For anybody whose been through the process: the website says you can be separately considered for admission to UM or to FAU, but nowhere on my secondary do I recall them asking which campus I was applying for. When/where would I specify that, and would I have to do two separate interviews if I want to be considered at both campuses?

For anyone especially insightful about admissions: The website says they conduct interviews through the end of April. That sounds unusually late (many schools do their last interviews in February). Do they seriously do a lot of interviews in March and April, or is there a more realistic date when they're pretty much done?

They used to have a program with FAU, but they no longer have it--- they must have just not updated the website yet.

Not sure about length of their interview cycle, but I have heard on hear that the MD program is almost full? Not sure if that helps!

OK. I just found the answer to that question, and it is kinda insane what is actually going on with that. Maybe most of you already heard, but in case you are as dumb as I am, FAU just this month got acredited to have their own school, and this week they are opening up the applications process for the class entering in the fall of 2011!😱

Stop rubbing your eyes; you read the right! I don't think I'll apply because I already have one acceptance and the idea of holding out throughout the summer to consider another school is something my mind just can't process right now. But if any of you Florida residents are still waiting for your first acceptance, you need to go to this website immediately! http://med.fau.edu

Did everyone who got accepted (MD/MPH) get phone calls? I only got an email. That's fine, but it all seems a little too good to be true, and I'm sort of beginning to worry it was an email fluke. Got two emails about a week ago and nothing in the mail yet...

My letter in the mail for just the MD program took 2 weeks after my acceptance. You could call them to double check but I am pretty sure they do not make acceptance mistakes like that (or if they do it is very very rare).

Has UM done away with the distinction between "temporary alternate list" and "regular alternate list"?

Just got a reply from them, telling me that I'd hear from them (pre-interview) in the "next few days." I was done in early november. OOS.

i guess that means they sent our rejection letters in the mail?

Also wondering this. Can anybody who has received the alternate list letter comment to the language used?

"The Admissions Committee has reached a decision on your application. After carefull review and discussion they have placed you on the alternate list at the Medical Campus in Miami. A formal letter to this effect will be sent to you so look for it in the mail over the next few days."

And yes, that's the way "careful" is spelled in the email.

To everyone still waiting, the committee meets this Wed. Keep hope alive!

CLASS OF 2015!!:soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Decided to decline my regular MD spot in favor of MD/MPH. Hope this means good news for someone else 🙂

To all those waiting: don't worry!! Be patient! I interviewed in the 1st week of december, got the phone call the 1st week of January, didn't hear from them at all for weeks, then got an email saying I was accepted MD/MPH and MD-only in the 2nd week of Feb. Still haven't gotten the snail mail package but I got an email today asking me to decide between MD and MD/MPH. So for those of you still waiting: it'll be ok, they're really slow!!

For those of you deciding between MD or MD/MPH I'd love to hear your thoughts on the decision. I'm kind of leaning toward MD-only because I'm wary of new curriculums, and kind of worried about the clinical exposure to surgical specialties in the combined degree program - I'd love to spend alot of time working in the Trauma center. But the MPH is a big draw too! Help please?!

Thanks for the pick-me-up, gujuDoc! Good luck at UCF...was on their waitlist last year so I know exactly how you feel!

I chose MD/MPH without any hesitation. My reasoning was that a) its not a new curriculum and that it has actually been in use with the UM/FAU students for like 4-5 years now (I cant remember exactly) and they have found that students have actually dont better on Step 1 than the UM/MD students. Also, I like the smaller class with more PBL. When I visited, I sat in on an entire lecture and found it very distracting because so many people were talking and I think with a smaller group of fifty there would be more accountability- which I find helpful. Also, I LOVED the public health department that we would be doing our PH rotation in up in Palm beach. It was such a diverse patient population and everyone I talked to said you get more hands-on opportunities in comparison. Also, the students who had friends in the Miami program said that they get to do a lot more (like being able to assist in surgeries, etc) on their rotations then at Jackson because its a more intimate setting. Plus, I love the flexibility of being able to choose where you do rotations. Also, you basically get a free MPH- which is pretty sweet if you are confident this is something you want for your career in the future.

This is just some of the things that went into my decision- which was really easy for me to make. Good luck with making yours! PM me if you have other questions!

Haha just realized I started with a) and never continued with b.... ;-)

Guys, help me out. I'm worried beyond description. Due to uncontrollable circumstances, I was only able to submit my secondary in middle of December. I still have not heard back for an interview. Is the class full? Anyone know whey they stop interviewing people? I feel hopeless right now. UM is where I want to go!!!

Woah woah woah.. Well, it's normal that you haven't heard back yet. The adcom supposedly meets Wednesdays, so maybe you'll hear today. But IMO, you shouldn't be so worried and have your hopes up so high for a school that you don't even have an interview for yet... in March....

decided to accept the MD position over the MD/MPH. Hopefully this'll open up a spot for someone on this list!

Accepted. Interviewed 2/18. Good luck all.

Congrats to those accepted! And a big thank you to those turning over their seats who decided against them.

Looks like I'm going to be in the "twiddling my thumbs for two more weeks" category.

+pity+

Thanks so much! really hope each of you gets a call very soon!:luck:
FYI, I sent a thank you and update letter as soon as I was waitlisted 2/23.
👍

P.S. Miss gujudoc, I tried to shoot you a pm. full mailbox!

Hi guys,

I'm having a hard time deciding: UCSD vs Miami.

UCSD is close to home. Miami Miller (the school) impressed me more. UCSD is more scenic/manicured overall, probably safer too. People seem happier and friendlier at Miami (student happiness and my probable happiness is one of my most important criteria. The med students and general population seemed friendlier too, I don't know my sample size is too limited). Miami seems more diverse too which is nice. UCSD has significantly lower tuition (tuition also an important criteria). Both have P/NP curriculum though Miami has an internal rank. Both use medical societies. Both have awesome clinical experiences, though I suspect Miami might be better in this arena simply because of the demographic. Miami has Bascom-Palmer (thinking about ophtho). If anyone who currently attends Miami want to add some pluses about the school I'm all ears.

Lol I've gone through that CD with the powerpoint presentation 3 times already.

Blah theres also UCLA but I doubt I would go there.

side note: Also the presentation at Miami was awesome. The dean was very enthusiastic about the school and you guys had 7-8 med students to talk with us which was impressive. Compared to the 1-2 we get at most other schools.

You know that feeling you had when you visited....? I had it, too. UM does such a great job in every way. UCSD has the upper hand in tuition for you, but, because you are leaning towards optho, UM would be my pick. Bascolm has been first in the country 9 of the last 10 years (last 7 years straight) and if you do well, you'll make back that extra 80K in loans before long.

Actually, I don't think the $ discrepancy will be that big. Scrolled through your old posts and found your stats (sneeky...). You have a great chance at a scholarship at UM. Apply now if you haven't already. Maybe your decision will get easier. 👍

P.S. I second Guju's advice. Go to second look if you can.

Lol I do have high stats but I doubt I was ever specific or accurate on any post in SDN (always preserving anonymity). Also most of my posts are a poor attempt at trolling or trying to be funny and should generally be disregarded

Is Miami pass/fail? I can't remember what they said during the interview, but for some reason I thought they had lettered grades?

I haven't posted for a while, but I'm so utterly HAPPY. Got my acceptance call 2/23 for the MD program. UM is my first pick and a marvelous school, no doubt. I can't wait to start! Good luck to everyone still waiting for a call. 😀

UM CLASS OF 2015!!:soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Congratulations Ari! Although I haven't officially decided yet I will probably go to Miami too. Do you remember if the school is pass fail with an internal rank or High pass/Pass/Fail. I can't seem to find this information anywhere.

Just received OOS interview invite. Very excited. Surprised to find out they are still interviewing.

Has anybody heard anything from financial aid/scholarship office?

Thank you! As you know, UM is a GREAT school.. To my understanding, it's the former of the two.. "Students will receive a final grade for each course (likely pass/fail) and an extensive narrative for each course describing strengths, weaknesses, and accomplishments." but I'm not 100% certain as this info might be a bit outdated. Best of luck in making your decision. Maybe I'll see you in the fall!

I know, I couldn't believe it when I got the email!

What date did you choose?

Do either of you guys mind sharing your stats?

Thanks! Interviewing next Friday. Stats are 36 MCAT, Good gpa, and lots of medical experience and unique life experience. Hope that helps!

Anyone with any advice on the interview or the rest of the process? Also, any insight into chances oos once interviewed?

So I called the admissions office to see if they would tell me anything about my status, and they said there are a few more interview dates, so I would hear one way or the other within the next few weeks...anybody get anything more out of them regarding their status?

I received a scholarship letter today! Very pleased with it 😀

Does anyone know when UM begins to send rejections out to those who have yet to receive an interview invite? Also, are these rejections through email or the mail?

My roommate calls to tell me I got a skinny little envelope in the mail today from UM. I ask her to open it, expecting the worst. I'm an alternate for both MD and the MD/MPH!

Sometimes, though, I can't help but wonder if alternate lists are the worse of the three options (a/r/w.) Now I'm still floating around in limbo, trying to keep my spirit up with why we all put ourselves through this torturous application cycle... :smack:

ihatebookworms, i heard from office that they still interview at April. Sending update would help at this point, and that is what I did.

Great news just now. I guess sending update helped my case to get an interview.
