait list is already moving. It's up two spots for in state.

In the last five years, it has supposedly moved anywhere from 17 to 30.

Does anyone know the WL movement (if any) for OOS apps? 😕

Wondering the same thing? I'm hoping the letter is there when I get home tonight, and further hoping its a waitlist and not a rejection. Do they have separately ranked lists for IS and OOS? If so, I wonder how they take from each?

Yes, there are separately ranked lists for IS and OOS. They over-accept for OOS, so the OOS list doesn't usually start moving until after May 15. Last year, the OOS list moved something like 20-ish spots, but the year before, they only accepted one person off the OOS list (according to the previous year's threads).

I'm also waiting on my letter and hoping for a waitlist! Good luck to you! :luck:

Waitlisted OOS #71. Not holding my breath, but it could happen I suppose.

It's funny... I don't actually know anyone personally on this forum but I find myself pulling for those who are still waiting for news.

For those of you that didn't get in, I know how you feel. This wasn't my first year to be rejected. Good luck to everyone!

Waitlisted, OOS, #2.

First thing resembling good news for me this season. 🙂

Thanks for the info...and great luck to you!!!👍

Wait-listed out of state. Number 44. Whats the out of state waitlist movement? I may just call in and ask to be taken off if there's not really any good chance

(OOS, Texas)....Still nothing in the mail yet....hopefully tomorrow?? Anybody else not heard anything?

Still no letter.

I'm about to pull my hair out.

For geographical reference - OOS, California. Just ambushed my mailman and got my bad news letter 🙁
